  • Two to five dollars: Reasonable tip.

  • It really irritates me the way the schooling system doesn't teach much arithmetic. I think there needs to be more focus on just doing arithmetic - none of this crap about doing it in the context of other topics (which I think is a bigger problem in science), not just because it's very important to everyday life, but it's also very important as a foundation for studying mathematics.

  • math just pisses me off..fuck it

  • Good thing you don't have to balance your checkbook or estimate how much money you will need for gas, or to figure out how much money you will make in a year...

  • This was where my school let me down. I thought arithmetic mas a myth invented to scare children. Then some years later I found out it was real and superior to mathematics in every day life. The education system needs sorting out!

  • I have totally been trying to make sure my children know there change because I have noticed that the school system has stopped teaching that for the most part... they are now just integrating in into the mathmatics. And pretty much just doing it for as little time as possible. Its sad

  • Lemonette, I admit I cannot do the 15% in my head! I can do the 20%, I've yet to receive service deserving of that high of a tip though! My mother always fascinated me how she would make change: I could never do it correctly. I should be practicing! Thanks again for the entertainment!

    Love to you,

    Stefan from Kentucky

  • Stephan,

To figure 15%, just find 10% and then half of the 10% to it. For example, if the check is $12.00, then 10% is $1.20 and half of that (5%) is $ .60, so a 15% tip would be $1.80. Hope that helps!

  • Lemonette, I know exactly what you mean about being able to make change! I don't think that 99.9% of the people operating cash registers know anymore. They all wait for their cash register (computer) to tell them! The owner of a small family owned dairy store near me (in CT) requires his employees (mostly high school kids) to count back change to the customers! I think it's great, and have told him so. It's the only place I can think of locally where they do it. BTW, LOVE your videos!

  • Wait. ENGLISH is the subject you should be talking about. Remember, you got your nails "did". tsk, tsk, tsk.

  • lol now that you talk about it, i wouldn't easily be able to make change, especially exact change. I've always been horrible with adding and subbing. Like 5 + 7 boggles my mind half the time and i have to use muh fangers. With that said, i can easily find the square root of just about any number in my head (any reasonable number anyway). And just think, i'm going to be a math teacher lol. x_x

  • if I take my shoes off

  • i luv ur videos

  • ooooooo who drive and car and looks like a mole lemonette she never walks and live on the dole lemonette , lemonette lemonette lemon etteeeeeeee (this was completely random)

  • no shit

  • math was my worse subject.but I made aaa's and bees in everything else i want to bleach my hair that will be a change.:O)

  • Lemonette!

I just came across your channel a little while ago while looking at Sign543's video where he mentioned Lemonette and I checked you out and I have to say I Adore your videos! I am slowly watching all of them and I love them!! You are such a kind hearted and have a warm presence about you it's amazing.

I am looking foward to your next video!

    You ROCK!

    =^)

  • Lemonette, you are expontentially my favorite YouTube star!

  • I thought this was either a video on attitutes behaviors or clothes and then I thought I hope this is not about diapers. :)

  • Yes I am old enough to have had arithmetic and am happy to say I can make change for a dollar and tip appropriately without a calculator. Thanks for sharing.

  • nice video i agree

  • Hey Lemonette! I got a new channel!

    Brandie

  • lemonette you are the best...= )....all my other profiles i subsricbed to are not even half as talented as you are

  • I enjoy all of your videos, they are good clean fun/interesting. Very good point made on this subject.

    TEAMWHITTINGTON

  • I can change with the best of em, thanks lemonette.

  • First of all, let me say, Lemonette, how much I enjoy you. Your comforting voice and manner is wonderful! Thank you for sharing your "gift of gab" with the rest of us "gabbers"...he he he!!

And, you're right...arithmetic is very different than math. I've never been good at math but I sure can change and tip!

Unfortunately, most things taught in school is not helpful in real life. We need to get to the basics...balancing a checkbook, learning to buy a house, fill out a job app, etc.

