  • Steve Marcus is DA MAN!!!!!

  • Love the way he leads the audience into the band. Brings everything back to the supporting music.

  • Best ending to anything ever composed out of anything...anything.

  • Great everything

  • Not sure how he was rated but it's definitely under.

  • live is always amazing!

  • listend to justin bieber and thought to me: poor world.

but this is... not to discribe with words .

  • I always loved the way Marcus played... saw him 6 times with buddy!! the guy was one of the best that ever played!

  • what a sounds...........

  • definitely underrated; great playing

  • amazing!!!

  • is this song called "half a heart" ?

  • @yofinn86 no it's not, I was looking for that as well. you can hear that song at napster on his album Tomorrow Never Knows.

  • @yofinn86 This is the cadenza for Channel 1 Suite.

  • Mother F-ker. That is an absoluate MOTHER F-Ker. I detected some resemblence with Mike Murley (Canadian Sax Player - track - Blue Mustard - group "Time Warp" with Ed Bickert, Barry Elms, Kevin Turcotte and Steve Wallace).

  • Steve Marcus plays one of the greatest solos ever on the tune 'Foreplay' , on Larry Corryell's 1972 Album 'Offering"

  • fucking awesome

  • what's tha name of this song???!$?

  • ya just know thats a classic "link" piece steve's blowin

  • This is the cadenza from Channel One Suite. I saw Steve play this many times, and each time was completely different and amazing. An incredible player who was tops on most folks lists in the business.

  • OHaa sooo gut wie der will ich auch mal sein !! das ist extrem !

  • Wow! I hear some of his licks in my head when I play, they just don't come out that way ;).

  • so goddamn good. flawless.

  • Ya Steve! Sweet. Everything covered nicely. Really enjoyed my first hearing of this solo. Going to check out other offerings.

  • Amazingggggg i wish i can play like that : (

  • Awesomeness!!!!!

  • ooooh 0:53 loved that

  • What Type Of Chord Changes Did He Use In This Solo, Cause It's Really Nice!!!

  • why did u cut of the ovation...i would loved to have seen the audiences reaction to that solo

  • A young Jay Craig there on Bari......from Edinburgh Scotland...the lad did well!!

  • listen LA MAGIA DEL SAX by Minicillo

  • That was exceptionally awesome.

  • did u hear wot he did at the begining sounded like he was playin to horns at once.......

  • These slow blues ballads are the ACID TEST for any soloist..

As I get older the slower tunes have begun to stand out more and more maybe it's just sentimentality.

Speaking as a drummer it leaves little for one to do but lay back keeping time and enjoy the sound of the horn MMMMMMMarcus!!!!

    What a player!

  • * * * * *

    overtones =)

  • swow de bola!

  • Shame on you. That's what people that have no skill always say. This guy lives in every note he plays.

  • must be very unhappy

  • nope.

  • MAD!!!!!!!

  • everything about steve's tone made me want to pick up the horn. love it!

  • right on!

  • this guy blows 8 )

  • Where can I get the whole video?

  • holy good god i love this guys licks!

  • i love the second 0:36

  • omg :|

  • love him!! someday ill be able to play like him..

  • ^ my idol, and goal style/tone

  • great tone.

i liked the cadenza , blues was just ok.

the type of sound while post coltrane is one that uses proximity to the mic for warmth. ala early70's henderson and many more.

    when was this?

  • Good sax player. No doubt who his main influence was........John Coltrane.

  • yeah and Brecker influences, or Brecker was influenced by Steve

  • Is this during Channel One Suite?

  • "The Count"...sound is beauty

  • OMG

  • WOW... His well sax player

  • *bows down*

    ahhh sooo good

    i love the tenor :]

  • good tenor player

  • WHAT A LOSS A GREAT MUSICIAN

  • The non-musician viewers can compare this to a mason who gathers his brick, sand, water, cement then lays his footing, then begins adding bricks and mortar and at the end he has built a cathedral. The musicians understand this intuitively, especially if they have any experience improvising.

    Steve Marcus, RIP.

  • there is nothing random about any of this solo.

  • What are you talking about?

    Random and Fancy?

    Ok...

  • the begining it's too like what the..

  • Comment removed

  • How can you hate that style?

Because it's different than the typical let me see how many notes I can play. "The Count" is like a Miles Davis...He can play beautiful long tones, but has the capability of incredible technical passages...You can't disrespect the guy that Buddy Rich praised, whom he introduced as the Buddy Rich Big Band featuring Steve Marcus

I don't know how you can't like that but you probably like stuff like Kenny G....not real music.

  • @TurkeyinAbucket you wouldn't know random if it come and bit you in the ass then. There is a huge difference between random finger wigglers and brilliant playing.

  • Many thanks Youtube for bringing this guy to my attention----he,s really good

  • Most excellent...

  • Dooooode

    This is AMAZING

  • I use a metal Sugal 8* and its great!

  • A great player and an integral part of the Buddy Rich Band ... Thank you for posting.

  • channel one suite?

