Glad you didn't need the surgery. A friend of mine had that surgery done and had nothing but regrets. When the same thing happened with his other knee he did exactly what you did. Once the inflammation subsided the area stopped producing fluid, same as what appears to have happened with your case.
@DiamantaireMarie Cool - nice to hear good stories. It's 3 years later since it healed up on its own, and i have not had any issues. I still answer a lot of questions though ;)
DEAR SIR, AM ABSOLUTELY STUNNED!!!! PL TAKE A CEPHALOSPORIN ANTIBIOTIC SUCH AS CEFOTOXIME OR CEFTAZIDIME A DOSE ONE DAY BEFORE THE SURGERY AND CONTINUE THE ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT AFTER THE DRAINING. YOU MUST DISINFECT THE AREA BEFORE PUNCTURING THE SKIN., OR ELSE IT MAY CAUSE SEVERE INFECTION OF JOINT AND THAT LEADS TO STILL WORSENED CONDITIONS. SO FOR SO GOOD. ALL TIMES WILL NOT BE THE SAME. BUT AM STUNNED THAT YOU HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT ANY KNOWLEDGE OF LIGAMENTS OR BURSA!!!U R SIMPLY TAKING RISK!
@NICOSIADON DUDE RELAX AND CALM DOWN, WHY YOU YELLING IN AN ALL CAPS RAGE ? LOL ! THIS WAS 3-4 YEARS AGO AND I'M FINE AND HAVE NOT HAD A SINGLE ISSUE IN OVER 3 YEARS NOW (OLD VIDEO) BUT THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN !! ;) HOPE YOUR DAY GETS BETTER - CHEERS !!!!!!!!!
Why should anyone be "grossed out"? That's ridiculous. If you were discovering your country 200 years ago the people who find a very simple procedure "gross" wouldn't have lasted five minutes! "Ooh no, I can't possibly cross the Mississippi - I've broken a fingernail!"
Thanks for a useful video - I've got to do this on myself soon. I fell over on some ice a few years ago and banged my knee really hard - it was miracle I didn't break it, and now I get this every couple of years.
Ow ow ow. I want to know how you did this without it hurting, because my doc drained my knee today and I thought I might cry, it hurt terribly. Hopefully he knew what he was doing and didn't injure my knee worse. :-P
@anniebhier Hold ice to the spot you plan on stabbing. That helps reduce pain. Also, a new sharp needle will go in like butter. The one i was using in the video got dinged and was a rather dull. Later on, i got a nice 18 gauge needle from a local nurse, and that made the drainings go a lot better. Went in easier, and no pain, even with no ice.
Man I know exactly how painful these things can be. I had water on the knee years ago back when I was around 17-18. Was staying at a friends house and woke up in the night with tremendous stiffness and pain in my knee, which was swollen like a small apple the next morning. Kinda weird seeing exactly what was in there now though. Honestly can't remember how they got rid of it though, just remember the intense pain. Braver man than I though for doing that. Can it really come back so frequently?
Although I was pretty grossed out, I have mad respect for you for going through this at home. It's the needle through the skin for so long that would have gotten me. ::shiver::
@jacebigelow i fell on my knee about a month ago.its swollen but doesn't hurt or bug me,the skin is all numb, would i have to have this done to my knee?
@leonscottkennedyre4 Yes, sounds like what happened to me. Does it feel like a pouch of fluid in there ? Many Dr's wont drain this out if it's not causing pain. I would not exactly recommend you try this at home, but I did what I had to do. I even had expensive X-Rays, paid the bill, and they STILL would not drain me. Can you say FRAUD ?! If you go see your PCP, he/she will most likely study it for a while, and then pass the buck to a sports injury specialist...
@jacebigelow sort of feels like a pouch of fluid, already had some x-rays done, now they say i need an MRI...i dont think i would try it at home until it starts to bug me.but im nervous having anything done to my knees as when i was younger i messed up a tendon real bad,i don't want to be crippled over a bad operation(happened to my uncle).
@leonscottkennedyre4 I did mine so that i could bend me knee without it feeling like an internal water balloon was going to pop. It's possible for it to heal on its own. I was told to stretch a tight knee bandage over it (from Dicks), and wear that. But that made it worse actually. It never went down on its own, till i started draining it. Eventually, it stopped filling up. Be careful. They say the knee is the most complex joint in the body. had a few friends warn me of infection and gangreen.
@jacebigelow for sure.mines not swollen to much, but then again i do have a big knee...if it gets worse ill go to a sports doctor and see what should be done, until then ill try a tight ace bandadge.
I have bursitis in my right shoulder. Fortunately, it's not swollen like your knee. I just had a steroid shot in it the other day. Any updates on your surgery?
@felisetopia All good. Let me copy and paste the info that is posted under the video: UPDATE: FEB 2009. My knee has healed itself and no longer fills up like this. It's like it never happened. I did not have to have surgery, and I never got an infection.
I had the same problem. It started as water on the knee and I had it drained at Md Gen Hosp in Baltimore. 3 days later I was so much pain I had to call an ambulance. They took me to Univ of Md and they told me I had a massive staph infection that spread to my femur. for 3 yrs I dealt with an infection that wouldnt go away and had numerous surgeries . i ended up having my leg amputated 10 inches above the knee. Be careful. Staph is no joke.
@Nikup33 I'm sorry to hear this :( Did the infection happen after the initial draining ? This is probly why the other Dr's would not touch mine - worried of infection. I was lucky and never had any infection. I never had to have surgery either. It stopped filling up on it's own, as if it healed itself. I'm considering putting an annotation disclaimer in this video, mentioning the warnings and amputation you had.
can you please explain w detail how to do this? i know there are posibilities of damaging the patella (kneecap) or other things in there so please explain so i can try and do this on my knee myself :) thank you
I did get a 20g needle and was able to drain about 25 to 30 ml of fluid out. Mine was very bloody. It looked like straight blood but I am sure it had some of the normal bursa fluid in it as well. I went right down like the other knee and feels great. I hope it will resolve on its own now. I will let you know. Thanks so much for your post.
@55Johnstone Excellent ! It may fill up again within a few days, just as mine did. I kept draining it (for personal relief) and eventually, one day, it never filled back up. I never ended up having surgery, and my knee is 100% fine - it's as if it never happened. Now I am more careful about the hard surfaces that i may have to put a knee on. Use knee protection, or a pillow, towels, pads, piece of carpet, or even cardboard (better than nothing) Good luck my friend. -Jace.
