  • MADRE MIA ESO DEBIO DE REMOVER PUEBLO Y TIERRA EN ESE MOMENTO..............APARTE DE QUE BAILANDO ERA PURA DINAMITA..............TOTALMENTE FUERA DE CONTEXTO EN AQUELLA EPOCA......Y MENOS CON ESE CUERPO Y DESPARPAJO..........ERA Y SEGUIRA SIENDO LA REINA.........QUE COJAN EJEMPLO LAS MODERNAS DE AHORA..................................JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJJA

  • Josephine was truly an amazing performer. I had to research her for a drama biography, and her life was truly amazing! She makes all the entertainers today look like copycats! She will always be the best!

  • Somedays I wish I grew up in the 1920's.

  • luv the vid and josephene but hate the fact that its called hottentot though:(

  • Are you kidding? The French loved her (Americans too). I tried to find information to support your claim about them calling her phony, but could not. Anyway, the dances they did back then were different, so if your basing your opinion of her dancing skills based on what we have today that wouldn't be wise. As far as her singing goes...there are plenty of vids on here that show her talent.

  • No. I'm not kidding. The French loved the novelty of a negro dancing around topless while wearing a skirt of bannanas. To the Americans, Baker was just another Black woman.

  • They loved her for more than that...why would they continue to go see her long after she had passed the topless, bannana skirt age? Black Americans love her and regard her highly my friend ;-)

  • 1:51 is totally where beyonce must have gotten the single ladies thing from

  • sexy

  • She's almost doing sabar moves.

  • What's sabar?

  • West African dance style. Google it, or search for it here.

  • I saw one cli[p... Thanks, because I had never heard of it before...

  • No prob...

  • Anybody knows the title of the song that was used for the (sadly) muted video? A hint would be highly appreciated <3

  • i luv the style of the 20's

  • yes she was an african woman whoes body was kind of on display all her life even in death

  • i really admire the spirit of the black woman and her achievements, black people have always made leaps a bounds against all odds to produce a most excellent talent GREAT , JOSEPHINE BAKER

  • Ela é simplesmente fantástica!!!

    She's simply fantastic!!!

  • I think JB is amazing and I love that video of her. She is so beautiful and has the BEST moves!

I was wondering about the music though, cause in my language "hottentot" is a VERY degrading word for black people (I can't even imagine anyone uttering it), is it not so in English or is this just an unlucky coincidence with the combination?

  • i was actually thinking the same thing. Doesn't Hottentot refer to the Venus Hottentot, a South African woman, who was paraded around European. She was forced by whites to expose her naked body so viewers could look at her large, curvy behind and breasts.

  • Oh my, I had never heard about Venus Hottentot before. I wish I could say Man had come a long way since.... I can't even imagine what she and so many others, went and still go through every day. Sad.

  • find the youtube video: josephine baker dances juana la cubana. it has more music and more appropiate to this dance.

  • words cannot describe the love, awe, and respect i have for this woman!

  • This was colourized, right?

  • Looks like the "Twist" was started in 1925, not 1962

  • Lol, this dance is called The Charleston, and was started in 1923...

  • she was beautiful and incredibly sexy... she would be hot now or 1,000 years from now!

  • I'm sorry that I didn't know about this video until now. I was really hoping that other people on YouTube besides me would put music to this silent. The more the merrier, for sure. There are so many possibilities.

You did a fantastic job on this! I like how you enhanced the film by using (hot) period music. Very impressive! 5 stars!

  • i love her style of dance, to bad america couldnt c her talent

  • What a great video!Fantastic job to put this together.

  • This is really great! This dance with the Juana cubana is not a good combination at all and this one really is. Thanks!

  • > This dance with the Juana cubana is not a good combination

I made that video. I and a lot of people would disagree. But I totally respect your opinion, and you are right, this version is absolutely excellent!

  • Great video you put together. Many thanks for the effort you expended to make this clip the fine piece of work it is.

  • She wasn't a complete bomb in America before she made it in Europe. She had quite a few roles in all-black performances before her big break in France.

  • I agree with you randomuser - Josephine was popular here Just like some of today's entertainers, she was appreciated more across the pond than here. I've seen many talents hit it big away from America. An interesting fact for sure. Josephine was ahead of her time - singer, dancer, pure entertainer all the way. - Paula

  • Josephine was about 19 years old in this film. If she was 19 today, believe me she would have gotten a modeling contract.

  • j'aime bien ça façon de danser, c'est marrant et chaud a la fois

  • I have heard that song so many times when I was a kid growing up in New Orleans!I am ashamed that I enjoyed it UNTIL I found out what the title is -- a very derogatory term to refer to African Americans but it was a VERY OLD PIECE OF MUSIC and Americans in those days were very ignorant and stupid when it came to cultural diversity.I wonder if this person is really Josephine Baker or someone who looks like her. That nose is rather distinctive. I like it!

  • absolutely fantastic.. music matched wonderfully xxx from carole.

  • Thank you so much for putting the great Josephine Baker on Youtube...I missed the documentary on her twice! She was just awesome, what a talent...great singer, great dancer and a wonderful human being.

  • This clip is awesome, thank you! You did a great job on postsynchronization of the film with the sound. I had never heard of this band but I have now, and how!!! This tune is a perfect example illustrating the roaring 20's. I will definitely try to find some music by this fantastic orchestra.

  • This version works to the end. Inspiring artist and music just crazy ! Thank you.
