Very fine touch. Backing off sustain like that reveals detail and precision. I agree that it sounds a little dry (in places) but it never becomes mush.
Just a different interpretation. I prefer less pedal to feature the internal struggle of the rhythm and to contrast the sound with the second melodic section (around 0:23). Honestly, I think people over-pedal this piece to death in order to cover up their inconsistencies, both rhythmic and melodic.
yes, and but have we forgotten the overall style of romanticism? The use of pedals smoothed over the melody with the harmony and bass lines.... otherwise, it would sound dry and like something out of the Classical period, much too planned... this IS supposed to be as an impromptu. Wonderful rendition, though... no matter what people say.
Maybe you should try some more rubato: stretch the tempo a little bit and give it some tension and a well-rounded feeling...just like a rubber band, if you think about it that way. Try listening to Yundi Li's interpretation.
I loved your playing..although I wish it had that "flowing pulse" , if u get what I mean. In the beginning it souned a little dry; I didn't quite feel the wind. More pedaling would be awesome. and also I'd like for you to think about why it was named "fantasy impromptu". lastly please bring out the left hand melody at the end okay that's all I have to say
yeh no too bad. nice one!!although try and use fomre pedal throught the start of the peice. I like how you do the trills during the slower part moderato cantabile. the recording device wanst very good though
the entire feel of the music changed as the 16th notes disappeared being replaced by the unforgettable singing melody. Very nice work! You seem to have a great handle on the poly rythmatic challenges of the opening and closing themes, sort of an auditory illusion! Kudos
I enjoyed the pace of the central theme, in that it maintained a almost non variating tempo throughout the piece. Yet as the tempo (of the left hand) hardly changed,
Seriously use a bit more pedal in the first segment. I know it sounds a bit muddy, but if you keep your peddling under control it'll sound alright. It is a fantasie, and the pedal contributes to the expressive quality of the piece. Other than that you're doing a good job.
Thanks! I find that most people pedal the hell out of the beginning, completely obscuring the frenetic 4/3 rhythmic relationship. To me, dry = clean, and enables me to control the little swirls of sound within each beat or two. I can stretch an 11th, so I usually finger-pedal the left hand to create an interesting "bottom pedal - top unpedal" effect.
Practice techniques? I divide it into one-beat groups, and learn where the notes come together on the beat itself. I only play the notes on the beat and leave everything else out. After, I slowly play each group with everything, concentrating on where those notes come together at the top and bottom of each triplet. Hope this helps!
One of my favorite pieces. Beautifully played. :)

yes i agree, you have exelent technique, but i prefer more pedal, some places are just..so plain
either than that u played it perfectly!

No dude. Use more pedal. Some places just sound too dry... But excellent technique n interpretation. it's a shame.

Your piano has a nice crisp sound.

Fantastic interpretation! I'm pretty tired of people pounding this piece out with no refined touch, and you definitely did not murder this piece.

I think the lack of a lot of pedal is working for you, but please use a bit of hand pedaling because its staccato for the pieces good.

good work!
does anyone know Alfred Cortot's recording of this piece (1930's)?
I think that one is the best ever...
mad246 5 years ago
oh yeah i forgot, when your playing the chromatic scale starting on that g#, you're not supposed to pedal the whole phrase all the way down :P

I like the cleaness of it but.... It sure could use more pedal in the beginning. When i play it, it helps me play the dynamics more expressively :)
also can you slur the notes a little bit more?
Its really good otherwise. I know from experience that its hard to get the 3 against 4 down right. I had to break it up into 12. What'd you do?

i'm also having difficult getting 3 against 4.
