  • what really sucks is that those people watching the explosion had no idea what movie it was for until they saw it for themselves once the movie came out, ha ha

  • 0:01

  • @BadHistoryDays ??? the scene was filmed on 8/29/07. Heath Ledger did pass away until 1/22/08. So why are you saying that he is dead!?

  • heath was alredy dead by this scene

  • @BadHistoryDays

oh... do you see the movie, i think not. He is the last to run away from the implosion.

  • @BadHistoryDays Now I know why you call yourself "BadHistoryDays".

  • @BadHistoryDays

He didn't die until January 22 2008, and this was filmed a few months before that.

  • im guessing the 2 dis likes were people inside the explosions, center LOL.

  • @darthcerda121498 dude so did my cousin

  • its pretty cool to imagine heath ledger playing the joker disguised as a nurse is right there hitting that detonator getting in a bus and so on. llolz!

  • Better upload this someplace else -- it's a good tape, but it's going to be flagged sooner or later and get taken down. You watch.

  • O_O

Hope no one was in there :P

  • Yeaaaaaaa Explosions!!!!!

  • im sure all of u hav seen the movie but notice when the explosions stop for i dunno like 30 secs thats wen heath is like hitting the detanator and hes like wat the hell?!

  • Very good!

  • Possibly the COOLEST SHIT I'VE EVER SEEN.

That would be so TIGHT to be there as it happened. I mean.....to witness history in the making....

Question though......Considering the danger of the explosion, that's crazy if everyone on set was as close as it seems in the movie. The flying debris is basically what I'm referring to.....That stuff is deadly.

  • Hmm. I could've sworn it sounded 10x more explosive in the video. I wonder how they did that.

  • did they really blow that hopital up?

  • it wasnt really a hospital, it was an old candy factory that was set for demolition anyways, so they used it for the filming

  • this doesnt look like the explosion in the movie...???

  • because it's taken from a different angle

  • lol duh, its a some one filming it with a personal camera at a far distance..lol smart one..

  • It doesn't have the special effects added to the explosion. Plus it wasn't recorded with the same type of camera as the actual crew has

  • I heard they left a live duck inside the building and after the explosion they ate it.

  • I heard this too

  • How they just let Heath walk out of the building? In the scene you can see all those rocks and other stuff flying it's a miracle that none of them nocked him out! :D No seriously, there must be some kind of thing they used to make the situation completely safe i'm just interested how.

  • Mostly a matter of focal length and timing.

The shot of Ledger walking away from the hospital is done with a flat focal length that makes him look closer to the building.

There is a cut-away where he moves much closer to the camera, but he still looks like he hasn't left the area near the doors (he's really about 150 ft. away) before the pyrotechnics go off. He's in the bus before the demo charges blow.

  • they shot him walking away and the explosion separate and added them together

  • No they didn't. Look at some amateur clips like these from a higher angle and you'll Heath walking out in front.

  • and the concrete flying out of the building is made of cork....well most of it anyway

  • That's awesome and you can tell the exact point in which he pushed the button again before it blew up again. haha! Then he jumps in the back of the bus.

  • mother earth must not be happy with this

  • goddam hippies......

  • LOL.

Heath Ledger wasn't on green screen.

He was there filming the scene as it happened.

    Dangerous but awesome.

  • yea ,look for the other video, where its WAY closer and in The front of the building,YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THE BUS SPEEDING BY,THAT HE WAS ON.I JIZZED MYSELF

  • Thats the austin hood, and its on cicero

  • that cicero ave at lake street..

  • Wow the Producers really wanted this mive to be fucin realstic''

    lol XD

  • Iraq gets to see that shit every day

  • sound is fucked up

  • i should imagine that Heath Ledger wasn't there as it would be dangerous for him to be in and amongst the explosions, so they prob had numerous cameras in and amongst and then probs green/blue screen him in to the video, it's not a fact or anything it's just what im presuming.

  • No, Ledger was actually there on-scene.

There was no green screen used to insert him into the action. It's amusing to me that people find that hard to accept.

  • HOLY FUCK I am so glad to have found this video.

That scene was jaw-dropping in the movie.

  • y asi se destruye la tierra :/

  • y eso k? uno se muere y todo e keda so fuck it

  • isn't heath ledger supposed to be there, in the movie he tries to blow it once but fails then he presses the button again and it blows up.

My question is was heath ledger there, and was he walking out of the hospital when this was filmed ?

  • ya it was probably a bit hard to glue the building back together again for the scene with ledger...

  • I bet when it comes out on Blu-ray you might be able to tell if he was on a green-screen.

  • That's an odd thing to claim.

I was there. The structure came down.

You see it fall in the video.