  • yea it is

  • BR had so many great tenors! Don Menza, Pat Labarta (sp), and this guy.

If only the rest of his saxophone section was always as consistently good...

  • This guy? At least name him, sheesh. Steve Marcus, saxophone beast.

  • That he is. And you know, even this cadenza is nothing compared to his Channel One Suite solo on the live recording. He quotes just about everything. And his altissimo, especially in that other recording, is, next to Al Gallodoro, the best I've ever heard.

  • Oh of course. Have you heard the recording of Channel One where he takes like, a 20 minute solo? Wow, blew my mind.

  • Yeah, that's the one I was referring to. He quotes everything from "Well, you needn't," to "La Fiesta," to Carmen. Great tone, too; he proves, just like the tenor on the Berlin Philharmoniker recording of Bolero's Ravel that you can get a great tone on a metal mouthpiece.

  • Maybe it's just the ones I've tried, but metal just don't appeal to me. Rubber always seems more appealing to me.

  • The VAST majority of metal mouthpieces are terrible (at least, in my opinion). There are only a select few capable of real tone and carrying power.

Vintage Florida Otto Links and New Vintage New York Otto Links are great on tenor. Just listen to Dexter Gordon's old tone, or Marcus. Or even early Stan Getz.

The main reason I like my metal piece is simple - it has practically the same dimensions as my clarinet mouthpiece. Hard Rubber mouthpieces are much bigger in diameter.

  • See I've always preferred the larger, openess. My C* Soloist on my alto feels perfect to me. I tend to overblow on metal mouthpieces.

  • Well, on alto, I love the C* Soloist as well. I'm actually playing on a Meyer G right now, but the Soloist is a GREAT mouthpiece for all situations.

On larger-bored tenors, though, such as my Keilwerth Shadow, I find that a good metal piece can get a more focused sound (almost as good as a clarinet), while not being too bright or edgy. This is especially if it has a good ligature.

Well, that's just me anyway. At any rate, Steve Marcus is the man again. Haha!

  • Ah. Yeah, I dont have too much experience with Keilwerth's yet. I prefer older Selmer or new Yamaha models.

  • Well, hey, whatever works. I mean, every one of these conversations boils down to an "it's the player, not the equipment" conclusion.

However, many die-hard Selmer players are stunned to find out just how many legends (Bird, Cannonball, Dexter Gordon) played on vintage American saxes, and how many modern players play on Yamaha 62's and Customs and Keilwerth SX-90s, SX-90Rs, and Shadows. And that's not even touching Yanagisawa...

  • Clearly you've never heard of Brillhart...

  • yeah, im playing on a jody jazz classic 7 currently, and i love it. the spoiler makes a big difference as well, takes a little getting used to.

  • Reason I'm checking this out is because one of the best solos I ever heard is Steve Marcus on soprano on 'Are You too Clever?' by Larry Coryell. Very expressive player.

  • I miss Steve and Buddy's Band. Thanks for posting it. I saw them overe 70 times and I still think nothing came close to the excitement of seeing them play in a small club on the road.

  • at the very beginning im thinking "psh, i can play that." and than he starts going insane and im just like... wow...

  • The begining of his solo sounds like brecker...

I didn't know this saxophonist, he's really good godamn, I love the blues...

  • That's not Steve Marcus. It's long time Buddy Rich Band lead tenor saxophonist Don Menza.

  • Definitely Marcus. Steve Marcus played with Rich from '75~'80

  • 100% Steve Marcus

  • My mistake...sorry.

  • it is steve

  • HOLY SHIT. This is beautiful, beautiful stuff. Thanks for posting!

  • anyone know what mpc he's playin on?

and to the tone thing with his jaw people were discussing, yes he is doing it on purpose. it affects the tone if you know how to do it right, but its different on diferent set ups so just make sure you adjust how you do it when playing on different mpcs/horns

  • it looks like a vintage otto link florida super tone master. one of the best tenor pieces ever made...

  • Definitely.

  • Comment removed

  • thats so he stays in tune you muppet

  • It is actually a part of his tone. Notice how when he plays lower he pulls his jaw back, and higher it goes forward. Check out closeups of most sax players and they do that. I'd bet he has no clue he's doing it. Players do weird things with their face without knowing unless they look in the mirror.

  • Did you just imply steve marcus has a bad tone?

Man, people will say anything on the internet.

But, no, it's not so much for pitch, it for effect. It does change the tone a little. Thats the point. It gives the low notes subtones. It makes the high notes project. It's not on purpose, it's just what happens after you play for 40 years and get good.

  • People HAVE to be getting stupider...

  • Players like this are great, they just feel the music and go with whatever. Great tenor saxophone, I play tenor also, Hes great

  • Buddy was such a dick... I bet he cursed him out on the nights when he didn't play as well as this...

  • @Jazzman303 Its true, Im not hatin' on Buddy Rich, but there are clips on youtube of Rich screaming at the band, and singling out Marcus for performing poorly. He was a real tough guy to work for, no lie...His attitude could have definitely been better

  • @Jazzsaxman1 I had a teacher who played in his band. He was scared to death of him. Hes got Buddy Rich PTSD.

