Once you open the lock make a note of the position of the 2 disks inside, they have a section cut out.

A combo lock works by aligning the disks inside with the bar that drops in between them.

You can deduce the combo in this manner.

I do have another example within just the English language and just here in the US. The northern states and the southern states have plenty of their own words that are said in only their "areas".
