  • to MermaidJess22,

Hey don't say that, you can still study or learn to sing your nation's anthem. You can do it.

I'm a fan of Arthurian Legacy and British History by the way.

  • I hope I can learn this till the 9/11 when Wales play against the Springbocks in the Rugby World Cup. Good Luck to you! ( Switzerland of course is not in...) So my heart belongs to the mighty welsh dragons

  • I think what this video proves, and moreover the phonetic subtitling (and my own experience of English people trying to siarad Cymraeg to me) is that you'll never be able to truly capture the Welsh language unless you have the accent and the inherent knowledge of pronunciation that comes from being a Welsh native. One of the best anthems in the world though, and that's a fact.

  • @danwales1990 Not true Dan. I know three "English" people who live in Wales and speak Welsh flawlessly. Accents can be learnt. Admittedly it has taken them years of dedicated work, but it is possible.

  • Never more PROUD TO BE WELSH! Patriot and WELSH til I die!

    Happy St Davids Day :D

  • I'm Also ex military and an Englishman living in Wales and i can sing all the Welsh Anthem. Only polite i suppose.

  • @BillJonesuk Well done! I applaud you. (Rugby World Cup) - Its a shame that a Welsh Rugby player, who shall be nameless, doesn't have the common courtesy to learn the Anthem of the country he is representing.

  • I LOVE IT!!!..........THANKS:)))

  • Cymru am BYTH ! :) <3

  • I'm a disgrace to my country, cant sing the anthem XD

  • Thanks for putting this on here, Im an Englishman ( just !!!! only a few miles from the border ) and I have the honour of serving in the army alongside Scotts, Irish and Welshmen and have been lucky enough to have been taught this beautiful language from one of my comrades. out of all the anthems that sound out accross these isles of ours its this one that i like the most.

  • As an Irish man who has watched from the stands as the Welsh rugby crowd sings this I truely love this Anthem and what it represents, for me it is one of the great anthems of the world,I have listened to it so many times I came to want to be able to sing along and so I found myself here, while we are opponents on the field off it I hope to know the words come the 6nations so I can sing in the stands with my Welsh brothers just as I already do with my Scottish ones!

  • Not bad...only minor critique is that you didn't phoneticize the double L

I suppose " caw shla sant " is fairly close...though not perfect of course. (the Cymraeg "O" is really an "OH", it is more open)

  • The first words of Welsh I ever had! One of the best holidays I had as a child was in Wales. Thank you, Wales for giving me the passion to pick up the pieces of my native tongue (I'm a Scottish Gaelic speaker) and take it to new heights.

  • Godd sejw awa grejszus kwin, long liw awa neubl kwin, god sejw ze kwin.

  • With regards to our lads not singing - I used to think the same untilI had the honour of representing Wales (unfortunately not rugby). When the anthem was played, it was all I could do to hold my emotions in check. I couldnt sing it either :-( - I never thought I would hear the anthem and not belt out the words to it.

Go easy on them. It is a very personal thing. (Granted some of the them don't know the words though ....)

  • @emmystonelake BALCH

  • If you're Welsh, the sound of the words come natural anyway. Gwlad will come out as gool-ard because of the accent - and natural ability to get any Welsh word perfect when in the company of Y Saes ;)

  • @FrankieTheTomboy A number of the imitated pronunciations are pretty questionable. "Gwlad" as "gool-ard" is case in point: it is one syllable, not two, as should be clear from the music; the "w" here comes out as no more than a slight rounding of the lips.

  • I am doing research on my roots, which I always thought were Irish for some reason, but lately found out I'm mostly Welsh, on my dad's side, with a little Irish, Scottish and English thrown in for good measure from both sides. I am American born and bred and proud to be but also proud of my roots. Watching this video was interesting. If you Wiki "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau", there is an actual recording of the anthem from 1899. God bless us all! -- atat2dlady@charter.net -- Fernley, Nevada, USA

  • Great aid!!!

Just one minor detail: in your sidebar (bottom bar?) lyrics, one word is missing in the first line of the anthem.

Current posting: Mae wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi

Should be: Mae HEN wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi

    Again, many thanks.

  • i am from wales and this is a very good example thx for sharing my country

  • Thanks for that. Who did the phonetics? Did you do them yourself? I need to get some songs translated into phonetics. Is there any speech recognition software that does this?

  • I'm Welsh and proud :') <3 <3

  • I am an American

That is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard

I JUST WISH I COULD UNDER STAND IT!!!

EVEN WITH THE SUBTITLES IM FAILING WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! :(

  • @77shadowknight. Welsh is one of the most difficult languages I know of to learn. The rules of letter pronunciation are unlike any other language, and it's very tricky to pronounce correctly.

  • im may not be welsh by blood but i grew up in wales and i proudly call myself welsh, unless ofcourse u take into account my dads side of the family are welsh then i do have welsh blood in me.

  • if your dads side are welsh then you are a true welshman. After all it is 'land of my fathers' :)

  • I'm a scouser of Irish origin and I like the Welsh. Proud People, Great Nation and Great Rugby.

