  • this bass just sings ... this is his fretless.

1962 jazz bass veener board, stamped september 1962.

I wanna hear this wood played by italian bass player Dario Deidda.

  • Felix should get this bass...I would love to hear and see him playing it.

  • Does anybody know what song is being played from about 1:56 to 2:08?

  • I'll Take You There...Staple Sisters. What is the song played between 4:35 to 4:50?

  • @1973pbass A Remark You Made...Weather Report. Thanks for helping me out finding that song, I've been trying to find it for about 2 years now.

  • I would love to see Felix play that shit.

  • Although Trujillo currently owns the instrument, the Metallica bassist agreed in writing to relinquish the instrument to the family at any time for the same purchase price.

Once again, Youtube idiots comment without knowledge.

  • When Metallica played at Yankee Stadium for the Big 4 on September 14, 2011,

"Robert Trujillo played Jaco Pastorius' famous "Bass of Doom" during For Whom the Bell Tolls."

Further research reveals: ..."the owner of the shop refused to return it to the Pastorius family resulting in protracted legal squabbles. Almost two years passed before Robert Trujillo was able to jump in and help make it possible for the family to settle out the case and regain control of their father's prized bass."

  • @nopossiblity who are you to comment on how much Robert T has in terms of dollars? Reminds me of the folks complaining about Metallica's suit against Napster with people saying Metallica has enough money already.

  • "I'm not a fretless player, so..."

Sounds pretty comfortable on that bass if you ask me. Nice touch on that fingerboard, Victor!!

  • sheesh, calm down people.

  • Wow, that's Jaco's bass. Wrap your mind around that. Jaco held this instrument in his hands at one point in his life and made music with it. How awesome would it be just to hold it in your your hands.

  • Trujillo is only the caretaker for now. The family has agreed to this. Both Trujillo and the family plan to eventually have it in a museum.

  • My God that sounds amazing. Jaco had great taste.

  • The playing of Victor Bailey with Jaco bass is so good !...

  • A bass is a piece of wood wit metal . The important thing is the bass player.

  • @Popex85 NO give it to me PLEASE,never seen so many assholes in one place, the only way to replicate this clusterfuck is with the words ATTENTION K-MART SHOPPERS! listen to yourselves, its either' Trujillo is a rich jerk','Jaco is the best aka: GOD' and 'he gave it back to the family',Then: 'No he did'nt' ! are you people fucking nuts? you sound like Fathers Day in the Ghetto" the Websters definition of CONFUSION gone Rampant!

  • TRUJILLO ALLREADY RETURNED THE BASS TO METALLICA, he played for a concert or 2 and then he gave to jaco's family, stop ranting him.

    Read wikipedia if you want..

  • FUCK THE METALLICA MOTHERFUCKERS!

  • GREAT BASS!!! THATISALL :). I hope when i pass my bass will be broken in and played by others and given to safe hands. Dont you think??? thumbs up! lol

  • @thechuckwillkill Its the actual bass. Fender didnt start making the replicas in that finished until after they found this.

  • no tendrian que mostrar esto.tocar lo mismo con el instrumento de

don yaco me parece una falta de respeto.entregar a la familia

  • I got to point out ... this is somebody's HOME video, not mine. So it hadn't been originally planned to be a great Youtube video. It's just a small clip I stumbled on surfing the Jaco related pages. It is simply just the ONLY video I have so far found on the restored bass. If you can come up with better one please post it. But it's pointless to whine about the quality or the content of this clip. Also I have say I will delete any kind of verbal abuse towards the comments. Let's keep it friendly

  • i hate trujillo, doesn't belong in Metallica and is a total dickhead about not giving it back to the Pastorius family, he has so much fuckin money that it doesn't matter

  • @n0possibility I don't hate him, but i feel he should give it to the Pastorius family. That's what i thought he would do. as you said "he has so much fuckin money that it doesn't matter" I don't know if there's any legal battle or something like that going on, but i really hope it returns to the Pastorius's.