  • LEMONETTE! hi this is sydney and margo! we watch your videos everyday, and we love them! they are so entertaining and you are so smart! we'd really like to be a shout out in one of your video's! we'd be so excited. we are such big fans! we'll give you a special shout out in our first video! well, your really great lemonette, and believe it or not. you have actually taught me alot of values and morals in life! and your very funny too! much love, margo and sydney! • You know Lemonette, I really like these vidoes and you are so right. I was only taught basic math.. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Now a days the kids come home and it is math I know nothing about. I was not required to take geometry and algebra and pre algebra. So I never learned it. Now days it is so different. I am learning algebra so I can help my son get through it. I think you have achieved celebrity status on here.

  • I can change that dollar from your hand to mine!! :-)

  • I know how, but I don't feel that I need to change for some other person's desire. If someone tries to change me, I stand them on their head...

  • Excellent commentary! It bothers me when a store clerk is so ignorant that he or she cannot figure out how much change to give me after a purchase has been made.

  • Ya I can Change. if can do it with money from 150 years ago.

  • Sorry lemonette... But your calculations are wrong.... 2 Lemons + 1 Glass or water + 3 cups (Sometimes 16...) = Lemonade!!!!

    Lol...

  • I HATE MATH!

  • Hey can you cosign on a loan for me? +-%=

  • Yep, I CAN change!! And tip (according to the quality of service)in my head. lol I don't need them to count my change back to me, cause, I'm ocd about that and I count it as they are taking it from the drawer.

The other day I was at the grocery, my bill was $199 and change, she rang my payment as $20.00, instead of $200.00, and she had to call a mgr to help her figure it. I couldn't believe it. I told her what she owed me, and how to fix it, but she was totally confused...sigh..very sad!

  • I can change! I can change in 3 languages!!!

However, I can't sine or cosine! lol

  • I remember in high school bringing that up with one of my teachers. I told them, (while I was failing the class of course) the only time we will use any of this is if were going to be a math teacher! Love you'ns

  • oh Lanette you are getting too technical lol, I knew arithmetic before Kindergarten!

  • nice twist. I was all ready to make a vid response about people I know who've changed, then I watched the vid and got a nice surprise. lol

    clever double entendre

  • it is very sad when i go to the grocery store and the girl can not figure out how much i get back from the money i give her, and she closes her draw to early. they call for the manager, to figure out how much to give me. she can not do it in her head.

    **KISSES**

  • LOL...so true Lemonette I can change working retail for years...lol

Kids now a days can`t tell time on a regular "Old Timey" watch with the hands since the digital age...

  • Lemonette, you're wonderful! What a can of worms, eh? The comments really surprise me, I guess it's been so long since I've had much to do with the school system I had no idea kids are no longer learning the basics. Remember when we jokingly called the basics,"The Three 'R's, Readin', Ritin', and Rithmatic?" LOL

  • When I started school in the 50s, we learned how to do it. Now my grandchildren have NO idea what or how to do it. Recently at a McDonalds drive thru, the girl said the computer was down so she had to wait to give me change. I made her count it out to me the way we would. She was sooo confused but amazed it could be done that way. Eileen

  • I remember those days. Good vlog.

  • simple but also complicated thought that does relate to the other change. lately I've been thinking about the election and whether racism a complicated math, will win or arthmetic will prevail. wish I could spell too

  • i too can take numbers off of numbers and times by two :) me special ^_^

  • Long story short-- was at a register when the power went out but the drawer was open. I had 1 item less than $5. I had $5 bill. She couldn't do the math & she had a pencil & paper. I was shocked...

  • AMEN! I can so make change! You bring up a good point about "the olden days"! My son is in 2nd. grade, they use a CALCULATOR to "help" them with their "MATH"! They want all children to "feel good" about themselves! At home when we do homework IT IS W/O the calculator! I want...NO I demand that MY CHILD learn how to count, add, subtract etc.... What tha hell-o is our education system coming too? Sorry just had to vent! LOL Thanks for this video!!!

