Someone probably already posted a comment similar to this but I'm too lazy to read ALL of them. That torture device that swings open is called an Iron Maiden. It was used in the Medeival/Renaissance era along with such items as the guillotine. The Iron Maiden has spikes in the back and doors and when a body was placed inside with closed doors... well that's self explanatory. The bull was also another ancient torture device.

you can also jump on the fallen pillar that crosses to the other side of the place., kind of like the bridge and if the thing is after you then let it fall to the ground. then you should be fine. there are two or three monsters in the red area.