  • Filled me with hiraeth!

  • It's a great national anthem. More meaningful than my country's!

But our haka is awesome and I love watching the opposing teams expressions when the All Blacks do it!!

  • The People of Wales have awesome voices!!

  • Second favourite anthem, Australian anthem is my personal favourite.

Though, I shouldn't be saying that.

  • I love their Anthem too! It's got a catchy tune, and it's easier to learn then the Welsh Anthem, even though I still love it!

  • Best Anthem Out there! This makes me proud to be welsh

  • @2323rhod I agree!

  • @2323rhod That makes me proud too and i am Greek....Cymry am byth !!!!

  • Second best anthem out there.

  • ...for me there's nothing like Jerusalem five mins before KO followed by "God save the queen" at Twickenham.

  • no probably about it, defnitely the best and most stirring anthem out there, remember crying my eyes out in chicago with the detroit rugby boys surrounding me with this playing, just at the end of my team talk, after getting them to sing star pangled banner first, some of them even knew this from world cu 99 and sang it too, i couldn't the moment got to me, will always remember that day till the day i die, awesome!!!

  • This rips me up. I am a very strong pro- mEuropean, and am very anti-nationalist. Nationalism usually brings out the ugly and worst side of people. But I am Welsh, and this stirs me into a frenzy of unconditional national pride. Oh well......Cymru am byth!!!

  • if you have no pride in your nation or in the lands of your ancestors you have no indentity.

  • Always brings a tear to my eye. No matter how much I hear it, always weep. Not many countries can say they are as patriotic as us, if not, non of them.

    Wales forever, Cymru am byth!

  • to show if your welsh, go to millenium stadium, listen to this sung and if you get goosebumps...your a WELSHMAN!!

    CYMRY AM BYTH

  • This at the millenium stadium will bring a tear to even the hardest of men. Cymru am byth

  • i played rugby there and had to lead my team on, defo brought a tear to my eye!!!! :)

  • Does Welsh use any characters not in English?

  • no, but several letters are pronounced rather differently

  • Man Proud to be Welsh :)

  • is it hard to learn welsh?

  • yeh

  • No harder than any other language and it's fun!

  • it isn't hard at all infact if you knwon french then welsh will eb easy

  • dwi caru cymru

  • rhwyn cymraeg ac rhydych chi ddim yn neis ir cymraeg yr saes

  • The supporters lucky enough to be at Murrayfield sang the anthem very very well. Long may this continue!!

  • Was very good . . . Welsh supporters brought a brilliant atmosphere to Murrayfield too ;D

  • thank you =]

  • My hair-n wool-add ver n-had eye un ann-will ee me

  • I'm part welsh...and proud =D

  • and i

  • thsi doesnt help at all. in fact i think it makes it worse.

  • click the info and you will find a normal version directly to the right of where you wrote. Or is that too difficult for you as well? If so, listen to the singing and learn it aurally. At least, if you produce your voice as well as these men, it will sound good!!

  • I count 42 in this choir . It sound as if there are a hundred men on stage - a powerhouse of sound. Magnificent rendering. Congratulations.

  • welthawood, the tha in your name probably is being linked to the language as "th" is often used [i am a welsh speaker, reader, and i think in welsh] Im from north wales and i havent heard this name given to anybody but yes i agree that it sounds welsh :) Hope you find out where your name comes from :D

  • thank you so much!

    Weltha

  • cheers 4 those words i cant speak welsh an it does help alot nice 4 this

  • those words are not written phonetically. i speak welsh and that is not welsh. that is wenglish!!

  • The words are phonetic but they are not Welsh words. The sounds that the phonetic words make are audibly Welsh as they are phonetic! If you sing or speak the words on the screen, you will produce Welsh words to the anthem. It is not "Wenglish". You make me want to eat my own face. Get an education!

  • Heard that this choir and Cor Codre'r Aran gave Only Men Aloud a few tips last weekend!! They sang with great pride.

  • You do know all them words are spelt wrong dont you?

  • Yes I do. The words have been written phonetically, as it sounds, which makes it easier to learn.

Thanks for the comment. The real words are in the info on the right

  • i lol'd - hope ur serious!!

gotta disagree with phonetics for a few words - especially Gwlad...

    best.anthem.ever

  • I know it and love it coz we Welsh rule ! :) x

  • Gotta hand it to em, the welsh match anyone for national pride.

  • I LOVE this and watch it constantly in the hope to learn this beautiful anthem in its rightful language. And now...a question. My first name is "Weltha"--we keep hearing in my family that it might be Welsh. Does anyone know one way or other for certain? Many thanks!

  • i know the anthem and i always have .. im welsh .. born & proud to be it too (y)

  • If you true welshman you don't need to learn the anthem you know the anthem the mintue your born

Hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi

gwald beridd a chantorion enwogion o fri.

  • But when you are a Portuguese person like me you will find this way will help... WONDERFULL ANTHEM (i want to learn this...)

