Mother F-ker. That is an absoluate MOTHER F-Ker. I detected some resemblence with Mike Murley (Canadian Sax Player - track - Blue Mustard - group "Time Warp" with Ed Bickert, Barry Elms, Kevin Turcotte and Steve Wallace).
This is the cadenza from Channel One Suite. I saw Steve play this many times, and each time was completely different and amazing. An incredible player who was tops on most folks lists in the business.
The non-musician viewers can compare this to a mason who gathers his brick, sand, water, cement then lays his footing, then begins adding bricks and mortar and at the end he has built a cathedral. The musicians understand this intuitively, especially if they have any experience improvising.
Because it's different than the typical let me see how many notes I can play. "The Count" is like a Miles Davis...He can play beautiful long tones, but has the capability of incredible technical passages...You can't disrespect the guy that Buddy Rich praised, whom he introduced as the Buddy Rich Big Band featuring Steve Marcus
I don't know how you can't like that but you probably like stuff like Kenny G....not real music.
@TurkeyinAbucket you wouldn't know random if it come and bit you in the ass then. There is a huge difference between random finger wigglers and brilliant playing.
That he is. And you know, even this cadenza is nothing compared to his Channel One Suite solo on the live recording. He quotes just about everything. And his altissimo, especially in that other recording, is, next to Al Gallodoro, the best I've ever heard.
Yeah, that's the one I was referring to. He quotes everything from "Well, you needn't," to "La Fiesta," to Carmen. Great tone, too; he proves, just like the tenor on the Berlin Philharmoniker recording of Bolero's Ravel that you can get a great tone on a metal mouthpiece.
The VAST majority of metal mouthpieces are terrible (at least, in my opinion). There are only a select few capable of real tone and carrying power.
Vintage Florida Otto Links and New Vintage New York Otto Links are great on tenor. Just listen to Dexter Gordon's old tone, or Marcus. Or even early Stan Getz.
The main reason I like my metal piece is simple - it has practically the same dimensions as my clarinet mouthpiece. Hard Rubber mouthpieces are much bigger in diameter.
Well, on alto, I love the C* Soloist as well. I'm actually playing on a Meyer G right now, but the Soloist is a GREAT mouthpiece for all situations.
On larger-bored tenors, though, such as my Keilwerth Shadow, I find that a good metal piece can get a more focused sound (almost as good as a clarinet), while not being too bright or edgy. This is especially if it has a good ligature.
Well, that's just me anyway. At any rate, Steve Marcus is the man again. Haha!
Well, hey, whatever works. I mean, every one of these conversations boils down to an "it's the player, not the equipment" conclusion.
However, many die-hard Selmer players are stunned to find out just how many legends (Bird, Cannonball, Dexter Gordon) played on vintage American saxes, and how many modern players play on Yamaha 62's and Customs and Keilwerth SX-90s, SX-90Rs, and Shadows. And that's not even touching Yanagisawa...
Reason I'm checking this out is because one of the best solos I ever heard is Steve Marcus on soprano on 'Are You too Clever?' by Larry Coryell. Very expressive player.
I miss Steve and Buddy's Band. Thanks for posting it. I saw them overe 70 times and I still think nothing came close to the excitement of seeing them play in a small club on the road.
and to the tone thing with his jaw people were discussing, yes he is doing it on purpose. it affects the tone if you know how to do it right, but its different on diferent set ups so just make sure you adjust how you do it when playing on different mpcs/horns
It is actually a part of his tone. Notice how when he plays lower he pulls his jaw back, and higher it goes forward. Check out closeups of most sax players and they do that. I'd bet he has no clue he's doing it. Players do weird things with their face without knowing unless they look in the mirror.
But, no, it's not so much for pitch, it for effect. It does change the tone a little. Thats the point. It gives the low notes subtones. It makes the high notes project. It's not on purpose, it's just what happens after you play for 40 years and get good.
@Jazzman303 Its true, Im not hatin' on Buddy Rich, but there are clips on youtube of Rich screaming at the band, and singling out Marcus for performing poorly. He was a real tough guy to work for, no lie...His attitude could have definitely been better
Buddy said Steve was his favorite cause "no clams." You watch some clips with some of the other guys, man, they just weren't prepared, clams all over the place. This is how Buddy's reputation came to be one of perfection for 2 hours a nite on the bandstand. Led to lots of stress and argita.
Steve is the one who should be credited with that amazing sax solo in Gerry Rafferty's "Baker St". He played it first in "half a Heart" and then it was copied.
I really enjoyed the cadenza at the beginning and the end. I realize that he had to play for the audience in the blues section, but what a talented player!!
steve marcus was the most underated tenor player. when he would solo he would capture your attention immediately from first to last note . a sleeping giant in the music world that is truly missed. mike r.
I too saw Steve Marcus with Buddy a number of times; he could play the sh*t out of the tenor, but, like all soloists with Buddy, he usually had to cut things short. Marcus also did some good work with Kenton, who always needed to have a couple of soloists who could deal with all the brass. Marcus was enormously powerful on the horn.
I was lucky enough to see Steve play the cadenza in Channel One Suite many times. He is one of the all time masters of the tenor sax. Near the end of buddies reign, Steve often played the cadenza an an A-B-A format, but you were never sure what he felt like doing that night. A great man, in a great band, playing a great chart!
That chart was in my book when I played in college and would be my closing number in any show I might have programmed. One of my all time favorite charts!

As I get older the slower tunes have begun to stand out more and more maybe it's just sentimentality.