  • @sprojojoing

I would honestly rather have it be owned by someone who will actually play it.

  • @sprojojoing Trujillo doesn't have the bass. He bought it and gave it straight to the Pastorius Family.

  • @sprojojoing: i wouldnt just GIVE it to people if i spent money getting it in the first place. Rob might have tons of money to spare but he still spent the cash that he worked for as a musician. Its only fair that the Pastorius family purchase it for however much it took for the guy to go through the trouble of getting it out of legal turmoil.

  • @n0possibility Erm...

Hate to crap on your hate parade but Trujillo DID give back the Bass of Doom to the Pastorius family, get your facts right before trying to ruin his reputation.

  • @alstocko yea, but not after a bunch of legal battles, if he really wanted them to have it he would have bought it, then given it to them, as i said, he has so much money for being a shit bass player that he could give it away and not think twice about the money he lost

  • @n0possibility your an idiot, read up before you make that comment. Trujilo has the bass, because the family let him, and he said that they could buy it off him at any time for the price he bought it for, and he would sell it no matter what

  • @Jwk1706 you're an idiot, he's undeserving of that bass and an overrated bassist who managed to get lucky

  • @Jwk1706 you're an idiot, he's undeserving of that bass and an overrated bassist who managed to get lucky, as stated, he has so much money that he could give it away and not think twice about the money he lost

  • @n0possibility what makes him undeserving? and he did basically give it away, it wasnt like he was being selfish about it. Also who made you the judge of who gets what bass

  • @n0possibility Part of the deal he signed when he purchased the bass was that at any time if the Pastorious family wanted the bass back, they could get it for the price he payed.

  • @n0possibility Rob is a great player and you are just a net troll, a loser...and btw he's about 100x better than Jason Newsted

  • @n0possibility He bought it TO give it back to the family. STFU.

  • Sounds beautiful.

  • like victor bailey said it's just another '62 stock Jazz. except the neck is epoxied fretless and the pickups are custom wound to give that punch. it would be great if somebody knew the K Ohm reading from the pickups

  • epic bass rape. so sad.

  • Kind'a lame. .. The bass was stolen from Jaco, around 85/86 while he was living on the street in Greenwich Village. .. The bass was completely rebuilt after Jaco smashed it. .. The man plexied out is one of the men involved in the scandal to resell a stolen instrument and profit on it. .. The Metallica guy who owns it now has offered to sell it to the Pastorius family but he will not give it away. .. There's a video of him playing it on stage with that band and it's painful to watch.

  • That bass should be in a museum, in a glass box, with a label: "God's Bass"

  • that isnt jacos bass

  • What pretentious nonsense . Lee ,inside with dark glasses reminds me of the country singers wearing cowboy hats indoors and still isn't any hipper than the guy in the back ground that was pixilated out of the film. This film illustrates that it was never the bass but the player much as it was never Scott LaFaro's stringed bass playing itself either . It seems like between the three of them they have nothing original to say.OK , I was curious . I thought it might have been Pastorius is 1962 .

  • Not in the Pastorius' family ... the bass is NOT at liberty to be touched by Jaco's 4 children. The bass is NOT where it belongs.

  • Jaco would want the instrument to be played until it disintigrated.

  • @WeCamefortheDead I don't know about that. He threw it in the sea once, somebody had to go get it. And then he smashed it. If it wasn't for other people who cared about the bass, I suppose it would have wound up in the dumpster.

  • Too bad the video is ghetto, it's worse than a home video of a birthday party.

  • They should return the bass to the Pastorius family; that ship owner has no legal right to it!

  • @thebassistsoldier Metallica's bassist aquired it and later returned it

  • @MrMeAndMyVideos and now im happy

  • Great to see this. I understand that this meeting in particular was set by the owner of the shop, when the word spread around. After this meeting, the pressure rose for him to return the bass, which he didn´t wanted to, and motivated Trujillo to step in. But as I understand Trujillo is the owner. On Fender´s site we read "Although Trujillo currently owns the instrument, the Metallica bassist agreed in writing to relinquish the instrument to the family at any time for the same purchase price".