@55Johnstone Back when I was draining mine, some times it looked like weak apple juice, sometimes looked like water with a drop of blood mixed in, and other times it was darker, such as diluted cranberry juice.
I have the same problem after hitting my knee on the bottom of the swimming pool. I am a chiropractic doctor and we did blood draws in school. I would like to try this on my pre-patellar bursa. What size needle did you use?
@55Johnstone I started using nice sharp 18 and 20 gauge needles after this video. For some reason my needle was dull during filming. Sharp new ones go in like butter, with less pain. Dull ones hurt !!! Good luck, it's easy. -Jace
Hey Dr. Bigelow, you're an M.D.? Regardless, I am fascinated at your self attempt and success at draining your knee. What a fine technique, slow and careful. I had my knee drained almost 2 years ago and it was the size of a cantaloupe (had an ACL tear years ago).
Physician heal thyself? How often did you have to do this? Successful surgery? Post-op? At least the fluid looked nice and clear, but did you culture it by any chance? Brave man! :)
@Blackhawkflygirl Never needed to have surgery - it stopped filling up after a while. Have not had to drain it in over 1.5 years. Never ran a culture on the synovial fluid - didn't think it was a bacterial infection - the knee never gave off any heat.
@55Johnstone I started using nice sharp 18 and 20 gauge needles after this video. For some reason my needle was dull during filming. Sharp new ones go in like butter, with less pain. Dull ones hurt !!! Good luck, it's easy. -Jace
Good job. I never thought about it to do myself. So far my doctor did it over 200 times in about 30 years. But if I can do it myself saves me soooo much waisted time. Thanks for sharing this vid.
Man, I wish mine would just heal itself. Mines above the knee on both knees (arthritis). I'm only 24, and they're HUGE. I've had them drained at the doctors a few times but it just consistently comes back, and I'm a total wimp haha, I hate the needle. But sometimes it's really bad, and I have trouble walking properly. It's mostly painless, just really stiff. Maybe I'll be less nervous with draining if I do it to myself, but then I worry about infection. Being a hypochondriac doesn't help :p
@lowell191 Thank you for the positive comments, and I hope your knee is as trouble free as mine is. Never again will i put my knee down on a bare floor. Even a towel or corrugated cardboard is better than nothing.
I'll be honest with you brother, you're a brave guy. I just had the surgery you're talking about a week ago, but it's already back. The fluid completely filled up the void they removed in the surgery. Anyway, the only comment I wanted to make was you shouldn't blow on it. Let the alcohol evaporate, when you blow, you're blowing all the germs, etc. Anyway, that's an awesome video, and thanks for doing it!!
@bigmikedeals Oh no, sorry to hear that it's filled back up again but that is common after surgery. Your Dr may want to drain it, and inject steroid meds. Will you have it drained out again ? All i did to my knee was keep draining it every few days for a period of about 9 months until it stopped filling up. It cured itself. Never injected cortisone or any meds. Just drained, and took it easy on that knee. Avoided kneeling on it, etc. Still to this day, I go easy on it.
Seeing proper surgery and blood make me feel like vomiting yet for some reason this doesn't bother me at all, more interesting than disgusting honestly. What's really annoying though is all the thumbnails for videos of people lancing spider bites and draining abscesses to the right in the related videos section.
@HiTEqMETHOD Thank you. I tried to do a quick straight forward, educational video. My only fail was that my needle was dull for some reason. Sharp needles go right in like butter, and less pain actually. Luckily i dont have to perform this anymore.... been well over a year. Cheers :)
Dude me and some friends Voted dislike cuz you left the needel in.. You were worried about messing up you tendence in your knee but yet you left the needel in and were moving it... That could possibly mess it up still.. It was kool then not..
@Mackala2010 The more times you pull a needle in and out, the greater chance of infection. It is proper procedure to leave it in while draining the syringe. Sorry you disliked the video.
@jacebigelow Correct about leaving the needle in. However, you should use 70% ethanol instead of 91%. At concentrations above 70%, bacteria tend to shrivel up but not die. When the alcohol evaporates, they resume their activities. You're not immunocompromised and it is a very small wound, so this is a VERY minor concern, but 70% is correct medical procedure.
I hope you get better, and your knee heals up so you dont have to do surgery on it...thanks for sharing this video with us..maybe some people can you this technique.
I have water on the side of my knee and I'm wondering if I can do the same thing your doing. it dose not get as big as all the other knee draining ones i see. and I don't know if you know but my knee pops and hurts if I move it a certin way, do you know why it would do this?cant go to the ER so if you can answer any of my question ty
Ahha. if santa ever replies, I will give you 25$ (CAD)Canadian, to drink the liquid. It really wont be worth it but hey, they you will know it doesn't stink, AND AND, you will know the taste. (please don't ever do that, haha, but if you do, well, the offer's out their xD)
0.0 My father needed to have fluid drained from his knee because of arthritic gout, the pain was sooooo bad! You said that it doesn't hurt you too much to do that, and that's awesome! But when I saw this, it reminded me of my father screaming from them putting the needle into the knee; it doesn't help that i have fibromyalgia/arthromyalgia, lol. Congrats on having it heal well. :)
LOL - Thank You for the comment ! :) I take pride in my work and i have always believed that if you want something done right, do it yourself. The knee thing was a 9-month "thorn in my side" but luckily i have not had to do this in over a year, knee is 100%, and you'd never know it ever had a problem. I was lucky.
Gotta love water on the knee. Back in high school a buddy of mine on the football team had this and I drained his knee for him every couple of days since he couldn't stand needles.
Glad you didn't need the surgery. A friend of mine had that surgery done and had nothing but regrets. When the same thing happened with his other knee he did exactly what you did. Once the inflammation subsided the area stopped producing fluid, same as what appears to have happened with your case.

