  • … Tristesse… what else could someone think ?

  • this is lovely...lilting, giving respect and forethought to each phrase...the 2nd part where there is much intensity and chaoticness, which I have found boring with others that I have listened to...she makes it exciting and you look forward to every new phrase...its a journey with her...congratulations! job well done!!!

    L.

  • my god, she does the best interpretation i've ever heard, blows rubenstien, lang lang, ashkenazi and all those guys out of the water.

  • Valentina's playing is just so amazing! Absolutely beautiful!

  • Envy and Edward Elric at the Gate of Truth.

  • lowly quality of sound..

  • Her nose is huge. but such a beautiful pianist

  • 1:17 *dies*

  • Bösendorfer! :-) not that standard Steinway sound.

  • Valentina "Lisztisita", i love her!

  • Que bela interpretação, meus parabéns. bjs S2.......

  • Comment removed

  • I've heard better interpretations... aren't you supposed to hold the first bass note in the beginning?

  • The best pianist in the world

  • Is this etude called "tristesse"?

  • @ruffybarretdepalla It is popularly known by that name, but chopin himself did not name his etudes.

  • @ruffybarretdepalla its nickname given by people but chopin didnt like to have his writings named

  • OMG i finally found this song :D

  • Que maravilha!!!

  • hankster i agree 100%

  • god im so impressed with her---im lookin for rubinstein doin it-----i just found what i wanted

  • im glad im not the only one that cries to these

  • i understand the guy crying ----its so touching

  • its a hard one to do

  • shes got that perfect

  • Great expression. I really like your interpretation, sound, and tempo. Perfect.

  • best melody in the world

  • Amazing! Thank You!

  • i like this interpretation, it doesn't have as much as rubato as the rest and I like it this way.

  • Chopin is not classical, he's part of the romantic period.. Beethoven, and Mozart is classical

  • @106karla If you wanna be really technical about it, Beethoven is considered the very first "Romantic" composer. In fact according to a wiki, 'In 1810 E.T.A. Hoffmann called Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven the three "Romantic Composers" ' so maybe take it easy on the musical history terminology; among us "common folk" it's pretty much acceptable to refer to music ranging from Baroque to Romantic periods with the sweeping term "classical" and I think that's really okay at the end of the day.

  • @thisguyheisaguy I semi-agree, although I generally like to be more specific, it is not so bad to put the time periods under the term "classical". Although, there is no way Mozart is a romantic composer (Hoffmann is just a wee bit wrong). Also, Beethoven's placement can be argued both ways (classical or romantic). Personally, he's more of a transition, his early years were classical style based, but in is later years, and also when he was really deaf, he was definitely a romantic composer. :P

  • @thebrainnugget Thanks for the input, friend.

  • 20 dislikes? These people are soul-less zombies.

  • you make me cry every time i listen to you play this. :'-) so beautiful.

  • Passionate and powerful -3

  • god shes powerfull

  • im impressed with her---its not easy to do

  • She's really good at bringing out the melody in this, and Traumerei. Lovingly played.

  • @Pavle245 I love the scherzos... they are beautiful and powerful but sensible at the same time... I personally like the 3rd one best, and I just finished learning to play it, Im always exhausted after playing it, but its worth it lol (but im more into the war sonatas of prokofiev (the 6th one specially, but i wont recommend you listening to it on youtube, most versions are ugly in my taste))

  • how come this etude is so different than the others? was chopin going through some stress or something when he wrote this one in particular?

  • @drummerboy91893 I think it was to do with him thinking he could never return back to Poland because of what had happened with the failed-uprising (symbolic for him, not as in he would be treated badly).

  • @TheImpressionnant interesting

  • This was the first chopin I ever learned to play (besides Raindrop Prelude, but I don't count the technically 'easy' stuff), and have since lost interest in playing a tune I learned a long time ago. However, this wonderfully graceful rendition of one of the (quite rightly) most popular Chopin works has inspired me to go and play it again. Thank you Valentina for all of your inspiring performances :)

  • Who said Lisitsa was only a technical pianist ?