  • So when this meeting happened, the bass was still on the possession of the guy at the store, which by an incredible thing I can´t remember his name, or the name of the store, and I read about it just two days ago.

  • i guess is a nice sound , but tell u something, i have seeing that bass when was broken , and was no so bad to restaored and keepit the original paint, instead to do this "sanwich"with laminated woods.another doubt , to think thats isnt the original is , ..why isnt any pistures when was restored in progres or a film, about restauration?

i got some pictures after was broken , the head stock was really bad, but no so bad to put , at least in playable condition.i dont think is the original.

  • well , finally , there is THE Sound...BUT , i have seing the bass in parts...i got some pictures and serial numbers not only for thE 1962 , also the 1960 jazz model.

tell u something ,that bass the (62) was not so damage to do thats , sanwich laminated wood , i got my duobts THATS is the real one(humble opinion)cause was not to tuff to restored with the original painting.

one more doubt.WHY ISNT ANY PICTURE OF FILM OF THE RESTAURATION ?

    THANKS WHO SHARE THAT FILM.

    LOVE U ALL !

  • give it to the blood of jaco. there is no amount of money that should be able to take that bass and the problem i see here is that every (especially professional) bass player should see that. this entire group should have immediately decide to give it to his family when they were done.

  • Wow -- That guitar has Jaco's vibe! Maybe it's a "pre CBS" thing. They just built 'em different.

  • Dave Pastorious is his nephew and plays bass for elephant gun in Brevard county, FL, and he plays like him too...

  • It´s a magic sound , sounds so extraordinary.

    It must be played.

  • The bass is now back with his family thanks to Robert Trujillo of Metallica.

  • @Djarra The Trujillo "rescuing nonsense" is truly making me sick. Robert Trujillo OWNS the bass. It is on both the Fender and Metallica websites. Apparently most people are not reading the paragraph that states "Although Trujillo currently owns the instrument, the Metallica bassist agreed in writing to relinquish the instrument to the family at any time for the same purchase price." The bass is either on tour with Metallica or stored in Metallica's instrument vault.

  • @JF68Firebird How he initially helped the family, olny they can say, but in the end, a rich bass player bought a bass. The family would've purchased it I am sure if they had the means. He did NOT rescue NOR did he give the bass to the Pastorius family, as most people are assuming. He is neither altruistic nor benevolent, simply a rich opportunist.

  • @JF68Firebird Thats not the bassplayer I would want to own a bass gem like this.

Metallica has no ..none.. nothing.. to do with jazzfusion.

The bass was stolen from Jaco , how can anyone claim the rights to this bass except the inheritors of Jaco Psatorius.

  • @ShareTheSphere well sure Metallica is far from jazzfusion. However, Robert Trujillo has been playing for over 30 years now and if you listen to his work in previous bands such as Infectious Grooves you just might be suprised at how many different styles he can play. So I would say despite him being in Metallica, he CAN appreciate a bass such as this

  • @iwillnevergetone5 ok,i checked it out .it´s not very mindblowing..weather report were.Jaco was.

    I. grooves sounds like dancefloor Dj music.

This is THE base of the jazzfusion original masters.

Truijillo having it ...I dont like it at all.

    It´s like a pirate and a mermaid.

Put the base in the hands of Jaco´s son Felix.

    Never mind the money.

RT could be pleased with getting respect for returning it to were it should be.

  • @ShareTheSphere ok, I see where you're coming from. I just didnt want people to assume that R. Trujillo was a ''one-trick pony" But I do agree that it would be nice to see the BOD in the hands of someone in the Pastorius family.