Cheers :)

kingodz24 1 year ago
Dude me and some friends Voted dislike cuz you left the needel in.. You were worried about messing up you tendence in your knee but yet you left the needel in and were moving it... That could possibly mess it up still.. It was kool then not..
Mackala2010 1 year ago
@Mackala2010 The more times you pull a needle in and out, the greater chance of infection. It is proper procedure to leave it in while draining the syringe. Sorry you disliked the video.
jacebigelow 1 year ago
@jacebigelow Just dont like how people take it into their own hands.. Hope your knee is better.. Sorry if i was harsh.. Later
Mackala2010 1 year ago
@jacebigelow Correct about leaving the needle in. However, you should use 70% ethanol instead of 91%. At concentrations above 70%, bacteria tend to shrivel up but not die. When the alcohol evaporates, they resume their activities. You're not immunocompromised and it is a very small wound, so this is a VERY minor concern, but 70% is correct medical procedure.

What causes water on the knee?
watchensee 1 year ago
Stress, strain, trauma, damage, injury. It's the knee making more fluid than normal.

Intelligent life on YouTube! Nice job for a do-it-yourself surgery. Glad you managed to escape infection and surgery.

I was lucky.
jacebigelow 2 years ago
ur so lucky to not get an infection from such ''injury''
but its jsut the way you heal your wound, as you put on a bandaid

Gotta love water on the knee. Back in high school a buddy of mine on the football team had this and I drained his knee for him every couple of days since he couldn't stand needles.
