I remember trying SOOOO MANY TIMES to get that stupid boss at the end because I had to fire off at just the right moment, but I was under the impression it had to be the BFG so I never got it. This is why walkthroughs and spoilers are great.

The book "masters of doom" explains why John Romero is the last boss. Turns out, everyone was fucking pissed at him because he was neglecting his duties in Doom II, since he was too busy playing deathmatches, paying attention to other projects and generally being a gaming superstar with too many public appearances and such. I think this was Carmack's idea, if I recall correctly.

I just tried this with the Classic version. Seems like the easiest approach without cheating is to use the BFG to blow away any monsters blocking your path to the elevator, then fire a rocket into the Boss's weak spot with the right timing, both while going up the elevator and leaping down. I think three rockets will kill it.

There are secret levels after Icon of Sin. You must have the ZDoom port though. When your game is loaded press the ~ key and type in MAP MAP31 and MAP MAP32. They are maps from the game Wolfenstein but in Doom.

Enabling 'Mouse Look' will not help you in any way shape or form without the mod.

It will simply enable the mouse to turn your character left and right. Forward and back will move the character forwards and backwards.
