If we can afford 2 wars, saving tens of useless banks and the salaries of hundreds of politicians, i think we can afford sending a couple of assholes to mars too
I had the same type of dreams like Carl repeatedly when I was a kid. "...achieving flight required a certain cast of mind. It's impossible to describe it in words, but I can remember what it was like to this day..." :)
Me too! And I sometimes still get those but the mental state required has become harder and harder to achieve. As a kid I was able to alter dreams in other ways too by simply willing change but that too has become harder. It is as if my adult brain has become too rigid, too reasonable for it :(.
YES, YES, and YES. space exploration is essential for a stimulation of science for the new generations. "People everywhere hunger to understand." -Sagan
I love how Carl Sagan videos are just an insular bubble from the rest of youtube. There's no arguments, dislikes or petty name-calling. Just pure appreciation.
I've played Kerbal Space Program, and I know for a fact that the design in the first segment of this video would not get off the ground. The phallic shape of it would tear it to pieces against the atmosphere.
I've had that dream many times, however to get started I had to dogie paddle.....Then I would slowly go up until i could move freely. Think of how those jets were moving and thats what I did, and I wish I could really do that. We need to bring Carl Sagan back, lets go back in time in another universe cose to ours, and snatch their Carl Sagan! 0.o;
Whenever I watch any of these, it brings a tear to my eye. They remind me that there really is beauty in the world, and that not all things are doom, gloom, and misery. Sagan put it beautifully once before; we humans are capable of greatness.
Whatever it is about Sagan that made him so charismatic, so capable of reaching so many, I hope that this generation has its own. Science needs its poets. The world needs them.
I am so proud that as of the time I liked this video when it has 9,538 views and 741 likes, there is not a single dislike. Some of the other sites I go to, have an anti-spam algorithm that puts dislikes even on eminently popular videos. This is just a well loved and deservedly so video.
I wish Dr. Carl Sagan was still with us. He did so much for the exploration of space, without (to my basic google search abilities) ever being able to get there himself.
I wonder: how did they answer the new guinians? Did she look away and say "Nobody now" could they articulate to the new guinians that it was the mess that is modern politics that stopped further exploration of the moon? I wonder, what would they have said if we answered that it was because of politics that we never went back? I for one, would not have been able to look them in the face without feeling a little shame that we never went back
All TV needs to stop one day for this entire series to be played. Then all TV must be turned off. Imagine our capabilities without TV screens ruling our life.
RIP Carl Sagan, one of the greatest human beings to grace the earth.
inspirational series, it's so calming to hear his voice with this musical background and images. thanks for making these videos and sharing the beauty of it, Callum.
One of the most important things for the youth of humanity, & ALL forthcoming generations, is to hear & feel the words of Carl Sagan. No one has ever brought a more humbling & awe inspiring perspective of reality, to the thought of the common man. If aliens are to ever receive communications from earth, I hope Sagan's words are what they hear.
I love seeing people write great comments about videos like this one. what I like even more is seeing how popular those comments become when other people give it a thumbs up. It lets me know that there are in fact many people on youtube who dont give LYING FUCK about Rihanna's latest music video or the trailer to the new twilight movie.
R.I.P Carl Sagan- easily one of the most inspirational men in science.
Damn it... this is so inspirational. Thanks dude. Good work, good work,Good work, good work,Good work, good work,.... I wish I could keep saying it. :)
Today i was off of work and decided to watch the entire cosmos series again for shits and giggles. Then I found you today. Subbed, gonna start from the beginning. Thanks for the effort, this was poignant and beautiful.
@d3st88 No lol i get why we might not detect their radio waves or communications but they would most likely be ALL OVER the galaxy and even other galaxies and i mean even if it were one single civilization that advanced millions of years before us. I only say this because of exponential growth of technology, it seems that humans, given half a millions years, could accomplish spreading through the entire galaxy and even others...... But im open for ideas.. I want a galactic alliance!! xD
Out of curiosity, how many people can honestly say they've had the dream Carl Sagan describes?
When he described the dream, and the experience of lifting away from solid ground through the exertion of some indescribable portion of will alone, I can recall having that *exact* dream, numerous times. I even recall the knowledge that I must concentrate, in order to avoid the plummet back to Earth - and the rare times I lost that command over gravity, only to regain it only inches above the ground
I really am wondering about all that i thought was true..... All the evidence points at life being possible on many other planets but what if we truly are the only intelligence in our galaxy.... I have read almost all of Carl Sagans books and I credit him to being the person who makes me want to be something someday but where are the aliens or their radio waves... where are all the Dyson spheres and stuff like that? I desperately want there to be other intelligence out there.
Carl also asks the where are the aliens or their radio waves question in his books and he answers them too. If I remember correctly it is mentioned in Pale Blue Dot and Cosmos. To be honest, if I were an alien I would want nothing to do with humanity. We are a savage, stupid, backward race - we mistreat our fellow human beings and our ecosystem, we are illogical, willfully ignorant and most humans make me sick. There's hope for us though, as Sagan often reminds me.
