Female gymnasts are smaller, lighter (therefore more aerodynamic) and more flexible. Never mind the fact if a gymnast is training her skills prior to puberty, when puberty hits (causing a change in height and weight) she will have to readjust everything to be able to execute those same skills in her new body.
And for all the jabs going on - you can't fake or cheat on talent and quality...that's what He and her teammates displayed in Beijing. I'm as American as apple pie, and I would have put the gold medals on them myself. The girls won. Their gymnastics cmte or whatever might have done some illegal things - but from a gymnastics perspective, this team was the best.

This isn't based on their looks. It's based on documented evidence from official Chinese sites that state that they are underage. Before jumping to conclusions and calling people sore losers, read up on the evidence that has been found. I wish as much as anyone that they were of age, but unfortunately they aren't. Yes!! I have a Chinese friend at school and she is considered 2 years older in China then she really is. But it has nothing to do with conception, or at least that is what she tells me. When you are born, you are 1, because it is the first year that you are alive. Then when Chinese New Year passes, you get another year on your age. So since my friend was born a week before Chinese New Year, she was 2 and had only been alive for a week. Thereafter, your age increases on Chinese New Year.

Apparently, IOC doesn't regulate or enforce rules anymore...their investigation appeared to be mostly for show. He Kexin is very good, but I'm not convinced that she's REALLY 16.
He Kexin is an amazinggymnast and she clearly won the event. But rules are rules, and there is a reason why there is an age limit. I could personally care less about USA winning gold, but it bugs me that China could(allegedly)stoop to entering a kid just to win. I see your point, but i am still leaning the other way. The spreadsheet of athletes' ages prompted allegations not just for one gymnast, but two or three.. A mistake may occur with one case, but 2 or 3 mistakes seems much more unlikely. Unfortunately for He Kexin, she is copping most of the heat because she won gold.

In the case of the lip syncing, the first news I saw of it was the some guy from the organising committee saying that the girl did lip sync. Anyway, I think thats not an issue to dwell over at all. These athletes move away from their parents in order to train because China is such vast a country. Sure Liukin won a more prestigious gold, that is OBVIOUS. But, He Kexin beat Liukin in gold, and that's why there is so much controversy about her age. Then, the age controversy spread to Yang Yilin, (won about 3 medals). Then American press said, WHY NOT ALL?

Instead of giving them both golds (which would have been the right/objective thing to do), the idiots officiating the competition took it upon themselves to give the medal to the athlete who "came closer" to executing it than the other. He Kexin winning by 0.1 by Liukin classifies as beating her in this case. The numbers say 0.1 gives He Kexin the gold. I look at the numbers from the judges, which ARE not only from China, but from other countries as well.

This isn't based on their looks. It's based on documented evidence from official Chinese sites that state that they are underage. Before jumping to conclusions and calling people sore losers, read up on the evidence that has been found. I wish as much as anyone that they were of age, but unfortunately they aren't. Yes!! I have a Chinese friend at school and she is considered 2 years older in China then she really is. But it has nothing to do with conception, or at least that is what she tells me. When you are born, you are 1, because it is the first year that you are alive. Then when Chinese New Year passes, you get another year on your age. So since my friend was born a week before Chinese New Year, she was 2 and had only been alive for a week. Thereafter, your age increases on Chinese New Year.

He Kexin is an amazinggymnast and she clearly won the event. But rules are rules, and there is a reason why there is an age limit. I could personally care less about USA winning gold, but it bugs me that China could(allegedly)stoop to entering a kid just to win. What the Chinese government publishes is, in my opinion, about as truthful as a tabloid magazine. I wouldn't put it past the bureaucrats to cheat just to gain more glory for the motherland. I hope the truth comes out and justice is done.

That was before the age restriction of 16 years was imposed.. The fact that the USA has won medals with young gymnasts in the past only makes it worse. It suggests that talented young American gymnasts were denied the opportunity to compete at Beijing due to their age.

Not only did hackers unearth several Chinese newspapers that stated her age as 14, but also two official documents from the General Administration of Sport in China.
I have read the documents myself - they list the age of every athlete in the Chinese Olympic team!

Underage or not... If you are ready to compete in the Olympics you should. There's no sense in holding back a talented athlete. I thought it was kind of ridiculous when the rule was made. But, her bar routine is beautiful, but don't get me wrong, Nastia Liukin is amazing.

I see your point, but i am still leaning the other way. The spreadsheet of athletes' ages prompted allegations not just for one gymnast, but two or three.. A mistake may occur with one case, but 2 or 3 mistakes seems much more unlikely. Unfortunately for He Kexin, she is copping most of the heat because she won gold.

In the case of the lip syncing, the first news I saw of it was the some guy from the organising committee saying that the girl did lip sync. Anyway, I think thats not an issue to dwell over at all. Again, there is completely no proof that she is under 16. Don't judge by appearance. Also, things ARE culturally different in China. These athletes move away from their parents in order to train because China is such vast a country. Sure Liukin won a more prestigious gold, that is OBVIOUS. But, He Kexin beat Liukin in gold, and that's why there is so much controversy about her age. Then, the age controversy spread to Yang Yilin, (won about 3 medals). Instead of giving them both golds (which would have been the right/objective thing to do), the idiots officiating the competition took it upon themselves to give the medal to the athlete who "came closer" to executing it than the other. Don't talk about how she "beat" liukin... she merely won out of a subjective move by the idiot officials.

He Kexin winning by 0.1 by Liukin classifies as beating her in this case. The numbers say 0.1 gives He Kexin the gold. I look at the numbers from the judges, which ARE not only from China, but from other countries as well.
Argue about the unfairness of the judges? In this case, many are incompetent because they never had an elite gymnast in their country before. He Kexin got the gold plain and simple. Liukin got silver. Conclusion: He Kexin beat Liukin.

Stupid Chinese people standing by the cheating without knowing that younger age is infact a greater advantage to the other competitors such as Nastia Liukin who legitimately entered the Olympics and deserves medals more than any other Chinese "Women" Gymnasts other than Chung Fei.
But I can't really complain, I expect nothing less from a country like China who is no stranger when it comes to cheating even when the whole world is watching.

Ok, so they are awesome gymnasts...that isn't the point. You wouldn't have even seen them compete if the IOC had got their shit straight in the first place. Lying and cheating gives the sport a bad rep and the whole "fair play" of the Olympics turns to crap. I am sick of people ruining it for the whole world!

I know it's a mistake when letting 14 year old girls play when they know they're underage for this...but they did great in their performances. Nastia may be 20 or something, but she didn't do her best to claim for a gold.

The US is crying about losing? The mens team accepted their bronze medal because the Chinese men played by the rules. No one is protesting any of the diving competitions because everyone played by the rules. But no, let's blame the US and other countries for expecting the same from the Chinese womens (or girls) gymnastics team.

That's just a given. 14 year olds are always better than the older athletes because of their bone density...why do you think they are banned in other int'l events???