  • I started crying half way through and I don't know why...

  • @Costful me too.... i don't know why either..! i really love this tune.

  • @Costful Me too. It reminds me of some saddness...

  • @Costful me too

  • es bellizimaa esta melodia.. la escuche por primera vez en una novela.....y desde entonces me enamorooooo

  • goodness she looks so relaxed... beautiful... so inspirational *0*

  • Valentina you are a very beautiful pianist and touch beautifully (: <3

  • yeah, i'm the 1000st liker :D

btw, wonderful performance, without words... ♥

  • i love this piece, i love playing this piece, but i didn't really liked this performance, it seems that missed emotion

  • I'm this piece and is not easy but i love so much!

  • This is the background music of the movie Jezebel where Bette Davis won her 2nd Oscar for Best Actress.

  • The first time I saw Valentina on u tube, I thought "Hmm, a hot blond playing Chopin etudes...what a novel idea!" I admit I was skeptical of her at first, even though she seemed to be tearing through these horribly difficult pieces as if whistling a catchy tune. Imagine my surprise when I finally realized that this woman is probably THE greatest pianistic talent of her time, and a true artist. Boy, the things you can find on u tube!

  • @TheHankster30 She'sbloody but she hears and senses Chopins sensual pieces as a women and adds a new sharp to it?

  • How can a music be so beautiful? It is just amazing, and Valentina is the best woman pianist I have Ever heard, ir she is not the best pianist I have Ever heard

  • This is one of the greatest etudes that Chopin ever composed. :)

  • holly fuck understand it's not a damn song...

  • This song is not a song, its the voice of God.

  • Jo Stafford put words into this tune....called No Ohter Love...YOUTUBE it..

  • Omg the part from 2.16 - 2.29 is BEAST!

I'm learning that part as well now, and I can tell you it's quite difficult. :')

Nevertheless, my favourite piece of classic music.

  • @Rennnnsz Don't say anything about this part ... :'( I teach this 2 hours in a day... It was my most horrible day...

I'm french, sorry for my English. x)

  • Her hands moved beautifully, had a kind of artistic motion in it.Even though her fingers took off from the keyboard all the time, her music still sounds very legato and singing into my heart.

  • This is Poetry!

  • Thank you Charlie! once again a video to sit back and relax to...beautiful, a lovely pianist and lovely music(Turned into a love song!) but I prefer this original rendition of this Classical piece>Liz

  • That is a piece honest, honest truth

  • This piece also called "Tristesse" (sadness) definitely brings some sadness into your heart :( So emotional !

  • @sevylines Though it was not Chopin who called it Tristess.... It´s my favourite *sigh*

  • Once it gets to the third page of the etude it's so hard but not for Valentina =D She's an amazing pianist!

  • thank you!

  • I really admire you Vlentina!!=))))! and i love that étude(:

  • This makes me so sad.. I got brought here by Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon.

It was played when Zoisite was dying and he sent this song as a message to Endymion/Mamoru, Kunzite, Neohrite and Jadeite. Beautiful piece <3

  • Why is this an etude? This is just too beautiful to be an etude...

  • @dberry02jr Why an etude could'nt be beautiful?

  • I was taught this piece when I was 10 yrs old. I just love it...My private piano teacher used to sing it with me, 'No Other Love'.

  • Is this one of easier Chopin etudes to learn, or this is one of more difficult ones?

  • @Pavle245 This would be one of the easiest ones, mainly because of the slower tempo. Most of the faster ones are just so HARD! :D

  • @Pavle245 easiest to learn, hardest to master

  • Comment removed

  • @Scriabin28 Cool, thanks. I can already play it, and it's only Chopin's etude I've ever practised (I'm more into scherzos now). But, everywhere I look, they say "Op.10 No.3 is one of easiest". But, how can that be? Have they seen that chromatic scale that appears in it? It's damn hard. Thanks again, cheers.

