Supplies:

1 Large Glass Jar

2 Large metal ball bearings

1 STRONG earth magnet (The one in here was taken from the inside of a hard drive I believe)

1 12V PC Power supply fan

Some spare wood, and time

You need to fill the jar with water, and put a little food coloring into it, not to much or it will be to dark. Next put the ball bearings into the jar and place that onto a stand similar to what is in here. The magnet is glued onto the fan, and try to center it across the fan.

It's the magnet that is spinning the ball bearings, and the glass is very smooth, so they slide easily. You could also try a pill shapes piece of metal, play with sizes, or have a couple to show the difference in funnel size, as the bearings/metal pills would be changing the rotational speed of the vortex.

You should have the fan within an inch and a half of the bottom of the glass jar, the magnet should be no more than an inch away from the bottom of the jar while spinning.
