@ceilinggod birds don't and they do just fine. Lot of studies are done on birds in correlation to designing aircraft. Long ago, aircraft wings used to never be designed to bend up as they moved away from the fuselage, but now they do on the new 787 very similar to how a birds winds are while in flight.
