aha!!! where in the score does it say to start off piano? this is one of the most boring versions I've ever heard .... HORRIBLE ... never thought that a piece like that could sound so boring ..... and .... ahm ... I disagree .... this choic sounds like a russian-pimp-choir ... no grace or anything that piece stands for ... sorry, but this version should simply be erased from youtube ....!!!!!!!!
@warrockneurd : its not so much about hatred my friend. Its just about whether you understand this divine but complex music or not. And unfortunately you dont ;)
@Andreios2000 I really have no clue on what you replayed this message. But anyway, dont worry, I understand this music as far as s.o. can understand it at all. Cheers.
it is interesting to compare the same music (but in different text) from the Gloria. The difference between them definitly is the result of the theology. In the Dona Nobis Pacem, it is from the tranquility and silence the music gradually develop into the highest zenith of the heaven.
Nicely put, mingwei. I agree, the Dona Nobis has such different musical layers than the Gratias Agimus Tibi. Maybe because Richter uses much more ritenuto's in the Dona Nobis, it's climaxing to the end in utter tranquility and spirit.
Es maravilloso escuchar como el coro dirigido por Karl Richter, deja las notas como flotando y el metal se encuentra comedido,en honor al fraseo tan excelso.
paradoxicus: my Spanish is not that well but if you mean to say this is the most magnificent Bach conductor ever I agree fully. This piece is just heaven and gives meaning to life.
Just so you know, even atheists(like myself)still have a "soul"--This is one of my favorite choral rounds ever. I heard this for the first time when we were practicing singing in the round for band. Yes - I was singing in band, but only for tonality and ensemble practice. Still regarded as one of my favorites.
me too. I"m agnostic and I still felt something stir in me while I sang this last year in my all-region choir. alas, I didn't make it into all-state, but I'm trying again this year :)
i'm glad my way to God is your way too, but let's admit that there are as many ways as many kinds of men He has created. the endpoint is the same, though!
I sang this as part of the 2009 Texas All-State Mixed Choir and I must say that this is such a moving oiece! When you paint the music with such beauty and grace, you get chills! I loved performing this! This Choir is really good and the Cathedral that the Mass was performed in is a beauty house of the Lord! Bach is truly a person that can make one understand and Believe in God Almighty!!!
Which is the most ridiculous "non sequitur" statement, and therefore doesn't prove a single thing other than this is great music, much greater, enjoyable, tangible, beautiful, sincere and true than the doctrine which inspired it.
I'm 51 years old now, have been a Bach lover since my teens. Certain pieces of his "get me" and cause tears to well up and this one does. That the music is the same as the Gratias Agimus is cetainly no accident by Bach, it links the ideas of peace, gratitude, and glory to God in a deep, profound, powerful way. I'm also certain I viewed this entire performance of the B Minor on American Public TV in the early-mid 70's. Thank You Bacholoji!
Hermoso.

Interesting how the tempo is drawn out/broadened at about 2:40! That's probably the best thing I liked about this recording.

I fully agree, it's insulting to Bach and Richter as well. It sure has to do with money - less time on the tv screen.

Some theologians regard the B Minor Mass of Bach as a 5th proof for the existence of God. Risteard.

And there's also the famous saying, "there exists the icon of the Trinity by St. Andrei Rublev. Therefore God exists". :)

Bach's music is beyond Catholicism and protestantism. It's human and divine.
In my humble opinion,(even though we shouldn't be comparing composers) his music is often deeper and more thought-through than Mozart's.