  • @Pavle245 Hi! That's funny, I thought I'd deleted that comment. Cancel everything I said, anyway: I got confused and thought you were talking about no.2 for some reason...

  • @Scriabin28 No problem. :) But still, this is pretty hard etude. Look at part 2:02...

  • @Pavle245 I would say it is not easy because it is so slow! I have read an article on wikipedia about the op 10 no3 . It was quite good! read it and you will understand how difficult this piece is!

  • @Milbennase Well, I know that this is quite difficult because I can play it, but I don't know how difficult this is because this is the only Chopin's etude I have learned (I'm more into Scherzos now :))

  • :( i wish you could transfer your powers to me Valentina :/ or at least magically bless my sight reading skill lol. how in the world do you play the totentanz by liszt... it's incredible....

  • Hmm, it looks like she is playing with her eyes closed, beautiful piece, brilliantly played!

  • *envy* I'm learning this MASTERPIECE right now and I can play only the firs movement (0:00 - 1:25) but DAMN IT how can she play those notes so easilly?! I mean after 15 minutes playing that part my right hand hurts like hell!!! And I feel it so cramped and stressed and tense! I wanna move it freely like she does.. T__T And besides, does this one need the pedal?

  • @love4nana707 if your hands are cramped stop playing and ask a piano teacher or search for proper wrist movement. you're hand shouldn't be that tense after 15 minutes. Your wrist is stationary most likely. YOU WILL GET TENDONITIS AND IT WILL HURT. I'm not joking stop playing and research proper technique. Tendonitis is very painful and it could ruin your aspirations for piano forever

  • @love4nana707 Hmmm the reason why it hurts is really because your muscles aren't used to the positions. When I learnt this piece years ago it was important to practice so that the muscles are used to odd positions (you can't disagree that there are some odd ones in there!) and also so that my finger muscles were strong enough to play the piece. We used a different book that was concentrated on doing this so ask around to see if you can find one.

  • @thepandali12345

Why it's an etude, I guess. Heh.

  • Wow, just listen to those notes 1:12 , a sublime sound, enchanting, simply magnificent.

  • What a wonderful touch you have here VL! The voicing here is very important, and as always, it's done flawlessly =) I've never heard such beautiful and natural phrasing such as this ^_^

  • Such music. I'm at a loss for words.

    walden32

  • Exelente. Solo faltó corpiño... ¬¬

  • I didn't know this was by Chopin, used to hear it all the time on a small keyboard when I was younger. She plays beautifully..

  • AWESOME..i only can ply half>< (slow speed)

  • A unique interpretation, mining some of the deep sonorities in this beautiful piece. I also felt she had a clear vision of how the whole Etude hangs together in it diverse parts, and the sinuous stroking action of her fingers on the keys and the flowing sound that produces made me think of Chopin's exhortation to his students that smoothness was everything. It's how it should be played - all other pianists listen!

  • I love the way this woman plays. You always can fall in love with a music like this. Thank you Frédérick to create this wonderful piece. Thank you Valentina to express the Chopin feelings with your nice touch.

  • you know, im writing a poem on music listening to this because it gives me the perfect words(; ahahahahha

  • Sublime.....pure beauty......romantic, sad, melancholic, but with promise, and ultimately, peace. Thanks. That's a beautiful rendition!!!

  • @carlfenger exactly!

  • I don´t like

  • @Frikinetto You don't understand

  • @Frikinetto, idiot!!!! how can you dislike this amazing piece

  • She is brimming with emotions

  • Simply fantastic!Nothing beats Chopin in my book! Thanks Valentina!

  • I love this piece, probably the only Chopin piece I can play well. Chopin is one of my favorite composers and Valentina is my all time favorite pianist. May the wind be always at your back.