    This was not "Sparta"

  • omg that's so cool. i wish i lived in chicago now so i could've seen all that. haha

  • thats sooooooo cool they had to make everything perfect for that shot cause they can only blow up that once :-)

  • AWW UR SO FREAKIN LUCKY I WISH I WERE THER =[ thts so cool and the joker was still alive then =[

  • Can you imagine walking outside to see that without knowing whats going on lol :D

  • thats awesome...i loved that movie...theres actually a "Gotham General Hospital" ambulance parked in a storage yard about 4 blocks from my house...im gonna see if i can buy it for scrape price...ill even settle for like 4,000

  • Is the ambulance still there?

  • yeah, its been there since like a week after the movie debuted, its still there, along with the swat truck

  • Kewl! I'll keep an eye out for it. Where at?

  • off of Cass street across the street from a cemetery, west of Briggs street in joliet Illinois

  • how cheap! ^^ Not

  • kapoooooo

  • omg they seriously blew up a building..

  • they built a big set but the buildings not legit, then they prob edited it with computers cause that didnt have any windows or anything

  • it was actually a building, and old factory thats on cicero ave at lake street west side chicago.. every time i drive by that building I get chills because now it is abandoned . its like a cementery. knowing thay heath was there.. I upload a video of how the building looks now all deserted.. I live around there so I seet almost every day

  • No, they really blew up a building. It was an old Brach's factory.

  • that is so cool

  • very good movie

  • X]

    1. Heath on the toher side, dressed as the joker, who's dressed as a nurse.

    2. I love the fact everyone loves to watch big explosions XX333

  • It's so cool to imagine Heath just on the other side of that.

  • yeah it is. i agree.

  • that is fucking awesome. i cant believe they actually blew up an entire building for that scene. lol what if heath had messed up or something and they had to refilm it

  • but Heath wouldn't ;-)

  • where the joker

  • It was so funny when the Joker was walking out of the hospital in the nurses' outfit with all the explosions behind him. :)

  • when i saw that, i just imagined heath on the other side of the building in the nurses outfit smacking the detonator. haha, that was so cool.

  • lol yeah, i would have snuck around to the other side of the building to watch him dressed up like that, and beating up the detonator! XD would have made my life!

  • Don't you know it!

    Unfortunately (or fortunately) for me,

there was more than enough of Chicago's

Finest (CPD) and Bravest (CFD) to keep me away

from getting close enough to be singed.

I was over 700 yrds away and the heat wave was tremendous...Heath Ledger was only at about 200 yrds at best when that thing went up!

    ...AND THEN CAME DOWN!

  • whoa.... dude. now that i think about it, he probably got burned. ouch! wish i could have seen a tiny bit of them filming TDK, that would have been incredible! you're so lucky! and you got to see them film one of the coolest scenes!

  • DAYUM!!that was wicked AWESOME! :)

  • I thought that was the funniest Joker moment; when he's can't get the detonator to work, so he smacks it and it finally blows up and he jumps a little bit. I thought that was pretty funny.

  • lol, i love that guy who just screams, "YEEEESSSS!" when the building blows up. kinda creepy that he got such enjoyment out of that.

  • Omg, was awsome to see this, although if you had caught Heath in that film, I would have bowed down lol but like that would happen but still, it's hard to imagine he's on the other side of that building as your filming.

  • My dad used to work there back when it was a candy factory

  • Thats sooooo cool, I wish I was there to see it. ^^ lucky

  • this is hollywood movie =D

  • I heard the detonator actually wasn't working and heath just played along?

  • Did they film Heath walking out of the building at the same time they blew it up or did they film Heath seperately?

  • It was one shot, he was there through it all!

In the film you can see him exiting (in the nurses' uniform) through the "Hospital" doors as the pyrotechnic charges begin.

There is a brief cut-away in the movie at this point to the reporter getting into a bus, this is while Ledger is moving towards the cameras and away from the building.

Then he does the shtick with the detonator during the pause in the explosions. The actual demolition and gasoline charges go off as he's ducking into a bus.

  • if Heath farted, they need to build another one to blow up again

  • of course, the building is gone, they didn't rebuild it to shoot ledgers segment, they had several different cameras filming in different angles filming at the same time. i wasn't even there and i know this, that's how they film

  • so bad for the earth. but i LOVED batman!!

  • this is one of my favorite sceanes in the movie

  • the pause between the small explosions, the big explosion was when joker was like wtf with the detonator, right?

  • do you know if the pause was planned?

  • brachs has great bridge mix...haha...but i loved this part when he couldnt get the clicker to work and just kinda stared at the building...hahaha.

  • Wasn't a stunt guy killed during that filming?

