Outstanding!!! (There was a version of Richter playing Passepied by itself, without Clair de lune.... I'm not complaining, just curious why it was taken off)
@Toverashka The normal problems of being in a live performance. Of course, he was too involved in the music to do what Jon Vickers did in one memorable performance. He stopped singing and yelled, "Stop your damned coughing!" at the audience. Not that I blame him for venting his frustration, as I fully understand it. But I doubt it did much good. ;-)' I just wish people who have to cough would leave before it gets too distracting...
@philipvanlidth proper air conditioning of the hall may help: clean air with proper humidity. imagine jam packed 2000 people breathing wearing perfumes and new fancy clothes that may still be airing out fabric processing chemicals.
@chopin7tristesse My own experience is that most often the person has a cold or is fighting one off and has a tickle in the throat that causes him or her to continually cough. When one has that kind of problem, one should either have something like a lozenge that can sooth it on one's person (hopefully in a container that doesn't make too much noise when you take it out) or leave before it can become too much of a distraction or annoyance to other people.
@chopin7tristesse However, I will grant that sometimes there is just too much dust in the air, and when a staging uses a lot of smoke to create a fog effect and that goes into the audience, it can be very difficult for audience members who are sensitive to such materials...
@philipvanlidth Dry ice (CO2) may be used for low-lying fog -- as in the boat ride in the phantom of the opera. (CO2 is heavier than air.) Or, glycol-water vapor for a mist in the mid-air.
Anyone with cold perhaps should stay home. even though it would be pain to miss someone like Richter. missed Blechacz due to a snowstorm, but got over it.
@Fenix112 Ha, I noticed that too, and my immediate impression was, "it's lovely that way," not "it's wrong". Get your nose out of your score and use your ears.
I guess that just the Arrau's last recording is slower than this. This is just beautiful, one of the best Richter's interpretations. You have to listen to Arrau's recording, it's simply amazing. To bad is not on youtube.
@avhfj He plays it even slower on Melodiya's "Richter plays Debussy" in Moscow, which is absolutely incredible; one of the most touching performaces ive ever heard... Check it out
finally a video of a magistral interpretation of this piece. Oh I wish I could have witnessed a Richter concert...
also a great breath of fresh air from all the "twilight videos" featuring this piece, most of the times poorly played, unable to show the true beauty of Debussy's works. I also recommend all of his Preludes! =D
not only by far the single finest performance of the suite (and, in fact, the only performance of Claire de Lune I still enjoy listening to; I HATE the violin transcription, even as played by Oistrakh, and most of the other versions as well), but, imho, one of Richter's greatest performances. his pp is beyond belief
I wish they had handed out cough drops!

Oh my, another achingly beautiful recording. If only if it were not marred by a noisy audience.

He plays Claire de Lune so much slower than everyone else; gives it a wonderfully ethereal quality.

@esgalhado Richter DVD, London performance when he played with lights off, is available if that can be a consolation substitute.

the image of Richter in masquerade costume is brilliantly appropriate here, in view of the literary inspiration behind Clair de lune:
Votre âme est un paysage choisi
Que vont charmant masques et bergamasques
Jouant du luth et dansant et quasi
Tristes sous leurs déguisements fantasques.
