Keanu's performance is the only real problem I have with this movie. I mean, I like the guy, but for some reason he just decided not to try in this one.
Am I the only one that believes that Keanu was perfectly casted? I certainly hope I’m not. The ones that critique his job in this film definitely didn’t read the novel; Jonathan is as drool as it can get, and does not even get the treatment of a main character after he escapes the castle. The real protagonist, believe it or not, is Mina; who was not a fawning little damsel in distress like she is in this incredibly overrated movie.
@VeganHyena Keanu was perfectly cast in Bill & Ted. Full stop. In Dracula he's so out of his depth it's scary. How he has gotten to work with the likes of Pacino, Hopkins, Oldman, Washington et al, is truly, one of life's many mysteries...I would love to know what these actors really thought about his abilities as they acted along side him..
@ThatsSoInane I see your point. However, if I'm allowed to be honest, this movie is nothing serious; it's not a marvelous piece of cinema. Dracula cries purple tears for crying out loud! Keanu's acting fits, in my opinion, because the movie is so over the top and ridiculous.
@VeganHyena I did watch it again rather recently, and you are right, all the performances are OTT. He obviously got most/all of his parts for aesthetic reasons, I can't believe directors look at his work and go "wow, what an actor" Overall, the best acting I have seen from Keanu is in The Devil's Advocate, another OTT film...
I really like Keanu Reeves but talk about miscasting. This was not his role to play. 1993, let me think. Well, Aidan Quinn would've been a good choice for example.
He has done an incredible range of movies and his performances are nuanced and mostly (though of course not always) hit the mark. The problem is that he works in Hollywood where performances have to be hammed up till kingdom come for them to be appreciated. He would’ve been better appreciated in mainland Europe where subtlety is not the exception but the rule.If he Seriously was a bad actor, would so many amazing drectors have taken a chance with him? No way.
I remember paying to see this when it came out, and when it seemed like Keanu died early in the film, thinking thank the gods!! Than he came back with a head full of flour, and bored me some more. There is not an ounce of chemistry between him and Winona Ryder.
@USAGAMES he was pretty popular back then and girls were crazy about him like they are today about that fag from Twilight or like they were about Di Caprio when Titanic came out. He was probably cast just to draw in more viewers.
Critics praised Keanu reeves for playing as hamlet, apparently playing as one of the best hamlets yet. As if! XD They could have picked so many better actors for harker.
@GameJourney that was good acting as a psycho in that movie, i guarantee 90 percent of people whove seen that think so, its a cult classic. by the way, he won a oscar for the fighter in case you didnt know, which he was great in.
I thought Keanu Reeves did prettty well with the English accent, but next time you watch Dracula (if you have ever watched or intend to watch it), listen to Winona Ryder's accent. She added way too much emphasis on every single word.
@regenerstej1995 Actually they both did, depending on the scene. when you watch the scene with her and Dracula in the bed, like you wrote, she puts way too much emphasis. For example: (Oh yes my love, you found me. I've wanted this to happen, I know that now. I want to be with you, always.) Or when she says: (I wanted to feel your touch again) It sounds like she's saying gain as in gaining something. As for Keanu, I'm not even going to start.
@unknownXbeing (laughs) Then I'll start for you. Keanu Reeves slips in this movie more than Seth McFarlane does with Stewie in "Family Guy," and the latter is just supposed to be a funny cartoon series. Reeves sounds like his father was a California surfer and his mother was British and they couldn't decide where to live (or to surf perhaps) so they kept moving back and forth. Other times he looks or sounds merely constipated. I think you get the gist of what I'm saying.
Vanhellsing: yes she was in great pain then we defiled her grave drove a stake though her heart and cut off her head then burned it and then she found pease.
@tiasarahellielorna Actually, one time the venerable Anthony Hopkins had to work with an even worse actor for an entire movie (i.e. not just a couple of scenes). The movie was called "The Edge," it came out in 1997, and his co-star was Alec Baldwin.
Really- what was going through Coppola's and his casting director's head when they made this call? Actually...Except Oldman and (maybe) Hopkins the acting was pretty weak, but Keeanu just stands out on how bad he was in the film
I just watched this movie, Keanus performance is painful, embarrassing but most of all distracting to the movie. i would definitely have enjoyed it more without him. how can people still hire him?
@MrMasoodrodman1 from stress probably. people do loose hair pigmentation due to extreme stress or fear. he went through quite a lot of strees and fear in the beginning of the movie when he's locked in Dracula's castle.
@Skac01 You wrote in the description that a lot of the acting (not just from Reeves) is absolutely laughable. By other actors, do you mean Winona Ryder? If so, why is that? (I know I do)