    Lisa

  • My then 10 year old son had a coupon for 20% off a toy. When he got to the store the gal couldn't understand how to do the math. He tried to explain it to her three times, then finally gave up. He walked out of there with the toy for 20%. That's 80% off! She was a young woman who had no understanding of how to use arithmetic! That's where math comes in. Today we have electronic bar codes to protect stores from math-challenged employees.

  • The wisdom of life as told by Lemmonette, i love these videos

  • At first i thought it ment "change" as in an attitude or change your life. , sometimes the title is missleading, but i loved the vid all the same :) x

  • love the video....:)

  • "Them little tiny numbers up there at the top corner of your regular number..." They're called exponents! Lol! Great video, Lemonette! I love listening about what you have to say!

  • expotentials, I NEARLY died. (it is exponentials). just for clarification, architects rarely use mathmatics. just so you know, i have spent 7 years in architectural school and used very little above geometry mathmatics. loved this video though, it amazes me how incompetent some people are when in comes to simple adding and subtracting. and some people are completely thrown off if you ask them to do percentages.

  • I don't remember them being called different names like arithmetic and math. I definitely remember being taught basic "math" of addition, subtraction, then multiplication and division. And yes, I can make change =)

BTW, I attached a vid response. I made it a while back. It's about people changing.

  • I am really bad at math, but I can surely change. No one is gonna gyp me out of my change.

  • I can change.. I had arithmetic in school!! Kids today need a calculator for everything!

  • MIKMA + WAS = HERE

  • LOL

  • Ive always been a math geek... loved it. =)

  • This all makes perfect cents.

  • PIE aren't square .. its round

    (Hope that doesn't change)

..and thats my 2 cents worth.

    Nota

  • Good to see you.

    Yes you can change.

  • I have a tip calculator on my cell phone. I can adjust the percent of the tip. I just say keep the change or give them a dollar fifty or so or 2 dollars. We don't go out to eat at a sit down restaurant and have a meal that often. Just a piece of pie and coffee or hot chocolate.

I know I have been to several yard sales where the person running the yard sale acts very unprofessional when handling money. That is why crooks go to yard sales. Anyway they are bad with giving change back.

  • Your wonderful -- I had all of the psych positons why core personalities could not change but attibutes could LOL - and then you said arithmetic -I am also like you learned well years of arithmetic and pity those who have not had the expirience of the drills the long division and addition columns the divison problems and recalc of percentages and fractions -- with the teacher standing over you with a sharp ruler --sigh -

The good old days - that never were LOL

    Marc in NYC

  • High School...four years of college..and I still have to think when it comes to tip percents. I hate math though and did what I needed to.. to get by. This is why I am now in television and not an architect. :P

  • Brillant!!!!

  • The world according to Lemonette + videocam = a smile on my face

  • :) agree (:

  • I can change! I dont often.. but I can.. I think

  • In some retail settings, usually fast food, the register has a little chute on the side that just spits out the coins, while the cashier gives you the paper portion.

The wiggly line above a straight line means approximate, as opposed to equals.

The superscripted number is referred to as an exponent.

  • what about counting back change - I find many people have that problem too.

  • I can change!

  • This is one of my pet peeves! I want my change counted back to me but they just hand you whatever the machine says along with the receipt. I play the old lady card and go over the receipt and count the change before I leave the checkout because I have been double charged and shortchanged at my grocery before.

  • I often am given a confused look when I pay a check of $11.03 with $21.03. One girl even handed it back to me exclaiming "you gave me way too much".

  • Lemonette, I learned to make change the old fashioned way and taught my 3 grown kids too. My grandkids will probably to advanced to learn such trivial stuff. I hate to see a young person try to make change and not know how. it is truly sad to watch..

  • I used to be a cashier so, yea I can make change.

  • Amen Sister !!!!!! You have hit the nail right on the head with this video !!!!

  • God I hate math!

  • There ya' go. I can change. I learned in my Granddaddy's grocery store and my Mother's gift shop. I can calculate a tip in my head too. I remember when change was counted back too. I liked that.

