I was shocked when I realized that Mass Effect killed one of my characters...

I certainly was NOT shocked when playing Super Mario Bros as a kid. If you were a Nintendo gamer then you just knew that repetition was a key element in those games, so it certainly came as no surprise to see that the game went on after level 1-4. Also, it was kind of obvious. This was basically the only game using TWO level numbers. Once you entered level 1-2 it was clear how the game would progress. --> weak #1
