Just so. And my latest advice (received today) from a native Dutchman is that it is only the commercial use of dog carts that is banned in that country. There is no law or regulation against the recreational use of dog sulkies - which makes a lot more sense than the views of our previous correspondent from that country.
I'm all for dogs getting the exercise they need, safely. You CANNOT FORCE a dog to pull. And if you like to bicker and profess your opinions, just go on the internet, LOL! I dog scooter, but have been off it for 2.5 mths due to an injury (mine). In the meantime my dog is going nuts for lack of exercise, apart from trotting daily on a treadmill. It seems that everyone has an opinion about everything, when online anonymously! I have better things to do with my time & intelligence than bicker here.
@TrustSnape242 He does a half hour every day and one to two hours a day on week ends. But, when he was younger (he is 8 now) he could go for 6 hours or so in new territory (with rest breaks). It is quite easy to tell from his attitude whether he wants to continue or not. He is a working dog breed (Giant Schnauzer) and you will generally find that working dogs like to have a job to do, especially when they enjoy the job as they do with carting.
this would be so great for my dog! I can't walk far enough for him to be satisfied. This way we can have our walk for my excersize, then hitch up and give him his exercise!
@KnightHawke01 I cart with my dog at 5:30 a.m. when there is very little traffic about, and walk with him at 4:30 p.m., when there is a fair bit of traffic. The difference is we go twice as far in the same time when we cart. And you're right - carting is a fulfilling exercise for both dog and driver.
Sorry, but poor dogs. Here, dogs pulling carts is forbidden for over hundred years. And looking at the clip, I'm glad. Such a big guy behind a dog. Why doesn't he buy a pony?
@Saartje05 One hundred years ago driving dogs was banned or very good reason - people abused dogs for commercial use and as horse substitutes (they also abused horses). Now, however, dog driving is purely recreational for dog and driver, and is done in vehicles of unprecedented lightness and comfort for both dog and driver. If in fact you care for the well-being of dogs, you would support the lifting or modification of such ancient laws in recognition of the dramatic change in usage.
@jimw43 And now grown up guys let themselves being pulled by a dog. You don't call that abuse? And I would NEVER EVER support changing that law, I can only hope people in your country wake up one day and forbid it too. Then again you live in a country that's fifty years behind, so that will probably take a while. (and yes, I know Australia, I have more family over there than I have here)
@Saartje05 We do have laws against dog abuse, but in this enlightened land we know that dog carting is not necessarily dog abuse. And before you get too carried away with how "advanced" the Netherlands is, bear in mind it is one of the few, if not the only, country in the world to publicly subsidize the setting up of a "clubhouse" by the Hell's Angels, who then used it as a base to spread their business of drugs and violence all over Europe. "People in glass houses . . . "
@jimw43 Think dumbo. HA won't leave, so we like to keep an eye on them, right there where we put them. Take that clubhouse away and you don't know where they are anymore, at least now they get arrested from to time. And you think you don't have Hells Angels in Australia? Try Sydney and Brisbane.
@Saartje05 I did NOT say, write or impute that we do NOT have the HA here. Indeed I made no reference whatever to the HA in Australia. All you need to do is read what I did write, rather than respond to statements that your prejudices lead you to think I wrote.
@jimw43 You were claiming something you read somewhere in the newspaper. Something that has NOTHING to do with carting dogs and something that isn't even true. So who's starting here?
@Saartje05 PLEASE quote eaxtly where I wrote that I had read of anything in a newspaper. If you are incapable of reading what I do write I can't see any point in continuing this discussion.
@jimw43 Same to you. Brain using adults wouldn't do this to their dogs. Come one now, a big guy driving a little cart behind his dog. HOw old are you? Three? Look at it, it's pathetic. And don't forget your helmet darling, you might fall off, LOLOL!! Btw, you do know dog can get overheated easily? Especially in that bloody hot weather you have over there. But hey, why care, as long as you can drive your little cart behind your schnauzer.
@Saartje05 Now, now, no need to be silly. Why don't you run along and play with the other children, and leave the big people to discuss matters they understand?
@jimw43 Why? Can't stand it someone is telling you you're wrong? Or did you suddenly realize it IS a bit weird for a big guy to do this? At your age. Talk about being a child. Did your little car broke down? Your dinky toy?