  • @JF68Firebird Trujillo doesn't tour with the bass but it is stored in James' lock up (which is very high security) the BoD Rob uses on stage is a reissue he's had since he joined Ozzy. (if you look the one he plays on stage has EMG's)

Rob bought the bass so it was out of the hands of the dealer. If they family win their legal case then Rob gets his money back and the family get the bass. That is the price agreement. Once the legal fight is over it goes into a museum.

  • @Djarra You cannot buy property that is currently in litigation. Those are the initial court instructions that both parties are bound to. Sadly, one must conclude that the family lost their legal claim. Why would Trujillo need to safekeep this item from a dealer who has kept it pristine for over twenty years? Give it to the family for the same purchase price means he is also allowed to sell it...of course, he owns it. He does have a reissue but the real BOD has made a cameo at some shows.

  • @Djarra I think we are all in agreement that the only people that should be making decisions regarding the BOD (museum, etc) are Jaco's four children, nobody else. The only people that should be playing Jaco's bass, are any of the four children. Please give the BOD to the Pastorius family.

  • where's wooten playing the bass?

  • @drg92asturias he starts playing the bass at around 5:05

  • @ejlarsonstratford oh thanks, i haven't read that

  • jaco-possibly spinning in his grave!!! just put the bass down......

  • Trujillo is a GOOD MAN

  • My goal of uploading this clip,Which is not mine (I found The Original video from the Bass Player magazine site) was to give more people a chance to get a glimpse of the bass, AND to inform that the bass WAS not in the Pastorius family. Eventually thanks to Mr. Robert Trujillo ( Metallica's awesome bass player) the bass now IS in the hands of the Pastorius family. That was great

news, and very generous & unselfish move from Trujillo since it propably involved a lot of money to achieve that.

  • @sprojojoing All I can say is "thank you" for doing the absolute RIGHT thing.

  • I think Victor Bailey is very self-serving. Why doesn't he stop making noise and let other people talk. Victor's 3 favorite words are "I, Me, Mine". He is like the kid in Guitar Center that gives you a headache, and he wants to BE JACO so bad he can taste it. Sorry Victor, you're not him; never were, never will be..

  • these guys are a bunch of assholes, so fuckin pretentious. give the bass back to the family, it was my understanding he sold the bass before he died

  • @pranky4 Victor Bailey is definitely no asshole. He was chosen to fill in on bass in Weather Report after Jaco's passing, but obviously didn't achieve such greatness - though I'd consider him another master of his craft. There's no living electric jazz bassist that can top Jaco's playing. I guess in that respect, you can call all bass players following Jaco an asshole, but that's pretty silly.

  • guys the bass is with the pastorius family right now

  • @albass69

that's great news. Thanks to Metallica's Robert Trujillo.

  • Since if I paste the direct link (gives an error in Youtube) just Google

" Ingrid's Jaco Cybernest " and go to the forum ( Rap ) and select topic JACO'S FRETLESS news for more information.

BTW In my opinion Ingrid's Jaco Cybernest is the best Jaco website existing.

    Check it out !

  • This is wonderful

  • @RoofFiddler

To be sure it was jaco with the skills to bring out the best in a bass, but have you ever truly played one that sang? That sang to you? It's not simply a tool or conduit, that bass gave him his signature texture. It is such an animal that only he could have tamed.

  • And to that, let me add that Jaco would've been Jaco if he were playing on a $99 Chinese POS bass. If all things were equal but he had played on a $99 POS instead of an old Fender (which at that time was a $99 bass) the same people would insist that his $99 POS bass had special properties and was unlike all other $99 POS' and that only a genius like Jaco to unlock the special powers of "The POS Bass Of Doom"...

LOL @ Gear Queers. I guess emphasizing gear is much easier than practice.

  • Cool to see, but way overblown... The whole idea of 'relics' is what caused a bunch of superstitious Catholics in middle ages to dig up the bones of all the dead saints of Europe, smash them into little pieces and pass them around.

A bass is a bass. The instrument itself is maybe 1% of the ultimate music that's made with it. A lot of 'enthusiasts' love to study and argue about the minutiae of the gear, even though very few of them are even good enough players for it to make any difference.

