Any cakes I have on display that are out in the open can just be dusted lightly with a soft pastry brush just to get rid of any dust. If it's out in the open to be viewed and admired, dust will gather so it's up to you to keep an eye on it and treat the piece as an ornament and keep clean as best you can. Glazing won't prevent dust landing on it.
The mats I use are from Orchard Products. You can find them online.
Hi, I have a little home based business - Custom Cakes...I wanted to make a few dummy cakes as displays in my studio. Can you use Royal Icing for piping and leave it on your cake? Is that OK ...will it keep? Or do you use something else? That little bride and groom is gorgeous!
hi! im a begginer at this whole fondant world, and i loved this idea! i was wondering, what kind of fondat did you use? i did one and it was not good because it would ball appart, they told me to use the "royal fondant" or something but i´ve never tried it...which one do you recommend? thank you
Can you use a dummy cake for an actual wedding? I have to do a cake for 500 people. I thought if I just did a smaller real cake mixed in with the fake cake that would work...have you ever done that?
I always do that for my wedding cakes with figures on top. It means the top tier can be taken off and kept as a reminder of the day. I make an extra cake for cutting and keep it separate.
@dlg1460 That is a popular thing to do when a bride can't afford a large cake or wants the look of one but only have a smll wedding reception. They are reusable for the next wedding, or rent, etc.
size: Huoooge rollin' pin. Indeed. Very interesting bit about keeping it thin for a dummy. Me being the fondant grunt for my gal, I'm curious what "thickeness" I should use for an actual cake though? :)
@cheferos you have that "roond" the wrong way Chip McRib! The thicker paste should be ON the dummy, not off! Your gal knows her stuff without any hints and tips from me. I'll help you with this issue when I see you both next month! Woohooo!
Thanks so much for this video! (and all your others).. So very helpful... I just want you to know that your videos are MUCH appreciated. They have truly been a big help to me.. Thanks!
I am praying for a video for a square cake. Is that in your plans? For a dummy and a real one? To be able to "see" it, solves issues for me:) I just can't get it to remain level all the way to the corner edge! No matter how little pressure, or, support I try to use through the process! I'm stumped:( I think I need to "see" both, done properly by a knowledgable instructor!. The bride wants square cakes. Dummies-add visually. I see conflicting info-bigger pan and trim or use size pan you need???
@BirdOfParadise777 I did do a small square cake video which I think ended up on my Vimeo page. You should be able to find that on my blog I think. I will do another showing a square dummy as I don't do many real cakes much these days, mostly travelling and teaching. I'm not sure what you mean about the pans. Write me personally and I'll try and help you out. :o)
Lorraine! You wonderful woman! I have been searching YT for a long time looking for this wealth of information. I was having some issues when trying to cover a dummy cake and gave up. You have come to my rescue just in time! I have been asked to make a wedding cake and I wanted the bride to be able to have something to "play with" so she can test ribbons and find the perfect look.
Thank you Lorraine, so nice of you to show us this. I have to say, every time I see your bride and groom figurines, I just... I don't even know what to say, they're stunning! Really hoping you can make it to Australia one day to teach a class or two! (or 12 he he)

can any local baker do a dummy cake for you?
BLACKBEAUTY8989 2 years ago
I wouldn't think so. This is something you would do yourself to show off your own work.