  • true true

  • is katherine jenkins not singing the nat anthem? im gutted :(

  • Cymruu am BYTH!!

  • brilliant - i'm marrying a lovely Welshman and we want to raise any children we're lucky enough to have supporting the English football team, and the Welsh rugby boys, so i'm getting into practice now! good luck against the Boks tomorrow :)

  • Two minus points for my post in about a week! I'm trying not to be hurt, but I can't help hoping it's not just because I'm English and I want to learn more about Wales and its fascinating and beautiful culture. It's tempting to give up completely, but my future children deserve to be proud of both their bloodlines and their heritage, so I'll have to rise above it...

  • I'm American and I'm proud of my Welsh heritage. I just up-pointed you (is that even a word?) on your first post. Good for you! And I also have English heritage and am PROUD of it, too! Cymru am byth.

  • I don't think it's becuase you're English, don't worry, probably Welsh people think that there is more to Welsh culture thank rugby and football...

  • brilliant and easy to learn,

    CYMRU AM BYTH!

  • What a fantastic idea, I never learnt welsh at school and this is the best way I have seen to learn my national anthem to sing in Cardiff on 8th November when we play South Africa! Thank you!

  • Thanks for that! I love Wales, and Welsh

  • i love it

  • brill, thanks

    wish i could speak welsh

  • haha me 2 im welsh but dnt speak it id love to i love welsh whoop goes us xxxx

  • Brilliant. Used this to learn the anthem for the grand slam decider at Millenium stadium. There is nothing in this world that compares to 80,000 singing this.

  • thanks for posting this.

  • Pleasure !

  • thanks again.

  • Cymru Am Byth!

    From Llangollen

  • Rydw i'n dysgu cymraeg.

    Cymru am byth!

  • Well, as an Englishman, I don't understand the words - but if there's a more stirring national anthem, I ain't heard it. No wonder your players cry when it's sung before rugby matches.

  • our anthem must sound differently to non-welsh speaking people as some of those words trying to help you don't make any sense .. such as 'gwide' supposed to being 'gwlad' .. dydy hyna ddim yn swnio yr un peth de ..

  • He's put it up photenically so we non-speakers can sound it out.

  • Im From The Rhondda And Loads Of People Come Up To Me When Im On Holidays Sayin The Welsh Are So Much Nicer Than The English. Cymru Am Byth!!!!!

  • can u blame them

  • CYMRU AM BYTH!

  • Bloody magic! (from an Englishman - not trying to stir up bother!)

    Duncan

    Berwick on Tweed.

  • Great vid , Great anthem for a lovely Country , just a shame Ive never been - I live in Berwick on Tweed which is miles away! Oh while I'm here , why is Wales spelt 'Cymru' most of the time , yet the singns on the TVads for VisitWales spell it with a G , ie , Gymru???

    Cheers.

  • The Welsh language mutates naturally, as do many others. So Welcome to Wales signs always read as Croeso i Gymru - the c has softened to a g. If you were saying England and Wales, then in Welsh you have a gutteral mutation and say Lloegr a Chymru. Does that make sense to you? We usually write Cymru a Lloegr in Welsh though. If you GoogleFight Lloegr a Chymru v Cymru a Lloegr, you will see what I mean.

  • soft mutation

  • haha, treiglad meddal! =]

  • hey im welsh and lived in Wrexham

    CYMRU A WRECSAM AM BYTH

  • that isnt the words these are :

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,

    Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;

Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,

    Dros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.

Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,

O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

  • They have written it phonetically, as it sounds, which makes it easier to learn

  • Just wish Tom Jones had tried learning the words - even just the pronunciation - before the Joe Calzaghe fight! Cymru am byth!

  • Makes me wanna wish i could talk welsh : (

  • You can!!!! Start here with this video. All the best, X

  • Lol, my friend need this.

He can't say 'Rwy'n cari ti' right..

and we tried teaching him like 7 times.

Mae e ddim yn deall ni :\

  • Wales and Wrexham 4 life!!

    Cymru a Wrecsam am byth!!

  • I am English, but I have always loved Wales and felt more Welsh than English.Love you Wales!

  • damn i wish there were more of you in the world. its not about the hospital where you were born, its your blood and your soul. not many people get that.

  • lmao! im from tredegar too :)!

  • exactly, i was born in the states, yet, i,m of irish-italian-russian and welsh herritage. me being all those races makes me all ameircan because i,m what america is really about, a melting pot of cultures. i am a patriot to where i was born, but i honor where the roots came from. erin go bragh, forza italia, onward russia and cymru am byth.

  • got to agree with you on that, i was born in worcester but my parents are both from the rhondda and i'm much more proud of being welsh than english. infact i hate it when i'm in another country and they ask me if i'm english lol

  • Beautiful! Thanks for the pronunciation guide. How's about a translation as well?

  • I've only learnt a bit of Welsh and I prefer learning without phonetics as well - better to do it properly. It's a good anthem though. Trouble is, now I know it (I learnt it as I was teaching myself a bit of Welsh), I need to learn the full meaning.
