the chemistry they have even today shows through. they were incredible to watch on the court. i would still argue the 1980 wimbledon match was the greatest in history because of the incredible rivalry and chemistry with mcenroe/borg.
every sport needs fire and ice whether its borg/mcenroe, martina/chris, sampras/agassi, federer/nadal, magic/bird, senna/prost, lewis/vettel, its what makes it fun to watch.
@etthelconcha Nadal said. "Pete Sampras versus Goran Ivanisevic match. or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable. It's not really tennis. it is a few swings of the racquet.. For me in the past it was just serve. serve. serve"
sucks arrogant Nadal.
cgeater always. fake time-out always. fake take time always. ugly gamesmanship always. too annoying always.
Annoying. Overrated. Arrogant manner. Arrogant fan. sucks Nadal
Technology has changed every sport, and today's players are more athletic than yesterdays (with the exception of Borg). The equipment they use now is space age stuff, so of course the game is faster. The 1980 match had an ingredient that has (IMO)not been equalled or surpassed though, and that is the cast of characters. The supposed "SuperBrat" from the US against the super quiet assassin from Sweden. The respect they had (and still have) for each other made it the greatest theater of all.
Great video. I walked passed Wimbledon today for the first time having only seen matches on tv before. To walk by the place is incredible, you sense the history and think of the players who have played there. Great clips from 1980. I remember where I was that day, so I think as a 41 year old that says how much an impression it made on me as a kid. Thank you.
I don't think 2008 was the greatest final ever played...because in order for a match to be considered the best...both players have to play at the top of their game. Nadal played at the top of his game, but Federer did not. Mac and Borg were both at the top of their game that day, and that's why that final will be the best.
Aah here you are, you think you know better than Borg and McEnroe who think Rafa-Federer final was better than their final.
Federer who won 5 consecutive Wimbledons before this final and who also won Wimbledon the next year and US Open 2-3 months later and competed in a five-set final match that ended at 9-7 (final set) is not at the top of his game?
You call Borg the King of Clay and you don't agree to what Borg says. Why would Borg, McEnroe say someone else played better?
@anocri Tennis is a humble sport...Borg is known to be humble and quiet. Majority of the fans out there say 2008 was the best final, so of course Borg and Mac will say it too. You have to understand, tennis is bigger than a sport, bigger than the players. Tennis is a market. Everything is said and done for marketability reasons. In 2008, Roger Federer, on the day this Wimbledon was played, was not consistent for 5 sets. Look at the stats during the 2008 final compared to the other finals of Fed.
Thanks you sound like you are a big fan of the Borg-McEnroe era. I think Ivan Lendl challenged Mac's stature in 1983/84 including close matches at the WCT (Dallas), The Philadelphia indoor and '84 French (won by Lendl).
@tenniscollector I'm a Huge fan of the Borg-McEnroe era and it is that what got me interested in tennis. My knowledge of the game back then was solely Wimbledon as other tournaments weren’t shown on BritishTV and this is what I was referring to on McEnroe not been challenged in 83 & 84 McEnroe is my childhood Idol and to this day love listening to his commentary at Wimbledon which he attends every year he makes the game much more interesting than other commentators and has a great sense of humour
Hey thanks for uploading this. Great stuff. I disagree with Bjorn however and still reckon the 1980 Wimbly is the best ever final. Theirs was the greatest rivalry in tennis. Those two champions always had high level of respect for eachother as players and also off the court too, both then and now. Interesting that John these days has found some respect for Ivan Lendl, his third and fiercest rival. In the 1980's there was no love lost between them.
@tenniscollector It's impossible to compare generations but the 1980 Borg v McEnroe & 2008 Federer v Nadal are certainly the greatest Wimbledon finals. McEnroe had the utmost respect for Borg and never questioned a call against him. Sad thing about their rivalry is that it was over before it's time, Mcenroe won the 1981 final, Borg retired at 26. 1982 final Connors beat Mcenroe which was a great achievement(and Connors run at US open semi-final at 39) but no one challenged McEnroe in 1983 & 1984
@cattachi It´s the greatest for you and me, younger generations would pick the Wimbledon 2008 final, or the Australian Open 2012 final, older generations would pick matches you and I never saw. But the 1980 Wimbledon final took tennis to a whole new level of relevance, and the personality contrast is great, some say Roger VS Rafa, but to me Roger is too emotional compared to Borg, and Rafa is too cold compared to Mac.

The greatest match AT Wimbledon may have been Budge v. Van Cramm in 1937--although that was Davis Cup, not the All-England Championship tournament..