  • Sage advice. We shouldn't be as dependent upon calculators as much as we are.

In fact, I think the Brady Kids said it best when they crooned, "When it's time to change, you've got to rearrange who you are into what you're gonna be. Sha na na na na na na na na. Sha na na na na."

  • Yeah! mathematics is not necessary in every day life if you want to have a job where all you have to do is say "PAPER...OR...PLASTIC?"

Have you ever heard about critical thinking...that's how math is helpful in every day life, it teaches people how to think and develops their brains. it's because of that fear of math that modern people are becoming more stupid.

  • I need to take your advice and learn how to change. Part of my job is cashiering. We have an automatic change machine. When I have to make change for someone, I have to get the calculator to do simple arithmetic. It's pretty sad.

  • Yes, I can make change. My first job while in high school was as a grocery cashier. In those days, our registers did not tell us how much change to give back to the customers. We had to figure it out ourselves.

When my sons were ready to handle money, I taught them the old-fashioned way of making change. All is well =)

    Penny for your thoughts!

  • : )

  • If you take the inverse of the sine of the square root of .5 as y approaches infinity, you will have a career whose motto is, "Would you like fries with your order?"

  • I lOVE to see a new video from you!

  • You hit it on the head. My older children can change better than the younger.Always asking for the calculator. Whats up with that? We were not allowed such in school.

  • Calculators are helpful too.

  • yes im trying to change, because im a little too stuborn sometimes,i should just let things that bug me go sometimes.GREAT VIDEO.

  • Omg! it's sad when I go to a Fastfood place and go to pay the bill.when it's $8.98 and I give them a dime, they look like their head is going to spin! thanks Lemonette!

  • My head is spinning upon reading your reply.

  • I've seen that.

  • Yep, I can! (yay for me!) But your right about this....I really enjoyed your thoughts!

  • I can change! :)

  • I'm good at arithmetic, it's math that gives me issue. It's a language I don't speak, but I can learn it. :)

  • When I see videos like this from you it makes me wonder what instigated it.

  • dang i wish we had arithmatic, im going to study online most likely cus i can do the 10 percent and 20 percent but not in my head just on a calculater by taking say 100.00 times 20 and instead of pressing equals press the percent sign thats all i can do, lol

  • Yup I can change. It's very sad that some people can't.

I just love your video's lemonette!

    Brandie

  • I work these days with a touchscreen register that tells you what the change is, so you can do no wrong unless the computer crashes lol But my first jobs, way back then, we had "ka-ching" cash registers, and we had to calculate the change in our heads and count it out to the customer. So, yep, I know arithmetic. All that other math is darn complicated and gives me a headache, ouch lol But I respect those who know and use that advanced stuff in their lives and jobs. :) Great vid!

  • AMEN! I can change. sad to see allot of the younger generation can not and rely too much on technology.

    B-)

  • "expotentials" :D

I need help changing my underwear

  • Yes I can too. Back in the olden days when I was young, you had to do that in order to get a job. But even earlier change was part of arithmetic tests - maybe 3rd or 4th grade and counting the change back to someone was part of it too. Great topic Lemonette! :)

  • Thanks for being a force for 'change' in the world! ;-)

Somehow I managed to learn, but I'm hesitant to give school any credit for it somehow!

    Insightful and fun...thanks!

  • Nowadays if a cashiers register tells her to give you back $32.40 change and you only gave her a $20 ... by God thats how much she is giving you. Half can't even count. What's up with that. When the power goes out ... they hafta close the doors. Lemon .. did you go to the kind of math where there was those ott and itt and ott and that stuff? I learned to count from 1 to 50 getting whippings from my Mom. If she would stop early I would say now you done messed up my counting. LOL

  • I can. I CAN!!! Sorry I'm just so proud of myself for being able to do these things. Muah! : )

  • Yes! I can change. :)

  • Yes, I can change! Certainly...but it amazes me how many people don't know.

  • exponents.

  • :):):)

  • nice vid

  • I'm from the old school! I can do it!
