Think about this. Power out so you can't watch tv for updates on where the fire is. The radio stations giving false info. You don't know where it's coming from. The way to escape is to go towards another fire. your town looks like 8pm when its 5. By the time people relised where it was coming from, it was on them. No fukin chance to get out. What about the choice- Drive away and risk burnin in the car or stay at home with water to protect u? It doesn't mean the water will save u. u have no idea.

People were in the process of grabbing food and keys as soon as they heard the radio, if you know little about flash fires please don't comment, because its a matter of minutes or even seconds before it hits, many bodies were found inside cars.

People here in the bush are highly skilled and well prepared for events such as bushfires - we get on average about 200 fires a year. But once in a few decades the severity takes people by surprise - Ash Wednesday in 1983 was the last time, before that it was in 1967.

Most of the deaths occurred in Kinglake and Kinglake West where the fires fueled by 100km/h winds and 46 degree heat, moved so fastarrived before anyone knew they were there. Not to mention the fire had a front of something like 20 km width. You want to try escaping that?