Now that takes Professionalism.
Hey, I just realized something; if you look carefully in the crowd at 2:40, you Dracula walking away like nothing happened. My impression was that he had just vanished into thin air, but I guess not.
I bet you there's some sick fuck out there that beats off to that Gary Oldman's asswig. I find that really disturbing yet histarical at the same time. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I will never forget that fucking wig, dear gawd!!
this is a great movie. i don't find mr reeves acting noticeably bad, here. he is average. and i don't find resemblance of dracula's hair with an asshole, which, every mature enough person on the planet knows that it has round shape (the asshole, that is). so no fav.
Lol, I just noticed now; at about 2:51 Keanu seems to be slightly slapping back to his Canadian accent, then at 3:14 he yells out like "I knou Wheeh tha Bahst-d sleeps.". I personally think he was the biggest failure in the film.
@11strelokfan1000 Let's also not forget Anthony Hopkins (Abraham Van Helsing), Tom Waits (Renfield) and Sadie Frost (Lucy Westenra)! They were just as good as Gary
@unknownXbeing Yeah, I will admit that at least Hopkins, and possibly these other actors, did fine jobs although I wonder why Anthony used an almost-German accent for a Romanian character.
The cinematography is quite possibly the only redeeming quality of this film...that and the background sound ...honestly its hard to take the film seriously with dracula played by beethoven played by commissioner gorden played by gary oldman wearing his hair like a giant ass on his head!
If you say so, okay. All I was saying is that Oldman didn't make me believe it. He just doesn't have the presence to pull it off. Anyone who plays Count Dracula has to have a tremendous presence. Gary just doesn't have that for me. I think the last man who was able to pull it off was Frank Langela. That was a long time ago. I'm still waiting for the actor who can play Dracula again. These are very big shoes to fill. Any suggestions?
Oldman was ridiculous in this. And Winona is way too weak and puny to play a woman who this centuries-old vampire is in love with. Huh? We're supposed to believe that? What the crap? I think Keanu would have made a better vampire. Come to think of it, I could believe that. Say what you want about him but he has a very strong presence in the right roles. He could totally be a vampire. Anyone would be better than those two snoozes Oldman and Ryder. Ugh!
@YouCantDeleteDenzelL : If you say so, okay. Any suggestions?
keanu's accent upgraded this movie from 'fucking awful' to 'so bad it's good'. He is literally the only entertaining thing on screen for the entire nine hour duration.
And Dracula in the book was dressed all in black, not flaming red housecoats or powder blue suits with blue sunglasses.
And his head of white hair wasn't some weird-ass thing, but rather more Mark Twain like.
And Dracula didn't "love" Lucy nor Mina, they were simply dinner. That was a rip from the Dan Curtis Dracula, which came from the Dan Curtis Dark Shadows, which came from the Boris Karloff Mummy.
@ysbaddaden2003 I've read the book. The book very seldom describes what Drac is wearing so who knows he could be wearing flaming red housecoats or powder blue suits with blue shades (I wish I could look that badass LOL).
Again, we don't know exactly what he looked like. Each character had a different vision of him.
Also, we know he didn't love. Same could be said for the Langella Dracula. *rolls eyes*
But when Jonathan Harker first meets Dracula, he's described as being all in black, without a speck of color anywhere.
Because he's primarily nocturnal, that continues to make sense, although he could be out and about during the day, which he was on at least a couple of occasions.
The book never really described anyone's clothes, after that, but that's no basis to believe Jonathan Harker went about in a sequined butt thong.
Seriously, can't you guys give Keanu Reeves some slack? Yes, I know his British accent could have been better even for a movie made in 1992. But YOU guys try being an up-and-coming actor that gets a chance to be in an amazing movie such as this, and see how you fair with a 19th century British accent.
Still, I suppose I can't help but look back and giggle a little.
I know British Fu.

Ugh!

@brandydeshayzer Oldman nailed it. Drac is supposed to be over the top, and Oldman absolutely was perfect for it as shown.

Winona and Anthony Hopkins are ridiculous as well here

keanu's accent upgraded this movie from 'fucking awful' to 'so bad it's good'. He is literally the only entertaining thing on screen for the entire nine hour duration.
Also... B'yeeewdapest!

He's gotten better in his years. He's still not great by any standards, but he isn't THIS bad.

Even Anthony Hopkins sucked in this one.

@YouCantDeleteDenzelL
You're right,
But when Jonathan Harker first meets Dracula, he's described as being all in black, without a speck of color anywhere.

@linkieloos "his British accent could have been better" Seriously? Thats like saying "Hitler could have been nicer".
