Top level courage to sail in a U-boat. It must be quite a sensation to take on water and sink to the bottom. But perhaps there are modern escape pods in newer subs.

In the ocean, a submarine is like a needle. They are not easy to find. I tried to find one the other day.

@seapeddler One means is to have a chemical substance in containers within the diving (ballast) cells. It reacts with water, generates a gas undeer high pressure and pumps the water out. It works deep down as well for a start and makes the boat dive up really quick the less waterpressure there is to slow down the expansion of that stuff ( something very exponential). I heard of a test run that made the boat jump out of the water and fall back then causing broken bones.

@northerbrewer Kind of hard to prove since there's no hard evidence ( ie. an engine)- also if Akroyd Stuart did invent the c.i before Diesel why did he not persist with it instead of going on to produce lamp start low compression engines ( hot bulb)?

Significant problems in the early days developing a jigh presure injection system for a true diesel. On the other hand its much easier to make a low presure injection system for an oil engine.

Thats my take.

@northerbrewer Having done a little more research I'm inclined to agree with you- not alone would the injection system have caused problems but also the construction of the engine itself given the high pressures involved......I seem to remember reading somewhere about one of Diesels assistants being killed by a prototype exploding.
