Comment from an amateur: Corelli has infact a very good sounding voice for Otello. It's a pity that this video/recording is so short. Furthermore Caruso had also a splendid 'Otello voice'. But it is a pity that there is no recording (was it invented that early, the phonograph?) of the magnificent voice of Francesco Tamagno. As far as I know, Verdi wanted this part=Otello to be sing by just Mr Tamagno. And if we hear the video/rec. on YT of "Francesco Tamagno - 'Esultate' from 'Otello' /continue

@petereuropa We can only imagine about how wonderful the voice of Mr Tamagno was when he was young and more powerful.

Jussi Björling has in my point of view a too light tenor voice for Otello and so had Gigli. Any comments?

IMO from top to bottom DelMonaco was the best Otello I ever heard. He had the strength at the bottom and the brillance at the top. The live studio performancew with Tebaldi are magic.

I think Corelli could have been a great Otello also and what a pity he did not sing it in his prime.

"Davizia" the best is still the great Ramon Vinay. Del Monaco was very proud when he said Vinay he could be his successor in this opera, he says in an interview, he heard it. Could be his successor but not the best. Have you heard them both?. El Gran Maestro Franco Corelli might be superior to Del monaco having full Otello interpretes.

"andyroma72" sinceramente está usted equivocado, el mejor "Otello" de la historia operática, continua siendo el gran Ramón Vinay. El gran maestro Franco Corelli habría sido un gran y magnifico "Otello" ,de haberlo interpretado completo ya que las partes que interpretó son magnificas, insuperables.

i read some time ago he was prepairing to sing this role ,sadly it never came to fruition. We can only imagine the glory of that ringing voice in this opera it would have been magical if that is the right word, what a tenor,what a voice, sheer brilliance, what a loss to us all, viva corelli

Muy bién Martinucci. Indiscutiblemente el mejor "Otello" es el Gran Ramón Vinay; luego podriamos decir Del Monaco, J. Vickers,podría ser J.Giacomini. y Martinucci. Tengo la seguridad que después de Vinay podría ser el Gran Maestro F:Corelli, las interpretaciones que le he escuchado de algunas partes de esta opera son sublimes, como todo lo que él interpretó; que gran "Otello habría sido. Entre los enumerados no tiene nada que hacer Domingo,es muy audáz y a cantado, no bién "Otello".

"OTELLO" ES EL !GRAN RAMÓN VINAY,! ESO ESTÁ CLARO EN LA HISTORIA DE LA OPERA. A LA FECHA NO HA SURGIDO NINGUNO QUE, NI SIQUIERA ,LO IGUALE. EN VOZ E INTERPRETACIÓN; DEL MONACO SE SENTÍA MUY ORGULLOSO DE QUE VINAY LE DIJERA QUE PODIA SER SU SUCESOR EN ESTA OPERA. Escoche a Vinay y se dará cuenta de por que historicamente es "Otello" . Aparte, Corelli tiene una o dos arias más de "Otello" y el dueto de "Giá della notte densa," está en directo desde el MET., es sublime.

Las arias que he escuchado de "Otello" interpretadas por el Gran Maestro Franco Corelli agradan mucho más que cualquiera otra, incluído Del Monaco, la ecepción es el Gran Ramón Vinay. El Gran Maestro Corelli interpretaba muy bién y su voz era muy potente pero no aspera, más dulce cuando se requería, con perfectos diminuéndos,pianisimos, sostenidos y grandioso en las notas altas, las que tomaba perfectamente. Aún no hay quién lo supere,ni siquiera que se le iguale

as I said in other place, Vinay is great Otello. Perhaps one of 2 or 3 the best, but comparing with MDM he lacks in his voice the focus of sound, the "squillo", "oberklang". That makes him the number two!

Unlike del Monaco Corelli could actually sing it fearlessly with a real b in context.

He would have had a great natural sound for it-maybe a bit like Martinelli. Who said this role should be sung like a Wagnerian heldentenor?

Corelli è stato un grandissimo tenore, uno dei mie preferiti,ma spesso timoroso delle proprie prestazioni. Forse non l'ha mai cantato per non confrontarsi nel ruolo dove il re incontrastato era MDM.

Per un semplice motivo: ascolta l'ultima parola "l'uragano" e senti quanto sua voce è leggera, troppo leggera per questa parte. Ci vuole la corda più spessa à la Del Monaco o Cura. Il suo canto è bello, come sempre ma la parte non era scritta per lui.

Ti ringrazio per la precisazione e dato che Corelli era un perfezionista si capisce perchè non l'abbia cantato.

Tuttavia dopo aver ascoltato i migliori del ruolo: Vinay, Del Monaco, Vickers ci siamo fatti una idea ben precisa di come deve essere Otello.

Però se ascoltiamo l'Esultate di Tamagno, e Verdi l'aveva scritto per lui, le nostre convinzioni crollano perchè la voce di Tamagno non è così scura e probabilmente i gusti dell'epoca non corrispondevano ai nostri.

@daruglon l'ha fatto invece!! sembra strano, ti racconto una leggenda che circola. Mario Del Monaco era andato ad ascoltare l'Otello di Corelli, e ascoltando alcuni pezzi fuori dal camerino di Corelli si meravigliò. Tanto che, entrato, gli dissi "Caro Franco, peccato che sul palco non canti così!! Senò saresti tu il più grande Otello, non Io". Pazzesco no?? ora non so se sia vera, però potrebbe essere

Non so l'aneddoto: ma per il resto Otello era l'unico ruolo in cui Del Monaco poteva superare Corelli. Per il resto, in quanto a vocalità, fraseggio, dolcezza, pastosità, Franco gli dava le piste, decisamente.
