Second, I own a small commercial gas turbine, mounted on a bell 204b helicopter.

Running a generator with a gas turbine is not only nothing new, it is the normal mode of operation of both the APU of quite a few aircraft as well as the "Ground start cart" that you will find at airports around the world.

As the APU has a given service life they are rebuild only as the airframe is in service, finding a used one is easy.

@snakev10v5 From the looks of it that's a Whittle W.1, which only generates about 800 pounds of thrust, which is about what a handbrake handles when your car is parked on a slight downhill. 747 engines have about 60,000 pounds of thrust. each. It's pretty shitty.

Would you be able to use electricity produced from a small turbine/generator to make hydrogen gas to use as fuel? If yes, would there be any electricity left over to charge batteries?

@sirtom68 You could use electricity from the turbine to produce hydrogen but it would be a waste of energy. It would be way more efficient to use the electricity to drive a motor directly than to convert water in to hydrogen and then burn it to produce power. In the absence of very cheap, very clean power the 'hydrogen economy' is just smoke and mirrors.

Would there be enough electricity left to charge batteries? Well that depends on the generator and the batteries but if you were designing a whole system it would make sense to have a battery pack in the set up. Including batteries would allow the turbine to operate at a fixed speed where it is most efficient. When going down hill the turbine can charge the batteries and when going up hill the batteries can discharge giving a bit more oomph. Does that make sense?

If you did build a small power station using a turbo charger as the engine, could you charge a large number of deep cycle batteries with it in a short time? Or would it take all day and $200 dollars worth of fuel? Im curious as to how much torque those little turbine engines can make.
