There are many excellent recordings of this cycle; but, I feel that this marriage of Miss Auger, ECO, and Tortelier is the superior one. I've listened to this recording for more than two decades and it is still a spiritual, mystical experience for me.
I assume that those who are fond of whoever else performed this song must be stoned by Arleen Auger's amazing interpretation of this beautiful masterpiece. She's in perfect harmony with the music's implication.
