Greatest War hero of WW2. The true Captain America. He had to tone down his real life heroics because he didn't think Hollywood would believe him. Captain America needed a Super hero Serum to become strong and a super hero and inspire the country. Audie Murphy did it while being 5'5" and weighed 110 pounds. Denied by the marines the air force but accepted by the army. Promoted to the corporal in invasion of Italy. Where he contacted Malaria. Yet still kicked the shit out of the Nazis. no space!
Audie Murphy did some amazing things, but that probably was because he was psychotic. He had no regard for his own life and luck was on his side. His 1955 biographical movie (where the footage for this video obviously comes from), was just 10 years after the war; but I suppose he forgot what a German uniform is supposed to look like. The movie was so cheesey; they used the WW1 steel helmets for the Germans and practically no field gear. The famous battle at the end was supposed to be in winter.
destry rides again!! supplanting the role begun by jimmy stewart!audie was also great inthe original "the unforgiven" with audrey hepburn, charles bickford, burt lancaster and lillian gish!
I remember in Aug 86 when I arrived at 3rd ID in process at Heidelberg they put a group of new recruits in a room & put "to hell & back" on now that I think about that time I realize how cool it was
Well done. I wish someone would redo the movie "To Hell and Back". It was pretty much a farce. I suppose they didn't want to get too real. Today if someone like Tom Hanks or Cappola did it we would get the real feel for what Murphy did.
He was the most decorated American soldier of ALL TIME, not only WWII. A true American hero. Sgt Alvin York of WWI, was the second most decorated American of all time.
Sorry, your effort is filled with spelling errors, incorrect medal identifications such as you referring to the Silver Star Medal as the "Silver Cross." All medals are capitalized, especially the Medal of Honor! Also, there exists an "Order of Precedence" in listing the awards, not alphabetically as you did, with the Medal of Honor at the peak! QUALIFICATION badges are not military awards; they are only badges!
I agree with you 100%. I'm a Vietnam Combat Veteran. 1968-69. I was Awarded the Bronze Star with V Device, and the Army Commendation Medal with V Device and 3 Oak Leaf Clusters...which indicate 4 Awards of a particular Medal.
I have much respect for Lt. Murphy. To Hell and Back is one of my favorite movies. I'm sure this was a difficult roll for Lt. Murphy to play being that he was very humble. It is outstanding Americans such as this, that make our country so great among nations. Respect.....
I've been a huge fan of Audie Murphy for 15 years, and I had joined the Audie Murphy Fan Club. I have 29 of his movies on tape. I wrote to one of his sons once, and his son sent me a picture of Audie. Audie was one of a kind. He was and still is the greatest American hero. I wish I could have met him. He is my favorite movie star of all time. One of the nicest compliments I ever received was when my wife once told me that I resembled Audie Murphy.
I had the privilege of commanding Audie Murphy's old company (B Co, Ist Battalion 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division then stationed in Kitzengen, Germany). We had our own copy of "to Hell and Back" which we showed our soldiers once a year. He once came for a visit. Wonderful person and great American hero, The real deal.
I think all can agree that both men were great for what they did for their country. Gen MacArthur maybe did not kill 70 soldiers, but he did lead an army to defeat the Empire of Japan..
The video makes a small mistake. Audie was not the "most decorated combat soldier in US military history." He was the most decorated of WWII. Even the Guiness Book gets the "most decorated ever" wrong. The distinction of "most decorated ever" is a bit hazy. Gen. MacArthur received more high-valor decorations than anyone, from several nations. David Hackworth was decorated for heroism and merit 97 times. And there are several two-time Medal of Honor recipients. Regardless, they are all heroes!
Audie Murphy has a statue in washington saying he is the most decorated soldier , if u disagree y dont u try to have them tear it down, and y hasnt anyone opposed this claim, its because no one can hold a candle to Audie Murphy
You don't get it. He was the most decorated US SOLDIER OF WWII. Not the most decorated American serviceman of all time. There are many other servicemen who received MORE decorations for valour than Audie, including multiple MOH recipients. The statue you speak of is not an official source. Do your homework.
@danrieke Murphy was the MOST highly decorated soldier for combat action in the military history of the U.S. with 12 awards for valor while having only 3 years in the active Army up to 1945. MacArthur had 11 for valor over 52 years.. Hackworth had more over his 26 years from 1945-1971. In the overall view, Hackworth didn't compare with Murphy's achievement in such a small time frame.
General MacArthur wasn't awarded as many valor decorations as Murphy throughout his career of 52 years!
thx4post Wiz...My mother used to sit me in front of the TV as a kid to watch his movies and I have collected as much as a can get. He has a wonderful website too. Very inspiring, I really never had a father, a hero so, I really look up to men like Audie Murphy, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery. All may not agree with me but, to each their own. Real men are honorable, humble, considerate, compassionate and HUMANE. And we all have are cobwebs in the closets...LuVisPeace.
1955... To Hell and Back was the first movie and first date with my future husband. He joined the ARMY serving for 26 years. Two tours in VN. People like Audie Murphy have a special place in my heart.
I think he got the Medal of Honor for stopping a big german attack.
he and his squad were at a defensive position when they were attacked by armor and supporting infantry. After the platoon sustained a number of casulties, he stayed behind while the rest of the men retreated. He held them off by using a .50 cal. machine gun on a still burning sherman tank while calling in artillery strikes over the radio.
Audie Murphy is truly one of the great fighting men in modern times. A testament to the old Marine saying: "It's not the size of the man in the fight, but the size of the fight in the man." When I visited the US in 2000, I went to Washington, and took a tour of Arlington cemetary. I skipped JFKs grave not to miss the changing of the guard at the grave of the Unknown soldier. By coincidence I noticed Audie Murphys stone right next to the path there. Awe-inspiring moment..
thank him for all who can't make that trip.. nice video.. thanks, 6 uncles served ww2 wish the last two alive were able to share their stories without the hell..
In the movie To Hell and Back, it shows Audie at the induction centers and being turned down. Some of Audie`s war buddies claim that Audie only told half of his T.H.&B. story. Audie was a humble man and did not want to mention his other heroic deeds while at war.
It is too bad that Audie did not receive enough help for the trauma he experienced in WWII.
i read some of it. the other branches did not want him .they said he was to small.guess he never tried the air force. my dad was in the airforce .a gunner in the b-17 and he was smaller than murphy.

My dad saw combat in The Bulge, and was most proud of his Combat Infantryman's
Badge. It clearly illustrated who saw action.... and those who did not.
