Checked with my friend John whom I consider the person most knowledgeable about 60s Bay Area bands and is an Airplane fan (we covered Volunteers when I was in his band 30 years ago). I guessed right. He says the original lyric was "Keep your head." and it got changed after they played it live a few times.
@gustavoPJones Yes. The Dormouse never actually said "Feed your head." The Dormouse told a long story about sisters whose names all started with "M." Again, punctuation is everything. It could be: "Remember what the Dormouse said. Feed your head. Feed your head." Two completely unrelated demands.
@bitterspice So the issue inspired me to go, get and read an Alice In Wonderland ebook, opting to have the original Tenniel illustrations. At the trial, the Mad Hatter's testifies "Well, at any rate the Dormouse said --" but the Hatter doesn't finish. So, the King asks "But what did the Dormouse say?" "That I can't remember," said the Hatter. "You MUST remember," remarked the King, "or I'll have you executed." Could the first draft of the lyric have been "Keep your head."?