  • !!! I've only just found out about this on another web-surf but, by God, that sounds like JP's bass!!

But who is Captain Mysterious, with his coupon blocked out?? What has he to hide? Agreed: bass should - by now, anyway, have gone back to the family.

Well done for posting! Made my day, albeit a couple of years late!

  • If not to the Pastorius family, then it should be in a museum guarded 24/7. in 100 yrs that bass will be like a spoon Jesus Christ might have used.

  • I recently purchased a Fender Jazz Bass manufactured in 1962. I verified the year with a number fond on the neck plate. It has a dark brown finish, maple neck with mother-of-pearl block inlays. It still has the original pickup cover and bridge cover along with the thumb rest. The neck is very straight and it plays nicely. The only flaw is that the bridge pickup doesn't work, but the neck pickup still does. My question is if anyone could tell me how much this bass might possibly be worth?

  • @4stringMafia

    - Pearl block inlays weren't introduced on the JB until 1966

    - Thumb rest appeared first about 1973 (before it was a 'finger' rest below the strings).

    - I don't think dark brown paintjob was available from the Fender factory in '62, so it would have been refinished or stripped

    - "1962" neck plates are available on eBay for about $20 and up...

... so it's not stock out of the box 1962, and thus it's very hard to tell without having an expert look at it.

  • @4stringMafia

I suggest you checking your bass with a professional.

1962s Jazz Basses necks do not have block inlays, they have white clay dots instead. After CBS purchased Fender, they started with block inlays, which was around 1964. The neck should have the year of manufacture penciled or stamped at the base.

  • @wysiwyg248 Fender started with block inlays from August 1966.

    i'm certain about that. ;- )

  • fake

  • there is a part that shows Victor Wooten off camera playing the bass... 5:11 yuck!

  • Victor Wooten sucks at this bass, he only can play his Monarch... this is how you realize how amazing was the Jaco's sound, there is no such thing like him, JACO is GOD!

  • .... Except for the fact that it is Victor Bailey playing in the video...

  • @andreswolff77 Really? I've seen V.W. play on other brands other than Fodera before....you forget he also has a 5 string Joe Compito fretless bass as well...it's never the gear it's the player dude....and also....the quality of the video isn't great other so I strongly disagree with your opinion.

  • @andreswolff77

I am sure you were corrected already. Victor, is Bailey, not Wooten.

  • @wysiwyg248 Yeah, but from people that didn't check the whole video, you can check at 5:08 where says that is Victor Wooten Off-camera and Victor Bailey is sitting in the background...

  • Thanks for posting this! Certainly it should be given to the Pastorius family (or at least the proceeds from selling it). Victor B. may have said that there was nothing special about it, but a few times when he played a nice high note with some vibrato, it sure sounded mellow and sweet like Jaco. Not many fretlesses can get that crescendo, horn like tone. Note also how very much different it sounded with Victor W playing it. Those old Fenders were great!

  • bailey is the best sound on!!!

  • in my opinion this belongs to the pastorius family. after all this was a stolen instrument! that is probably why that guy's face was blurred to conceal his identity. however, my much respect to our modern day bass players idols(ones playing in the video). shame on the guy who stole this!:(

  • Awful Awful sound quality. You can't get that much of an idea what the bass really sounds like !

Give it back to the Pastorius family. I would hope that they would put in on display in a Museum. After all this bass was a stolen instrument, so the pixelated dude....bad karma would no doubt come to everyone along the line This bass is up there with an axe that was owned by Django, Clapton, Jimi, Fab Macca etc etc etc etc. It's the " Holy Grail " of basses !

    By the way. Awful

  • Jaco hands were unique, anyway this crazy piece of wood from 62 sings beautyfully ... listen to Victor Bailey playing on continuum ... John Francis has chosen the right tool ...

  • Hey Rooster !!

Great video ! i searched for this some time ago!!

What a great tone !! it sounds like the real one !!!!

