And the sad point is that the real story, one of the citizen militia enduring a 25 hour long bombardment, and turning away the greatest military power of it's time, of celebrating that victory by raising a flag that the British would have no trouble seeing, that story is inspiring. The one told here is just trash. That's just sad.
Why do people find it necessary to embellish and falsify stories that are heroic and truthful in their own right?
This version is so wrought with errors, it shouldn't be allowed on You Tube.
We were an independent nation - not colonies - during the War of 1812. It was Fort McHenry - not Fort Henry. Key's mission was to negotiate the release of a planter friend, not all the prisoners. He wasn't allowed to stay on the ship but was sent to another during the bombardment. LEAVE HISTORY ALONE!
BTW...The speaker keeps referring to the US as "colonies." Yet one more error. The US had been a sovereign nation for over forty years, and the British were NOT looking to take us back...just "punish" us for not letting them shanghai our sailors into their navy.
And lowering a flag was not a "special signal" for this battle. It is the commonly recognized signal for surrender.
This thing is just dreadful in its abuse of the truth.
This story is riddled with major errors. A gross misrepresentation of history. Key went to seek exchange of ONE prison. There weren't hundreds. The whole British fleet was NOT there. Fort McHenry WAS a military installation and NOT filled with civilians. The flag was not kept aloft by a pile of dying patriots.
The true story is inspiring enough and all this utterly bogus shlock does those who fought and died there a disservice.
@witness2history Thank you!!!! More people should point out and call out this tripe that some folks try to pass off as truth! You would think most people could recognize a BS story when they hear it but surprisingly a very large number do not and stuff like this goes viral.

A pastor should tell the truth. I am one myself.
