It started off good...Roy was laying down substance...Maurice couldn't quite keep up with the substance...but simply seems to be playing higher and louder...then it was alright after that point...either nice to watch!
so glad those two trumpeters went to Jakarta for the Java Jazz Fest. saw two of em jam in the hotel they were staying. man, they are giants! and roy, just like in this clip, he would just come and go like that, i guess that's just him u know.
And for the haters...when was the last time u had a gig with a musician like roy or Maurice? Or played at Bowery or the blue note. Bottom line Maurice is making it happen. Roy is still killin em. Peace love and let's not forget that the musician community needs to b helpin each other out not hatin or disrespecting
Let's try and break away from jazz being thought of as exclusively be bop or miles diz bird and trane...realize that that music like all art was made for a specific time and place. These guys are playing music for today. They are still living the essence of jazz even though they aren't swinging. If u can't appreciate the energy here......
Both of these guys sound great!!!! Problem with jazz in America is that even when the musicians are just trying to make music, others will come along and make it a competition. Thank you chelseabaratz for reminding us it's just music. Tadd1, no reason to hate on either one of these cats. Last time I checked Dizzy could be quite the so called "Clown" on stage. Relax folks, no ones getting a grammy off of your thoughts of this!!!!!
I don't understand why anyone here is tryin to make this seem like something it's not. Those cats are having a musical conversation. They are playing off one another and making real music. And I was at that gig. And I was hangin with Roy at the Jazz Gallery before the Bowery Poetry Club. No beef there. All love. Why would Roy put Maurice on the RH Factor album, and put Maurice in his Big Band and then go and play on Maurice's gig if it wasn't all love? lol
Does anyone know Roy's history. Uh,,,he grew up one music like this, My teacher plays in his big band and Roy told him that playing in church was one of biggest influences on his playing and if youve been to a black church, you know that gospel and funk/r&b/soul music are basically the same thing. Im glad Roy is not as close minded as some of his fans, A close minded attitude is the difference between the fan and the artist. An artist wants progress and fans want everything to stay the same.
Dang man if all they in gigs played was the straight stuff they played on the recordings and the released albums, the gigs and off record performances wouldn't be worth it.
I agree. He probably never heard of the RH factor. Which happens to be a good CD by the way. Plus, this is nice to see two of the best trumpet players grovin like this. (By the way I gave you the thumbs down cuz I was playing attention when I was clicking). SORRY
you all are so blind and ignant,, yes IGNANT< roy is definately not feelin' the funk, this other cat keeps copying his licks then getting all wIreD and making the good go bad , look at 'groves face and body, sound and voice, he starts playing those staccato's and doesn't get off, slaps this dude with his last lick and WALKS OFF NOT SAYING A WORD<<<<<
Copying? I didn't hear a bit of copying... I heard conversing. You obviously don't know either Roy's or Maurice's playing NEARLY well enough to speak on the matter.
dont kill me 4 saying this, but Roy makes me feel a lil Miles in him, because he didn come out the gate tearing the roof off..he built that solo nicely.
no i completely agree. i actually got to talk to him last week when he was in chicago and he listed miles as one of his influences.
also, notice how every time roy takes a solo he's building directly off of what maurice did. he might be high, but he is still listening and playing like a champ.
oh i know but roy is my favorite player on the market today. even thought wynton is sick and others roy is still my favorite cause his style is sick. lol maurice is sick also, but i love roy
i agree with that of course, lately for him he has been pretty clean atleast when he plays with the alumni allstars, and honestly is sounding better than ever, except the i remember clifford clip, he is high as fuck in that. lol
definitely agree with you but none the less Roy Hargrove is a blazing trumpet player. My current band teacher actually shared an apartment with him once but playing none the less.
@PINCHUNO considering your intelligence is so supreme, i don't know if it warrants me replying. your great intellect and supremely large brain might explode if i stimulate them so. i apologize in advance.
1st, i was talking about the music: the more a shit player does drugs, the worse he sounds. 2nd, if my comment were so ignorant it didn't warrant a reply, yet you replied, does that it mean it's really not that ignorant? 3rd, fuck yourself.
@ezekielvictor Very eloquent. This doesn't detract from the fact that you said "every musician should do drugs", it doesn't matter what context you said it in, it is still an extremely ignorant and potentially harmful thing to say. By the way, if you can only reply to criticism in the way yuo did, then go fuck yourself too. Happy? My brain is very big.

j/k i'm sorry, i don't have any beef with you. sorry for starting shit. my original comment was exaggerated, cynical, and uncalled for. hope you understand.
sometimes music especially jazz is to not give a fuck and just play and have fun.....if you know of hargrove and brown's playing you would understand that there hella just jammin not caring about dissonance and phrasing more like how much can they push there blowing at the end to hype the crowd (rockin out with your cock out!!!!). but in other performances they can do the whole beautiful sounding type shit too!!!!in my book this is true american music
I don't want to offend anyone, but this is really some unmusical sad shit! What can anyone take from from this bullshit pissing contest? Horrible, thin, blatty tones. No meaningful ideas. Just a bunch of dancing and jive crap.

I have to agree that there is not much thought in this set...neither player exhibits chops ...and it is just not worthy of "a jazz player"...most college players and a few high school guys could do better....
They're pretty sick but check out from 2:10 - 3:00. Roy starts playing one note with that rhythm and pretty much stays on that and then slightly goes up while Maurice mimicks it and then tries to show off while roy just lays it down very simplistic which is why roy is the best. Few ideas but he sticks to them. People need to take a note on this one to many notes and ideas flying around these days with no purpose. Just my 3 cents.
I feel that Maurice was doing to much, and wasn't sitting in the pocket as much, which is y i liked Roy's much better. It was melodic and sounded like he was going somewhere with it. Maurice sounded like he was competing, Roy sounded like he was playing
This was fun. Obviously blowing on a 1 chord funk jam is not the musical challenge of either of their lives. I heard Maurice in NO in May and he was killer.
