Hey guys, if you like alternative/ progressive/ experimental rock, please go listen to our first single "The Second Void" and give us a comment about our music.
"Above all they stand, vigilance everlasting. Beholden the murk yet contentious of the glow. Night is the new day" The Pilgrim's Path, Darkness Returns, final Thieves Guild quest, Nydstrom's diary;-)
If you follow the Thieves Guild questline until the Nightingale quests pop up, you are supposed to bring the Skeleton Key to a room. On your way (Pilgrim's Path/Twilight Sepulcher) to that room there will be two skeletons named "Anders" and "Nystrom". There's also a journal that refers to Katatonia (Nystrom's Journal).
@Tie4821 470k views over the 3 years this video has been on this site, which just so happens to get over 1 billion hits every single day. So mainstream.
Heard these guys at the Opeth San Diego concert in October. This song caught my attention a bit back at the concert so I looked it up again, After hearing it like 10 more times, this is fucking incredible.
Saw em last night...was extremely impressed. Their performance was a lot deeper than the album suggests it could be. Only one song I wasn't familiar with, and the crowd was really getting into it...amazing show with Opeth.
It took some getting use to, but this is now a top 3 katatonia album for me. I hope to hear more like this from them in the future. Maybe Scion will throw 10grand at them to make an EP. I would love to have more.
Thats difficult to answer cuz Katatonia has gone through quite a few changes over the years. Their first two albums were death metal. Considering your listening to forsaker, I'd stay away from those two for now. From their death phase they moved into a melodic doom style with a slight emo twist. They are now, still doom, but with a lot of beauty, harmoizing vocals and slightly more mainstream. Start with The Great Cold Distance and work back and forward at the same time.
@AssChavez I agree with this almost fully. Though personally I'd switch Discouraged Ones with NitND, and replace Last Fair Deal with their '92 Revival EP.
The first six seconds bring me shivers every time I hear it.. always reminds me of the day when the preordered copy of NitND arrived to my place and I started to listen to this...
@raven66614 Try the second album of Katatonia for some "strong" doom, Draconian for some "goth" doom, Candlemass for some "oldschool" doom, and you could as well check Agalloch.
@jek21 Lolwut? None of these bands sound even remotely like Katatonia. Vitus, Sleep, The Melvins, and Yob are still great though, but whole other genres. You may as well be recommending someone who wants bands similar to Aqua, a rapper like P.Diddy :p
1) Swallow the Sun (Hope, New Moon, and Morning Never Came)
2) Draconian (The Burning Halo and Turning Seasons Within)
3) Funeral (From These Wounds)
4) Shape of Despair (Shape of...)
5) Ahab (Wretched Sea)
Swallow the Sun is amazing and so is Draconian. You cant go wrong with that funeral album. Start with those three bands, you will not be disapointed, I promise.
@AssChavez OK dude, I owe you one. I didn't know Funeral and your comment made me check them out. Can't thank you enough, From These Wounds is an awesome album, it's been in my car for over a month... Thanks for bringing it up!
Well, you own funeral's masterpiece. Their other albums just don't amout to From These Wounds. Most doom metal has rather harsh vocals. If you like the doom style without the harsh vocals try the band virgin black. However, there were 2 doom metal bands i mentioned before that you still must check out: Draconian and Swallow the Sun. Awesome song. Sounds like a gothic doom metal band than anything else. but beautiful in a dark way. Katatonia just takes your breath away. Thanks for uploading.

Thank you for being one of the few people who seem to agree on their genre fitting that descrption. Too often their desrcibed as "Depressive Rock" (Not a real genre) "Dark Metal" (Actually a subform of Melodic Black Metal" or "Alternative Metal" (Perhaps, but this underplays their roots and connection to Doom and Gothic Metal)
I personally throw in Progressive Metal as well but that's more debatable.
The song is about the sacrifices of personal freedom and individuality we make during times of great conflict. An abuse of power within, a vague threat from beyond. These factors force a fearful public to fall in line and silence their inner dissent for the purpose of not weakening the greater whole. "Forget personal growth, or follwing your dreams. You are now a cog in the machine. It's the only way. Forsake whatever ideals you held to be true."
@choptop1218 That Katatonia is fucking awesome isn't it? I was like you; I hadn't heard anything about their new album. Then I stumbled upon some reviews that said "it's killer". I downloaded it (w/o even listening to any of the songs). Went to bed with headphones on and THIS is the first song I heard. Needless to say I was fucking BLOWN AWAY.
@MyEmpiresDoom I know right? I mean my last impression of Katatonia was The Great Cold Distance and Viva Emptiness and then first track off of this album..Fucking Bam! Awesome. They did a really great job composing, writing both melodic and heavy riffs together. A great album all around.
@dinoman89 Anyone who even uses the word deathcore in any relation to Katatonia is a moron. Breakdowns are not inherently bad, it's just that generic deathcore bands strive for them in place of solid songwriting. If we are to so narrowly call anything with groove a "breakdown", then kids, this song is how you do one properly.
poem i hope ou like it Mirrors on fire My images are opaque Wings of razor I bleed each time I reach for the sky I turned the sky into stone The altar of my anguish The stars my bleeding wrists Under their dust I spread my wings This constant pain Is keeping me discolored
I heard of Renske from his vocals on Ayreon's newest album.. I thought he was great there, but holy crap, he's great here too. This is a really great song :v
Hey everybody! I just released my solo album "Mirror Image" that contains electronic upbeat and ambient songs heavily inspired by Katatonia and the music of Anders Nystrom and Jonas Renkse (including October Tide and Diabolical Masquerade). If you're interested you can check out the songs on my youtube page, and links to my myspace page and places to download the full album are on my youtube channel as well :) .
I love these guys for the fact that they don't need to be "rip your face off" heavy with the instruments to have an awesome song. Thats not their style but whe they do dial up the intruments abit more...like in this song...they sound even better. I think is actually the heaviest song from Katatonia. idk i only have this album. Katatonia is a Grade A band none the less tho
@GutsandGlory45 youve obviously never listened to old school katatonia. they were one of the best doom metal bands of the 90s, they used to sound nothing like this. Althought this is good in its own way, it doesn't compare to the classics. I suggest listening to the Brave Murder Day and Dance of December Souls albums. Although personally I prefer the Sounds of Decay EP the most.
@MrselfDstruct9 I agree with you for the most part GutsandGlory45, however, aside from the fact that Katatonia have metamorphisized over the years, I truly believe Viva Emptiness and The Great Cold Distance to be their stand out releases....doom, death, or otherwise metal considered
Best rockband ever...that used to be gloom metal...that next to nobody has heard of....I REALLY love these guys though. I'm getting the new album ASAP.
Damn it! I can not get this song out of my head. I'm mumbling it all day. Even if I used a butcher's knife to carve it out of my mind, it would remain. And I fucking love that.
Master piece.

when i heard the first riff i said "Ho fuck they became a deathcore band!"
haha

@PiErRe6363 Deathcore or not- The intro fucking rocked! \m/
dinoman89 1 year ago
@dinoman89 Anyone who even uses the word deathcore in any relation to Katatonia is a moron. Breakdowns are not inherently bad, it's just that generic deathcore bands strive for them in place of solid songwriting. If we are to so narrowly call anything with groove a "breakdown", then kids, this song is how you do one properly.

Holy crap

Damn it! I can not get this song out of my head. I'm mumbling it all day. Even if I used a butcher's knife to carve it out of my mind, it would remain. And I fucking love that.

hard to believe he is the bassist of bloodbath, he is multi talented, and he was the original drummer when Mike from Opeth was in here. He is good!