Btw,I post an short new video of my jaco bass and the acoustic 370. hope you like it.

  • That bass sounds alive. Unreal.

  • Give it to the Patorius family, in my honest opinion, because they are 1. im guessing the people Jaco would have given the instrument to,

    2. Im sure with Felix or John or whoever it is whos trying to become a professional bass player in the family, to try to fill Jaco's shoes, the bass would inspire them THAT much more. I wouldnt give it to the public, and i say that with a heavy heart, Jaco is a HUGE idol, and a HUGE mentor to me, but for safety reasons, give it to the Pastorius's.

  • @ianonfire Rob Trujillo has done just that.

  • @Djarra That's when you know, he is a REAL bass player.

  • Thanks for posting. Man, this is like the Holy Grail, I've waited anxiously all these years for this. I wish there was a video showing some close ups of this historic bass. So.....my question is, are we ever going to know who had it all this time, or who found it, or what's become of it now? I think the family should own it, but there are countless bassists like myself who would make the trip to bass Mecca just to see it.

  • Quistion, why is that guys face blured out?

  • @majesticTJC I assume he's the owner of 30th Street Guitars who is currently in possession of the bass and is having a lawsuit filed against him by Jaco's kids. Hence why he probably doesn't want people to know what he looks like, in case somebody comes along and kicks him in the balls. Which I would.

  • Dude, this is the Fab Faux, my mom cleans the hosue of one of the guitarist's mom!

  • Give it to Felix....come on guys..

  • I agree with Walrus, famous classical musicians' instruments get passed down for hundreds of years. This should be no different. I am very curious where it is now....

  • ... 'cause I really think that the family deserves the bass. At least that point I feel the bass could be at a safe place, and still could be played.

  • Thanks for your comments

    Keep it going ....

  • If you have to ask when Jaco passed away.....you have no business touching that bass!!! They pass it around like it is "just another bass". If it is just another bass and you don't even know when Jaco passed away then give it back to his family where it belongs.

  • ahahah... dude, Will lee's one of the most famous session bass players in USA, do we give a fuck if he doesn't know exactly when the guy died ? and I think Jaco would be more proud of a guy that used his influence to become one of the greatest ,than a geek that can't play but know EXACTLY when he passed out ...ahaha

  • not sure why you feel the need to insult, this is an open forum, I am actually friends with Ingrid and it is a shame that bass is not with her and the family Jaco and her made.

Every bass player knows when he was born and when he died, it is like a Christian not knowing when it is Christmas.

This not a pissing contest, it is my opinion.

  • @bassplayerdotca Every Bass Player knows this? Boy, that's quite the assumption.

  • @55mrj Quoting you :"Victor's 3 favorite words are "I, Me, Mine". He is like the kid in Guitar Center that gives you a headache, and he wants to BE JACO so bad he can taste it." lol Boy, that's quite the assumption. :) Do you by any chance know Victor personally, to say that ? If not, You make quite quick assumptions. Another thing .... This is just amateur homevideo, not intented to be a documentary or a biography of Jaco, Victor etc....

  • It really is just another bass. Yes it has a whole LOT of history but why shouldn't "just" it be passed around? It shouldn't just sit around being marveled, it needs to be played. All this royal treatment stuff has got to stop, really. As bassists many of us recognize Jaco's (powerful) influence but knowing every detail of his life up to his death does him no more honor than any other tribute. I'm sure he couldn't care less for all the worship people shower him with.

  • I sure hope that this instrument NEVER is put permanently in to a museum or sold to a collector. I hate to see that. This bass needs to live on by being played by someone who loves it!

  • Ingrid, Felix, Julius, Mary and John DESERV that BASS !!!!

  • should go to felix and julius

  • I love the remark you made bass quote that takes me back.

  • As Indiana Jones would say ..." It belongs in a Museum '.

  • I guess the guy with the blurred face in the video

    has it (?)

  • Maybe..

  • I heard about this. Anyone know where the bass ended up?
