  • What's GNER?

  • @AdmiralArcher It's the initials for the Great North Eastern Railway.

  • These would of been perfect for the ECML 155mph on normal routes 186 on a few new allignments.

  • I think they looked much nicer in this livery than they do in Eurostar livery. Shame they didn't wear it for longer.

  • Talk about seized calipers! They haven't been scrapped, they are currently in France and the contract was renewed this year quite recently.

  • Diese unnötige Mars Werbung.

  • is that a GNER White rose ?

  • why the hell would they use these?

  • Great trains. Rather than replace them with electric locos and stock the UK re-engined 30 year old deisels!

  • what happened to these did they get scrapped?

  • @MrZkr123 they went to eurostar

  • From the angle of when the first one you filmed arrived at Peteborough, it's easy to see why the doors were painted red - the are very camouflaged!

  • what happaned to them

  • G.N.E.R running Eurostars? What next. South West Trains running TGV's? Actually that would be good. Standing at fleet station and hearing the whizzing of those beauties instead of the chugging of the sprinters. Exciting possibilties. Mind you they woild need to install overhead wires.

  • Does anyone think a Eurostar looks like a Pendolino and a 125 mixed?

  • @yamhamdan The Eurostar looks more like the US train the Acela

  • did gner operate to france?

  • i think they shouldda hadda eurostar line so they could go fast!

  • im surprised the 373s even fit on the platforms at peterborugh!

  • @Mrzkr123 Eurostars will eat the electric out of the OHLE's :)

  • maybe now that there are more electrified lines, and higher speeds, maybe they will take the older Eurostars, and put them on the other lines now since they are going to replace them with Siemens ICE technology like trains.

  • I miss the Eurostars on this line

  • I would've loved to see them invading France or Belgium in that livery

  • trop beau !!

  • Great video mate, I miss the good old days of GNER :(.

  • Great video. Never saw any personally as I live on the WCML. Nice to see them in GNER colours, the Eurostar grey is such a boring livery. Nice Vid!

  • what is their max service speed?

is it on HS1 where they can hit 186mph?

  • @Amtrak1194 Yeah, 186mph, but only the Eurostar ones do that, these aren't used by any domestic services in the UK any more. There are domestic 395s that go to 150mph on high speed one though.

  • I wouldn't have minded seeing the 91's replaced by these(Mind you I like 91's too), but they'd have to give the 373's here the 91's horn :)

  • I personally don't see why they took them away all they needed to do was repaint them, actualy buy them rather than rent them and start replacing the 91's with em

  • Why did GNER stop these trains in leeds/wakefield westgate i use to love them!

  • because running them on the ECML is a waste of their potential, they cannot go anywhere near their top speed

  • Oh kk Thanks:)

  • what will they do with them?

  • Neither can the 91s.

  • They should really just install in cab signalling. Even the 91s can go 140mph!

  • @edj66 on train simulator the 91 did 175mph flat out

  • it also mainly because GNER went bankrupet

  • Good vid,do we still build trins in this country?

  • awsome vid 5*

  • Thanks!

  • I think that's the most pathetic comment I've yet to see on Youtube -go and get a life elsewhere!

  • It isn't nice to talk about what you don't have, get a life.

  • honestly samjohnson, buy yourself a one-way ticket to the moon. There's propably no internet, and you know wha samjohnson? Humanity wouldn't feel sorry for you

  • Makes you wonder what our railways could have been like with some proper investment over the last 30 years...

Love the standing start noise, a bit beefier than the 91 vaccuum cleaner noise

  • hey, be grateful for what you have, here in california the top rail speed is under 70 mph, passenger trains share tracks with freight, and those tracks were poorly constructed and are poorly maintained

  • There's talk, or has it progressed further than that, of a north-south high speed line in California isn't there?

  • funding has been approved for that, and it is currently in planning, but they won't start work on it until 2011, it won't be done until at least 2020, our state government is extremely inept, especially when it comes to public transport, and the proposed system is something this state should have had years ago

  • That would probably apply to most of the States wouldn't it? On my various travels in the USA in the last 10 years or so, albeit mainly searching out wildlife, I think I've only seen two or three passenger trains amongst a load of freight movements. One in the Miami area and one near Salt Lake City certainly come to mind but these were both short distant hauls.

  • yeah, the whole rail system in this country is shit, except in the northeast corridor

  • @apbrit2009 where in Cali are you talking about? amtrak coastliners and the Coast Starlight regularly hit 90mph on every trip they take

  • sounds a bit like the 92s when they startup.

