No its not "just" melting. Water is one of the few substances that has a negative liquid/solid boundary on its phase diagram. Objecting water to high pressure therefore lowers the melting point and makes it melt faster. if one try the same experiment on dry ice ( co2) which has a positive liquid/solid boundary the increased pressure will actually make the dry ice less able do sublimate at the place of the wire because of the exceeding pressure. Good experiment if one knows the science behind it.