  • Not in Chicago, and not at this demolition.

While planning a stunt with the Batmobile in a special effects facility near Chertsey, England in September 2007, technician Conway Wickliffe was killed when his car crashed.

  • Ah I see. Thanks for the info!

  • where'd did u get ur info from?

  • i love this movie it is great

  • hilarious!!!

  • HA=HA=HA this was one of my favorite scenes in the movie too..RIP Heath..you did a fantastic job...and by the way..never did like brachs candy..lmao

  • SWEET I LOVED THE MOVIE

  • 30,000 views today!

    Thanx everyone!

Be sure to watch the re-edited version in better definition and SLOW-MOTION here: watch?v=GYs7fYVhVdM

  • That would have been hilarious to hear the audience during the actual scene in the movie.

Just think about the context, then imagine laughter and cheering.

  • Ahahah i noe it would have

  • o shit, i thought it was cgi. fuck

  • the directer doesn't like to use cgi, so almost everything in the movie isn't, like the 18-wheeler being flipped was real

  • I dig the reactions from the crowd.

  • it was Brach's Candy Factory in Chicago...my Cousin used to work there.

  • shit that was cool.

  • Amazing!

  • ** SPOILER ALERT **

Heath Ledger was actually in MORTAL DANGER during the shooting of this scene:

Ledger (as Joker) walks out of the NE door of the building and stands in the open as the primary pyrotechnics are ignited. As he fiddles with the 'detonator' in his hand, the actual first demolition charges explode and the walkway behind him begins to fall.

Seconds later, the corner of the building Ledger has just walked out of is blown out by the demo charges and collapses!!!

    Muy Huevos Grande!

  • Wasn't there a second explosion when he bashes the button?

  • did theuy shoot bazooka?!

  • Kinda heartless to blow up a hospital. Even in a movie :( I hate that Ledger's death happened in this movie. No offense meant to him, he's a great actor, but I think his death is what spurred so many people to say the movie was phenominal. I mean, nobody would want his last role to have 'sucked,' would they? That's why I'm going to Dark Knight with an unbiased attitude. But still, RIP Heath.

  • It's not just sentimental. I just saw the movie and thought Ledger did a phenomenal job. But thanks for the comment, all the same.

Great to see how this scene turned out.

  • Yeah. Just saw Dark Knight. Ledger did great. Oscar worthy? Probably. But yeah, this movie is one of the best this summer. I loved it! Each time Joker popped up gave me chills and made me laugh at the same time.

  • SPOLIER TRY NOT TO READ:

haha this was my favorite scene very well done especially how the joker was dressed up as a nurse for this and after he came down the stairs he frustrated on pushing the detonator I really enjoyed this scene it had some of the joker yet not joker humor in it I just enjoyed it

  • It wasn't really a hospital. It was a candy factory. The Brach Candy factory. Still gotta admit the Joker was amazing. My mom didn't even know that Heath was the Joker until I told her after the movie. She said that he was the best Joker in her opinion.

  • i just saw it and it blew my mind! i never seen any of heath ledger's films before and im just amazed of how awesome of job he did as the joker

  • It wasn't a hospital, it was a candy factory.

  • It wasn't a hospital, it was a candy factory.

  • First of all, he didnt die IN THE MOVIE. and second of all the "gotham city hospital" wasnt a real hospital. it was a candy factory! way to go though.

  • did they destroy the entire factory or just that portion of it.

  • part of it

  • Maybe they're saving the rest of the plant for the next one!

  • i think they already demolished the rest

  • oh, this is for the movie?

  • oh my god........this film is going to be awesome, Heath Ledger should get an oscar for this, and if he doesn't...i will shoot myself......thank god for Christopher Nolan......R.I.P Heath Ledger

  • wow!

its so crazy how they do all that effect stuff!

    cant wait for the movie!

  • So sorry to hear the shocking news about Heath Ledger. My sincere condolences to his family and friends...and to all his fans. All reports were that he enjoyed his time in Chicago during filming and made many, many friends here.

  • haha im expecting this to be an exciting movie!

no doubt everyone will see it especially cause of heath ledgers death :( RIP, how exciting for all those people living right near the filming !

  • Exciting for the moment, maybe...but in general the neighbors weren't all that thrilled.

This took place in a depressed area of Chicago's racially segregated West Side.

While I waited neighbors complained to me that the people who came into their neighborhood to stage this stunt never offered jobs or bought local food or other services in the area.

  • That is sooo fuckin' awesome!!

  • bad batman... LOL

  • Man, that was beautiful. Welp, better head on home. Let's see, where'd I park, where'd I park ....

    Oh .... OH NO!!!!!
