Uncle Bobby and his crew were precision mechanics with their cues, but about as passionate with their script as Rain Man was with "Who's On First". By this airing, I don't think this show meant a thing to him or his viewers.
My friends wanted to get UNCLE BOBBY for my 30th birthday (!!!) and the one that was talking with him was saying "Sorry D, We tried to get Uncle Bobby for your birthday, but he is a very very mean man" - lol
OMG! LMAO! I used to watch this all the time, and now I see how fucked up it was. HAHAHA. He was an alchoholic. He once drove our school bus for some promo thingy (community service??), and he was SO RUDE,and swore and stunk like booze. LOLOL. It's all acoming back to me now. I'm afraid to sleep. AHAHAAHA
There were a lot of heavy drinkers at CFTO in that era. Something about phoney arrogant Brits that take Toronto by storm...they are still in aw.e of Chris Robinson on CFRB
You know you're old when it's strange seeing this in colour...when you remember it in B&W on the Philco or the Marconi television...Thanks for posting!
@blthtm I saw him at Square One in Missisauga when I was a kid. He was doing magic tricks, and when the kid he'd chosen from the audience guessed how the trick worked, he cussed the kid out in front of the whole crowd. Things came to a pretty quick halt after that.
I was in the audience of the Uncle Bobby show when I was 5. That was in 1969 and I still remember sitting there and looking up at all the bright lights. I remember thinking that he had a funny accent!
I lived in Scarborough also and remember kids saying he drove a school bus.
I used to watch this show during lunch time on the weekdays but now that I am seeing this...wow its creeping me out! lol What the hell was I thinking back then??? Maybe its the clown? the weird laughter? the weird little dolls? I hope I dont get nightmares tonight!! rofl!!!
I grew up watching this. Thank you for posting it. I never met him but saw him drive a school bus. I live in Scarborough. I liked the show and he brought a lot of smiles to children including me. Thank you Uncle Bobby for all you have done to entertain us. Your shows was special to me. Best Wishes, Vincent.
My 7th grade teacher said his brother loved this show and saw Uncle bobby driving his school bus when he was in 2nd grade. He was like "Wow Uncle Bobby?!?! What are you doing driving our school bus!?!?"
and Uncle Bobby was like "I'm doing this for money kid! Now get to the back of the bus you slow brat!"
LoI I don't know how the class lead him to show the video and talk about this. XD
This is where my fear of clowns comes from & why i wouldent eat ice cream drumsticks cause i thought creapy little people were in them. rite after the bimbo part of the show it did mean time to head back to school with those weird little voices singing that tune stuck in my head.lol, The only clown I could tolerate afther this show was Gurgals the clown mascot of Sussex pop, went good with Humpty Dumpty chips
He was my Uncle.. My actual uncle, I'm from the UK and he moved out to Canada to pursue his career, he was an amazing person.. We lost him a few years ago to a heart attack :( nice to see support still though, he was a bit of a nutter ;) Ahaa!
@joeblowthehot That's what my mom said. He does appear to be drunk here and he didn't like kids which just begs the question: why would you be the host of children's show if you don't like kids?
Thank you for posting the clip for this Classic Canadian TV Show. I use to watch this growing up. CTV in Toronto is celebrating their 50 th anniversary and they have been talking about shows that have been on their station over the years. That's what lead me to search for any clips on youtube. Today they showed a picture of Bimbo from The Uncle Bobby Show and I couldn't remember the character but when I saw the name Bimbo the song came to my head. Bimbo Bimbo on the Uncle Bobby Show....
this was like watching a car wreck way back when, hard to look away...
i remember there was a lady who did stories from play-dough, is that from the show? and i heard that he got canned because he showed up drunk one day, is that true?
thanks for the flashback from the vcr archives, lol.
Uncle Booby just died a year or so ago, I read an article about him in the ACTRA magazine. An iconic show, though I never really understood it asa a kid.
I used to watch this as a kid in the 70's, but I couldn't remember a thing about it, until I heard that Bimbo song, and it all came flooding back. Bimbo! hahahah. It really does all look pretty creepy now.
@mpwall123 I probably wouldn't have noticed if he was drunk. My mother remembers that Bimbo used to scare her. :( I never wanted to put my things away at all. :(
@nuklz That's what my mother says. He definitely appears to be drunk here. :( I think I was more scared of him than I was scared of Bimbo The Birthday Clown. :)
I was just thinking of all the kid's shows I used to watch way back when...and thinking how truly disturbing this show was...I hope my nightmares don't come back!
I am from NF, NY and remember this silly cheesy Kids show in the 70's when My brothers and I were growing up.. They used to have a cartoon of the Wizard Of Oz .. I forgot the correct Title of that cartoon. Also anyone remember The show on CHCH TV 11, called The Hilarious of Frightenstein? I found some of the shows On DVD thru Amazon.com. These shows certainly are a balst from this guy's past...a
Uncle Bobby lived down the street from me and all us kids in the neighbourhood would hang around the local plaza when he was there hoping to get him to say, "Hello, hello, hello!" Unfortunately, he hated kids and would always say (more or less), "Get lost, you brats!" Good times.
@blthtm You know even as a kid, I knew this was drek and Uncle Bobby HAD to have been drunk most of the time. My favorite was Alcia the Squirrel who seemed not to understand this show was crap and played it too seriously. A wasted Canadian childhood spent in front of the tv set. Aww, the good old days!
This would be so much better after a joint, wouldn't it? I remember this show and never could make sense of the birthday section with the clown and the falling puppets on strings.
Nobody in my family would believe me that this show existed. I told them about all these crazy characters Bimbo and those dolls on a string. Thanks to You Tube I can proven all wrong!
Oh HELP. I always HATED UNLE BOBBY - he looks like Dennis Hopper and scared the heck outta me when I was a kid. LISTEN TO THE BIMBO SONG that is SCAREEEEEEE. HORRIBLE. I STILL have nightmares about this show. ARGHHHH!
