I bought this LP in '74 along with Lou Reed Live (same concert) which has the best version of Vicious and Waiting for my Man. Dick Wagner & Steve Hunter were Alice Cooper's guitarists & Big Lou stole em for these great LPs. This is just awesome rocknroll..."its in the center of my head"
I remember when this record came out, I was working at a record store and we were blown away by it, although we called the picture of Lou on the front his Boris Karloff imitation, what a great album though.
I don't know why, but that guitar break has always done something to me. Its nothing special, but its brilliant! Absolutely brilliant. Its my favorite guitar piece of all time... And I can't tell you exactly why. Its spellbinding to me. I originally bought this album in '74 and wore out two copies over the years.
Thanks for posting. This is one of the most brilliant pieces of music ever created. Thirty years later - it still sucks you in, drags you along and throws you off the cliff!
This song massacres just about anything else on the horizon, both musically and lyrically. This arrangement is simply an emotional avalanche. I bought this album when it came out and I was 16. My parents listened to most of it with me. They were anti-hippy and they thought it was excellent stuff. I've never forgotten that. Probably a reason I've stayed clean b/c they were willing to invest time in my interest- even if it was not their own.
I love this song. I love the lyrics. I love Lou Reed. I loved this song before I ever discovered opiates. Since I have been clean and sober I can appreciate the lyrics even more. Lou is a poet. He can describe the human condition of someome in the grip better than anything I have ever read. Even sober his words encompass the frustration perfectly. I do not condone the use of drugs but by God, I understand them.
Lou is one of the most underappreciated artists of his time. I am glad I head him!
Looking back, it's amazing that I didn't do heroine in my early teens listening to this song. Did everything else though. Guess I was just afraid that if I crossed that line, I might not make it back. If I ever discover that I'm terminally ill w/ no way out, I just may have to do it, while listening to this song of course.
and it always sounds at the end like he is saying, "Brian doesn't care"
and that is me.
Had this album...well, who owned anything except the friend with the parents and huge speakers? in 1975 Now I have this baby into the bose wave thing...it could put out a fire. Or start one. Listen to THAT F ing LEAD. Oh man... Bass player is smoking...Oh man.
"Brian doesn't care...and I guess I just don't know, and I guess...
my brother once warned me if he ever started doing H, I was to know he wanted to die. That is what happened and there was nothing I could do to stop him. And a thousand Jim jim's in this town, and all the bodies piled up in mounds
"and all the politicians making crazy sounds and all the dead bodies piled up in mounds and I guess I just don't know..." Where the hell is are health care?? Lou Reed is # 1 - Heroin is Satan along with Crack... Fuck drugs!!
Music to my fears. Extraordinary.

When the smack begins to flow
And I really don't care anymore
About all you Jim-Jims in this town
And everybody putting everybody else down
And all the politicians making crazy sounds
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds."
(Followed by Steve Hunter's totally off the hook guitar solo).
You can feel the rush!
