yeah i also had a question on the sand in your tank
do the turtles often kick the sand up n make the tank cloudy?
also how do ur filters stand up to the sand?
does the sand get in?
and finally on cleaning the sand.. i was thinking u can use those sucking devices like when cleaning gravel or removing water, but i think the sand would get pulled all the way through being so fine.
Or do u simply remove the sand and replase it with new every cleaning?
The turtles do occasionally kick up the sand. But they settle down pretty fast. Sand is, after all, heavier than water. Little amount of sand does get into the filter but it hasn't caused any problem for me at all. I don't actually clean the sand. I use the siphon to just suck off the debris off the surface.
oohhh! well... he did eat a grasshopper and not a cricket the next day so i guess he is a pretty picky eater! and thanx! and should i be worried if there is white lines between each shell plate (hexagons on the top of his shell)?
I don't know about these white lines...you probably want to read about some turtle shell diseases on the net to see if it's something you need to worry about.
Is he still eating the krills though? If so, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. He may just be a picky eater, as most newly caught and baby turtles are.
plz i am just a begginer on turtle caring so i don't really know how far up i should fill the tank oh! and i measured him and he is 1 inch by 1 inch. so how far should i fill my 10 gallon tank? plz help me thank you
Your painted turtle is a natural swimmer. Fill your tank high enough for it to swim but not high enough for it to escape. It will out grow your 10 gallon tank soon so be prepared to upgrade or release it back where you caught it now. Once it is domesticated, it won't be able to survive in the wild. It loves krills but you should mix some vegetable (fresh or pellets) in its diet.
nice tank and turtles and fish! but i need some advice on how to take care of a turtle b/c i caught a painted turtle and he looks about 2 weeks old so how do i take care of him? i had him for exacly 1 week. i caught him when i was camping and i'm feeding him REPOMIN right now and he seems to like the mini krill so is there anyhting else u think he might like? and how much should i fill the tank with water?
i feel like i am feeding my turtles too much or too little because alot of times they would swim crazily up against the glass looking at me, even after i just fed them alot of pellets.
mgs937, I feed them primarily Hikari's turtle stick. Probably about 10 sticks each every other day. I supplement it with some fresh vegetable each week. Your turtles will always be begging for food. Don't over feed them. You know you are over feeding them (as I had) if their shells are beginning to form like a pyramid--the shell should be flat. If that happens, then they are experiencing over growth. Also check the neck and legs for signs of excessive fat build up.
What kind of filter do you use, how often do you clean it, and how do you take care of it (do you manually clean it or buy new cartridges or what)?

And also i reccomend some egg shells for shell calcium. but they are quite hard to get out of the cage if they get smashed really small.