  • "We may be sure that a genius like Mozart, were he born today, would write concertos like Chopin and not like Mozart." -Robert Schumann

  • i love this piece! even though im 13 im learning it, it looks easy the way she plays it but it so hard, there's like 3 voices and it will take atleast 1 year to learn it propery, its taking me 1 bar a day to learn but i have to say its truly worth it!

    p.s super preformance!

  • @Karol8910 keep at it!

  • Oddly enough, this piece doesn't send me, but then none of Chopin's works can make me bawl like Mozart does. Still great music though.

  • @8Ho03EdONl1liL Odd how that works considering Mozart composed works devoid of dynamics...but plenty of linear and bland patterns to go around.

  • When I die, I want this to be the last sound I hear. I think that's a pretty decent way to leave the world behind.

  • @amadeus5889

    me too !

  • wow, her hands move so beautifully; it's like she's stroking the piano keys. awesome performance.

  • Beautiful Interpretation! Excellent Technique! Subtle nuances and dynamics! Gorgeous separation and integration of the melodic line! What Chopin intended this Etude to sound like… Valentina is my musical hero :)

  • one bar of chopin equals total output from some other genres

  • So beautiful!

  • This proves people wrong when they say classical music is boring. I truly believe that this is Chopin's great great granddaughter.

  • @mrjwowza this isnt classical music... -_- its romantic music.

  • @adamdcFaN I like your thinking lol It really was written in the romantic era. However, the pen name for the song is titled "Tristesse" which translates to "sadness." So, can it also be melancholy music??

  • @mrjwowza Chopin never had children...

  • @Etudify Lol I know. He had a 10 year relationship with George Sands (woman's pen name) and George already had 2 children. I just really love Valentina's playing. I love to compare her to Chopin.

  • @mrjwowza :O Who says classical music is boring? Nowadays music has changed into a more consumerism kind of thing imo. There's a lot of business involved.

  • Gorgeous! Bravo to you, Valentina!

  • "In all my life I have never again been able to find such a beautiful melody" - Chopin

  • PLAYBAC

  • Ah, Slavic sensitivity all round, from composer to interpreter .. What more could Music ask for?

  • This is the great F. Chopin, and Valentina is with his soul... Love it!

  • actually i can play most of this but not this graceful...

  • You are awesome. Thanks

    Manuel

  • I was in music today and I sight read the theme of this from another kid's paper and freaked out :DD

  • Where is this pianist from? It sounds great! LOVE the Bosendorfer!!

  • @charlestonmusician I believe she is Ukrainian if that's what you were asking.

  • who tunes your Bosendorfer? the voicing is great, this piece brings tears to my eyes when you start the melody half way through. As a piano technician, I am a big fan of your stirring presentations.

  • I love Youtube, you can sit back, start watching a beautiful thing like this and then a great big ad to buy hair gel covers half the video. Content advertising eh?

  • thx valentina..this is one of the pieces that entered my heart just because it talks about my life..Its also one of the pieces that only humans can play it (those who have high senses).

And by the way Valentina Lisitsa could play this piece in a minute, but this piece is not about speed, its about a smile, love, sadness, war, anger, and relaxing!!!

  • ONE OF MY FAVORITESSSSSSSSSS yeahhhhhhhhhh awesome!!! :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • Is this woman for real ? She's beautiful, talented , classical, blonde ..everything God could bestow upon a human .. she can't be a real person .. I don't understand ..

  • @DabAndrew No she's not, she's an ALIEN!!! HAhahahah! and a blonde one too!

  • @DabAndrew Oh gosh, the blond part brought me back to the narrow-mindedness of some but, nevertheless, yes!

  • such a wonderfully soft touch for this touching etude!

  • God bless you, " Que Dios te bendiga"....please more videos , you are my beautiful virtual master, thank you....... =)

  • This is my favorite Chopin piece, and by far its best rendition I've heard so far... I could probably listen to this 100 times in a row..
