This is Lea Salonga just because he voice isn't as broad and loud as it usually is doesn't mean it's not her though. Just remember maybe your sound through the computer isn't very good or you don't know that this song isn't very operatic as some of the others.
This is most certainly Lea. Remember that not only was this when her talent was much more raw, but it's recorded on an over twenty year old bootleg which doesn't give the best sound quality.
Was this after Lea Salonga had taken a hiatus and started her vocal training with Mary Hammond? There's a marked improvement in her singing here compared to the OLC, an improvement that was evident from the get go when the show transferred to Broadway. Thanks.
What some have credited to her change in vocal technique I believe was more because of the fact her voice was finishing developing. Listen to Lea Salonga in 88 and listen to her in 92, her vibrato becomes much stronger, her voice darker and her low notes more powerful. You can hear the difference clearly in her voice-over for Jasmine and Mulan, her voice matured greatly. It became better overall but lost the feel of innocence and youth that i preferred in OLC that disappeared a few years later.
I think that goes without saying as the voice matures, peaks and eventually declines. I think she still sounds youthful in certain songs because essentially, Salonga is a lyric soprano and has a bright ring to her voice. But yes, physical maturity of her voice as well as developing better vocal habits and technique are some of the contributors to what makes her the singer she is today.
You're right... This is from the very first "full" production. When it tranferred to NY, there were lots of little changes made. Including making the character of Ellen less broody and "poor me"...maybe her sitting by the bed watching him sleep (lying in wait for him to cry out her name again and write it down and wake him up and confront him right then and there...)was deemed a little coo-coo in the head. In NY, she was sleepless in the bed with him. Less psycho. I dunno. 2 cents.
I am not sure because this is not my vid...but I think tis may have been the original london cast so perhaps they changed it when it came to the usa..?
Thanks, Nick. :-) I really love Miss Saigon; the original cast recording actually succeeded in making me teary. The original cast here is wonderful. Please post some more. :-)
Was he a ghost? Was he a lie?? *ahhh gorgeous*

this is Lea. Vibrato is perfect and as blury as it is, you can see her face. Watch her mouth, it's Lea.

The positioning is different here. In all versions of the show I saw, Ellen is sitting on the bed with Chris, not separately.

I never thought it was psycho, just sad.
In the sense that she had resigned herself to sitting up every night waiting to comfort him.
