For those of you that question... It isnt actually taking a long time to heat it up. Notice at the beginning of the video, when it says that 'events are accurate, but not shown in real time'? The vid is in extreme slow motion. All this happened in under a second. If it had taken any longer, you would see the laser track the missile, which is travelling at supersonic speed.

It still has the same limitations of light, but after the ship is destroyed by the laser, it will go through it and last as long as they can keep the light concentrated and have the power to keep it going.