@Saartje05 Well because your prose is littered with non-sequiters and just plain nonsense. You think it is funny that people wear safety helmets on vehicles which have been known to travel at speeds in excess of 60 kph. You think all information comes from newspapers when here you are, writing on the internet, and ignoring books and television. In short, you appear to have the level of education and understanding typical of a child, that's why.
@jimw43 You're trying to tell someone from Holland about bicycles and safety, now that's funny. Most people don't wear helmets on their bikes, they're ok. We know how to cycle. And now, I don't think all info comes from newspapers, but you seem to think that all what's on the internet is the truth and that alone is very funny. And of course you would react like you do knowing you BEHAVE like a child. Carting with your doggie, something a kid would do, OR a old grown man having dementia
@Saartje05 Wrong again! I never mentioned bicycles, nor did I express any opinion about the truth of either the internet or any of the other media I mentioned. Can't you pay the least attention? Or are you just incapable of conducting a reasoned argument? On second thoughts, you've already demonstrated the latter. Go away kid, you're just making a fool of yourself.
@jimw43 You were talking about wearing helmets on vehicles. That includes bikes. You should know that. Or don't you know what 'vehicles' are? You're the biggest fool here old mate, wearing a helmet and driving a cart behind a overheated dog. Who's the fool here?
@Saartje05 I was talking about wearing helmets on sulkies, which does not include bikes. Look, you've had your say, so far I have not seen a single supporting post for your position. Clearly you're not getting anywhere, so just do yourself a favour and go away.
@jimw43 This is what you wrote 'You think it is funny that people wear safety helmets on vehicles'. VEHICLES. That includes bicycles, motorcycles and everything on wheels. And if you don't want reactions on your clips, then don't post.
@Saartje05 The vehicles under discussion are dog carts. They are what this whole thread is about. But in any event. whether it be dog carts or bicycles, the wearing of a safety helmet is simply good sense, as evidenced by the fact that all racing cyclists seem to wear them.
@jimw43 Lol. I just googled Hells Angels Australia and oh what a surprise. Not only HA are there but many dangerous bike 'clubs' that are violent and kill eachother regularly.
Recent Australian Crime intelligence reckon 3500 fully patched members represent more than 35 clubs. A source claims there are nearly 20,000 associates and nominees.
So they know. Why aren't they arrested? Btw, that subsidizing story is totally different than what is written in some newspapers.
@Saartje05 Simply because buying a pony would do nothing for the DOG'S health and well-being. The DOG enjoys carting and it is one of the prime reasons he is as healthy and well-balanced as he is. A hundred years ago automobiles had to be preceded by a man carrying a red flag. Times change, please recognize the new reality.
@Saartje05 Wrong. Times have changed and these days many people own working dogs which are miserable because they get insufficient exercise. Have you ever been to a dry land mushing event with sled dogs and witnessed the transcendent joy of the dogs when they get to pull, or the utter misery of those who get left behind?
You really need to learn more about this activity before you let your prejudices rule your thoughts.
@Saartje05 Sorry to disappoint you, but I have done something over 8,000 kilometers in the cart so far, including in front of groups of police, and have never been arrested, most likely because what I am doing is not illegal and even the intellectually challenged can see that the dog is enjoying himself. In fact, before I even built the carts, I checked with the RSPCA which could see only positives for dog and owner. Where is "here" incidentally? The Land of Smiles :-)
@jimw43 HERE it's illegal. I'm in the Netherlands. ONLY malamutes or huskies are allowed to pull and only with a special permitt. And then only full bred, no mixed breed. There is a reason it's forbidden. You maybe mean well, many don't and miss use the fact dogs are allowed to pull. IT's forbidden here for almost a hundred years.
@jimw43 In many countries in Europe it's not allowed btw, not only where I live. And I totally support that. And yes, you can call it the land of smiles.
@Saartje05 I doubt that you'd call the Netherlands, "The Land of Smiles" if you were at all familiar with the Operetta by Franz Lehar of the same name :-)
wow, this is awesome! lol I would defintly get one if I had the money :P great excercise for the dog, I still think its good that I dont have the money since I could use the exercise as well haha
@yuropod A car won't exercise your dog, nor give you as much enjoyment, and a car for $3k is going to be much less reliable, require much greater running costs and cause more vastly more pollution. But I guess you had some sort of point in mind?
And before you accuse others of mental retardation, be aware of the old saying regarding people in glass houses.
Just so. And my latest advice (received today) from a native Dutchman is that it is only the commercial use of dog carts that is banned in that country.