  • @XxMCR999MCRxX They sound similar to eachother as thehy both use the same motor control system, Gate Turn Off thyristors (GTO). The control system is similar to that in the Class 365/465/466 (Networkers) however, it is different as it makes a different sound.

  • you have really good video quality and interesting subject matter so i have awarded 5* :-)

  • Danke!!

  • @Marcomanseckisax They could go a little faster if they upgraded a bit of infrastructure

  • Thanks for the info!!!

  • Since when did GNER own eurostars and where did they go from and to?

  • They didn't own them - they leased them. I think that the routes they covered have already been discussed in other comments.

  • Why were they withdrawn?

  • Here are some possibilties. The pantographs were for high speed line use which the wireing on the ECML was loose so the trains were only limited to 110mph to avoid overloading the overhead electric lines supplies. On the London to York and Leeds services, the door opening and closing times took longer than the Intercity 225s. the reason why the GNER Eurostars were limited between London to York and Leeds was because of the long platforms and also the speed restriction.

  • wow

  • the GNER eurostars look horrible i rekon

  • they look a whole lot better than the white and yellow eurostars running to the continent. Oh and learn to spell

  • What's the point of your ending comment?

  • nice video 5* + fav

  • yes Walrus was right they were called the "White Rose" this was the official name for them used at GNER.

And HSTsteven is also correct, originally the White Rose services ran to York, but after the extension of Leeds station they were able to accomadate these longer trains, so they ran to leeds until there demise

i know because i worked for the company when they went to both York & Leeds

  • I was thinkin about these today

Did they fit in the platforms?

nd they were called white rose services

  • Sure - but this is how most enthusiasts referred to them!

  • Its not actually called a GNER Eurostar because Eurostar is the name of the company not the train its actually called a GNER class 373

  • did these used 2 tilt on the ECML

  • No these were introduced initially to york, however there french pantographs at speeds over 110 would bring the cheap OLE down, it was later found south of Grantham they could do 125, so limited to 110 HSTs and 225s could beat them, so GNER got more HSTs

  • Your wrong they only ever worked KX to Leeds

  • No when they were first introduced they ran to york, i know because i went on one specially, it lest Kings Cross at 1230 one of the. but after a while leeds was decided as a better terminus because of platform lengths, and linespeeds after doncaster are that of 110 (the white roses top speed) not 125

  • They 1st worked to York & later they ran them to Leeds. If you want more proof my Girlfriends dad worked for GNER on one of the stations on the ECML as a station platform supervisor. He once told me that one of these sets got vandalised with graffiti. So they ran one set for a bit half in Eurostar livery & the other half in GNER livery. If you want i do have some photo's of a GNER livered Eurostar at York which I could scan & send to you.Cheers.

  • ay76 do you still have those photos?

  • There are NO TGV types featuring "tilt" technology.

  • These trains were simply the best. When they ran on the East Coast Mainline they certainly eased preassure on other services and also the issue of the lack of seats. I was lucky enough to be invited into the drivers cab - its very cramped I have to say!

  • What a beautiful train, where are they these days?

  • Back in France and on the eurotunnel. Nice as they were it was a bit of a waste of the train's capabilities running them on the ECML, especially as they were restricted to 110mph, where even the regular class 91s are 125mph running.

  • Thanks, I was on the Eurostar from London to Paris back in 2005. I have to say it was one of the best experiences of my life.

    Thanks for the info.

  • Some of them have gone to France for use with SNCF domestic services. Otherwise they're stored at Temple Mills

  • I went on one of these once, I think it was 2001 ish. It was in GNER livery but the interior was still eurostar yellow and grey. It was a very quiet and comfortable train. Shame we dont see them round here anymore.

  • Well, that's something I thought I'd never see, a Class 373 Eurostar in GNER colours. Looked good though.

  • dont they still have 3 left

  • Why did the GNER Eurostars go anyway?

  • Because Eurostar (who hired them out to GNER in the first place) wanted them Back

  • What's happened to the GNER 'eurostar' fleet?

  • All 5 of GNER's 'North of London' trainsets went into storage in Dec 2005, but then in 2007 some/all went into service on the LGV network for SNCF, complementing their TGVs.

  • It would be nice to see more of these 373s but in NXEC colours

  • That is so smart!

  • gner eurostar my fav of the gner fleet 5/5

  • Thanks Howard

  • Most certainly the good old days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 'nuff said!