@CptMystery Yeah!!!!! I couldn't read the clock but I knew that when Bimbo came out I had to go to Kindergarten. I thought I was the only one with that memory! lol
Thank you for putting this on. I have never even thought of this since I was a kid. Like the other viewer, I used to watch the Flinstones and then Uncle Bobby. Even at 9 years old I thoyght he was corny, but I always watched.
Does anyone recall Your Old Pal Big Al. I would love to see that again. I was on The Big Al show in the afternoon. He also used to show Warner Bros. Cartoons at non and was on CKCO TV in Kitchener.
OMFG!! Every day for 6 years the Flintstones and Uncle Bobby at lunch then back to school . Even when I was 6years old I wanted to tell those puppets to fuck themselves when they told me to have a good day even if it wasn't my birthday. My father drank with Uncle Bobby often! but he was never allowed in our house.
OMG!! What a blast from the past and the deep recesses of my mind! IThis is some pretty f'd up shit! Creepy and disturbing really lol Where is the b'day girl from Pickering Ontario? Likely in therapy. lol
I remember sneaking quick views of this because I knew my dad didn't want me to watch it, but I never knew why.
I guess it'e because he didn't want me watching someone obviously drunk. I remember 1 episode where Uncle Bobby was being threatened by pirates, and that terrified me.
I've never seen a packet of Humpty Dumpty potato chips, but they were ALL OVER that program.
As the young kids say elle oh elle exclamation. What a blast from the past! I'm a 70's child and the name of my first dog when I was probably three or four years old was Bimbo! Still remember that song and those little puppets but the rest of the show is a blur.
Oh my God, I have been reading all the comments and literally holding my chest from laughter. And they wonder why so many comedians are from Canada? Jim Carrey must have grown up watching this...our weird tv heritage along with our weird politics, cultural and identity challenges has produced generations of people who have become funny just to survive. I always thought the forced kissing between the clowns was weird. Isn't the picker girl the same woman who used to play a human squirrel?Merci
@sasquatchdrumbeat that's right on! I was one of those lucky kids. Extremely witty 'off-the-wall' shows and cartoons ... over and over and over again.
The pre-Sesame Street world: The New Adventures of Pinnochio, Tales of the Wizard of Oz, Davey and Goliath, Chez Helene, Tiny Talent Time, Hilarious House of Frightenstein, etc.
I e-mailed another Happy's friend.... Cy Leonard the ventriloquist, who said that when I wrote him, Uncle Bobby was alive and well and living at his cottage in Kirkland Lake.
I had blocked this show from memory until now.. lol .. thanks so much.. very funny, I'm embarrassed to have watched this as a kid, what crap, they really do look like drunks.. haha
You know, even as a kid I had a hunch the Uncle and his gals must have been spending A LOT of time at the bar. An embarassment for Canadian tv and THAT says a lot.
I'm reliving a nightmare from my childhood. Thank you, whoever you are, for posting this repressed memory from the darkest chasms of my mind, which there had been safely locked away forever... or so I thought.
Oh. My. GOD! Thirty years of therapy erased in two minutes. This clown scared the unholy hell out of me when I was a kid. I'd have nightmares. It got so I was sure I'd imagined it, but here it is again. I don't know if I should thank you or go curl up with my teddy bear and weep.
Sigh... I'll go with the first option. Thanks for the memories. My psychologist will be in touch. ;)
I hazily remember Uncle Bobby from my childhood and Bimbo the Clown and those cute little knitted puppets. I loved it, especially when they'd read the letters from kids all across Canada. It wasn't sophisticated, but it was fun!
I wonder where little Janet Huff of Pickering, Ontario is today..... :-)
Great moments from 9 Channel Nine Court....old Uncle Bobby could down the Guinness with the best of them. The mailing address for CTV hasn't changed to this day...Still Box 9, Station O, Toronto.
What a trip. Have a happy day, even if you didn't have a birthday. Being from Buffalo, I got to view a lot of Canadian TV. I used to sit in front of the tv recording this show with my cassette recorder and playing it back in fast and slow motion I about wet myself laughing.
Wow I'm 5 again! My American friends think Mr.Rogers is everything, but we had Uncle Bobby, Friendly Giant and Mr. Dressup. I believe we win this one! lol
A little piece of trivia, bionicgforcecoffee: Mister Rogers actually hosted a kids' program on the CBC for a few seasons in the early 1960s. Mr. Dressup and Friendly Giant were also Americans, but stayed here while Fred Rogers returned to the States, going on to a long run with his Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Let's just say that it's a draw between Canada and the United States here when it comes to kiddie shows from our generation.
I have to admit, though, that I preferred the Canadianized Sesame Street over the one that aired on PBS. I only saw so many episodes of The Electric Company. (HEY, YOU GUYS! IT'S BACK!) And I absolutely hated The New Zoo Revue. But I liked Mister Rogers and a whole slew of other kiddie shows - and I didn't care whether they were Canadian or American for the most part.
- From Wikipedia - 'He did not earn very much from the show and had to support himself by moonlighting as a school bus driver in Scarborough, Ontario.'
-- Y'know, for all his detractors, if as a kid, I'd had Uncle Bobby as my school bus driver, I'd probably have thought it cool.
I had him as my school bus driver for one school trip in the mid 70s. The teacher got his autograph and xeroxed it (as it as called back then), but I don't remember what happened to my copy. It was a small program, so it's understandable he didn't make a whole lot of money from this show. RIP.
does anybody know where i can get Archives (early 1960 ) of the show ? i was in the St. Catherines children aid society and remember going on "The uncle bobby show " for families looking to adopt....is that possible?
Officer John came to our class in public school. I remember Uncle Bobby seemed unhappy a lot of the time (hungover maybe?) I don't know but I did watch him and the Flintstones when I came home for lunch.
Uncle Bobby and his crew were precision mechanics with their cues, but about as passionate with their script as Rain Man was with "Who's On First". By this airing, I don't think this show meant a thing to him or his viewers.