  • @Jazzman303 yeah, buddy rich was an AMAZINGGGGGG drummer, but people hated him cause he was an asshole lol

  • squint squint. WOW.......

Im gonna be like him, you'll see!!

  • Buddy said Steve was his favorite cause "no clams." You watch some clips with some of the other guys, man, they just weren't prepared, clams all over the place. This is how Buddy's reputation came to be one of perfection for 2 hours a nite on the bandstand. Led to lots of stress and argita.

  • very moving tenor work.

  • Quite superb!

  • Steve is the one who should be credited with that amazing sax solo in Gerry Rafferty's "Baker St". He played it first in "half a Heart" and then it was copied.

  • I really enjoyed the cadenza at the beginning and the end. I realize that he had to play for the audience in the blues section, but what a talented player!!

  • steve marcus was the most underated tenor player. when he would solo he would capture your attention immediately from first to last note . a sleeping giant in the music world that is truly missed. mike r.

  • I was more familair with Steve's fine Soprano playing and am glad to hear him on tenor.

  • Steve Marcus - sadly, gone. But never forgotten. One helluva sax, reed player and also one fine human being!

  • This is great and makes want to post up a video like this.

  • I too saw Steve Marcus with Buddy a number of times; he could play the sh*t out of the tenor, but, like all soloists with Buddy, he usually had to cut things short. Marcus also did some good work with Kenton, who always needed to have a couple of soloists who could deal with all the brass. Marcus was enormously powerful on the horn.

  • Those sax sounds are played so beatifully

  • I was lucky enough to see Steve play the cadenza in Channel One Suite many times. He is one of the all time masters of the tenor sax. Near the end of buddies reign, Steve often played the cadenza an an A-B-A format, but you were never sure what he felt like doing that night. A great man, in a great band, playing a great chart!

That chart was in my book when I played in college and would be my closing number in any show I might have programmed. One of my all time favorite charts!

  • i love steve marcus - such an amazing tone and fantastic manouveres around the scales.

  • also a great altissimo register

  • Cssna's only video is of him playing Freebird on guitar hero. Need anyone say more? As we know there are all kinds of trolls and fools who post on youtube. It's a shame that their type looks the same as everyone else's.

  • ...i didnt like all the sudden and long stops but idk... it was weird

  • you want to try doing something of that caliber

    it's actually pretty hard!

you probably listen that Dave Koz shit though so it's ok if you think it sucked.

  • Wow, you must be an idiot.

  • I bet you can't even play the radio to make a comment like that!

  • this man says it sux. that is his opinion and no need for name calling.

  • There's deffinate skill all right, but it's not my kind of thing.

I wouldn't say it "sucks" by any means, but I'd rather here a great melody instead of constant scale soloing.

  • anyone know the song name?

  • the song is Channel One Suite

  • sounded like he had a little John Coltrane moment a 1:37 haha just kidding

  • I love the 70's outfits. They're dressed like my eighth grade gym teacher.

  • Great!!!

RIP Mr. Steve Marcus, you were a giant, one of the best.

  • He gets such a bright yet soft sound... Is this an Otto Link of Frank Morgan mouthpiece????

  • Otto Link.

  • thanx, i was pretty close though!

  • this guy is a monster. I'll have to check out "Buddy's Buddies", he plays with them.

  • yea i sucked at alto sax

, teacher lectured me on not playing bluesy shizt

  • "playing sax is like making love to your gf"

alway heard that, this vid is the proof

  • oops forget that i thort it was art blakey not buddy rich :P

  • did this guy plan on the famous recordin of moanin'?

  • love it

  • Steve Marcus is/was one of the few. god gifted excellent saxophonist

and encourages young sax players like myslef 2 keep playing

  • Bit hard to paly like this, but u doing well and controlable. gud work. gr8.

  • Talk about extreme control/knowledge of arppegiations/creativity....love the lick at 1:10

  • i know awesome

  • love all of the arpeggio stuff in the begining. Sweet stuff

  • one of the greatest saxophonists ever, maybe the best ever

  • That boy can play! Great tone, nice sound, and some nice playing!!!!

  • The best white tenor player there ever was, and ever will be.

  • Wrong, Stan Getz.

  • siiicckk. Amazing control.

  • Yeah...awesome stuff. Thanks for posting this.

  • im in gr 6 n i play tenor

  • great job

  • what is the title of this thing!??!?!?!

  • I am a guitarist but I loooove the sound of a tenor...amazing! 5 stars!

  • i liked the don menza solo better i must say, but this isn't bad either

  • Steve can certainly play a mean Tenor.

    BTW,

Check out that Selmer Veritone plug on his neck (the horn that is).;)

  • this guy sucks

  • WRONG!!!

  • The best performance of Steve Marcus!!

  • marcus is the man.saw him in 78 with buddy, awsome