Bimbo the birthday clown scared the snot out of me. And those puppets were so hideous. I watched in shock and awe at this show when I was a kid.

Oh HELP. I always HATED UNLE BOBBY - he looks like Dennis Hopper and scared the heck outta me when I was a kid. LISTEN TO THE BIMBO SONG that is SCAREEEEEEE. HORRIBLE. I STILL have nightmares about this show. ARGHHHH!

Those puppets coming out of the sky always freaked me out. Plus it signaled the dismal fact I had to go to school...

If you were at the Agincourt Mall beer store at the right time in the afternoom, you'd always see Uncle Bobby picking up his nightly six pack :o)

Isn't the picker girl the same woman who used to play a human squirrel?Merci
sasquatchdrumbeat 2 years ago
@sasquatchdrumbeat that's right on! I was one of those lucky kids. Extremely witty 'off-the-wall' shows and cartoons ... over and over and over again.
The pre-Sesame Street world: The New Adventures of Pinnochio, Tales of the Wizard of Oz, Davey and Goliath, Chez Helene, Tiny Talent Time, Hilarious House of Frightenstein, etc.

Dressup. I believe we win this one! lol
bionicgforcecoffee 2 years ago 2
A little piece of trivia, bionicgforcecoffee: Mister Rogers actually hosted a kids' program on the CBC for a few seasons in the early 1960s. Mr. Dressup and Friendly Giant were also Americans, but stayed here while Fred Rogers returned to the States, going on to a long run with his Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Let's just say that it's a draw between Canada and the United States here when it comes to kiddie shows from our generation.
markojameow 2 years ago
I have to admit, though, that I preferred the Canadianized Sesame Street over the one that aired on PBS. I only saw so many episodes of The Electric Company. (HEY, YOU GUYS! IT'S BACK!) And I absolutely hated The New Zoo Revue. But I liked Mister Rogers and a whole slew of other kiddie shows - and I didn't care whether they were Canadian or American for the most part.

Re: "Uncle Bobby" Ash
- From Wikipedia - 'He did not earn very much from the show and had to support himself by moonlighting as a school bus driver in Scarborough, Ontario.'
-- Y'know, for all his detractors, if as a kid, I'd had Uncle Bobby as my school bus driver, I'd probably have thought it cool.
cyberwanderer 2 years ago
I had him as my school bus driver for one school trip in the mid 70s. The teacher got his autograph and xeroxed it (as it as called back then), but I don't remember what happened to my copy. It was a small program, so it's understandable he didn't make a whole lot of money from this show. RIP.

Officer John came to our class in public school. I remember Uncle Bobby seemed unhappy a lot of the time (hungover maybe?) I don't know but I did watch him and the Flintstones when I came home for lunch.
