Just got back from a 4-week trip to Thailand. Among other things, loved the food, both in restaurants and on the street, and I never got ill once.

I would love to go back.

@TimeGents Glad you had a great time. Am actually here in Bangkok for a couple of days, again. Yes, the food in Thailand is quite safe, provided you avoid the obviously fly-laden stuff sitting in the heat for hours. Thai cuisine in general is spectacular and cheap.

@umarket Fortunately, most of the food stalls I encountered were quite sound. I wonder how it must be in the neighbouring countries, which I did not get a chance to visit. Next time I go to South-East Asia, I will try to take a few months to travel in the entire region.

@TimeGents We can tell you from experience that eating on the street in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Burma (Myanmar), Malaysia were all relatively safe and sound. i miss the ice cream truck music!!! every since i in singapore right now but going back soon when my school hoilday start i miss it so much when i am in changimai the ice cream truck will always visit each of the house and will alway drive past whenever i hear i would rush and stop it and i was thinking of spending only 50B for 2-3 Ice cream but end up buy 10 -.-lll haha

Thai street food is unhygienic(they leave the meat or sea food open air without cover sometimes you can see flies flying around) I got bad stomach most of the time if I eat the street food. Thai food add too much MSG, salt and oil,Thai cakes,coffee,tea are too sweet! More healthier Thai food is Thai salad, like papaya salad, spicy grilled pork salad etc.. they are really delicious! This is mine and my husband's personal opinion about Thai food!

Wow, that's too bad. I'm surprised. I heard that Thais often use a lot of preservatives. We ate extensively on the street and stayed pretty healthy. That said, we didn't eat a lot of sweets (though mango and sticky rice and roti were favorites) and stayed away from deep fried bits. The salads and greens are definitely the way to go to balance some of the fat. If you visit our website uncorneredmarket - we wrote a lot about Thai food, particularly in Krabi, where it was terrific.

Tata996... I am sure Thai food can be healthy but Thai food street aren't so healthy because they normally use cheaper ingredients for cooking. I've been to good Thai restaurants and street stalls I felt proper restaurant served much healthier and hygienic food . Thai street food can be very delicious but for many foreigners that not use to street food they can get bad stomach. Also not every one like Thai food because there are many delicious cuisines apart from Thai food

Maybe you should read things completely. I never stated or suggested that street food is hygenic. There are different levels of hygeine in either restaurant or food stall... I have only gotten sick once from eating street food and I've eaten it probably 40 times total. You have to be smarter and know which vendors to eat from.

And, yes- coloring often comes from plants.

MSG is not bad, in moderation.

Nothing personal, but educate yourself on a subject before spewing misinformation.

@sharonscw You do realize that being TOO clean is making people sick? People are not being exposed to enough germs so they are losing immunity to them. If you lived in a sterile environment all your life, a single cold germ can kill you if you leave it. That's why people get sick from eating Thai street food, because they've lost immunity to bacteria that normally wouldn't cause serious harm in people. It really has little to do with the food being unhygienic.

Here's my opinion on the matter. i think Thai food is healthy in general, they eat more vegetables then meat unlike westerners. The street food is mainly in the Banglamphu neighborhood of Bangkok, not far from Khao San road, but distinctly different than Khao San.

The store is on Chakrapong Rd., I believe.

The dog in tonight's curry reference was a joke. I know that the northern Vietnamese eat dog (there's actually a street full of dogmeat restaurants in Hanoi). The Chinese do too. China is where we are traveling now, so maybe we can confirm our suspicions.

I wish there was more street food and late night eating in the States, too. Someday maybe.

Thais don't eat dog meat? It's just less widespread here than some other parts of Asia. While many Thais would never think of it, Sakonakon in the northeast is famous for a market specializing in dog meat. I know tons of people who have eaten dog meat too. I've even been told that I ate it once (when I thought I was eating cow meat), but I'll never know for sure. It's called "neua sawan," or "heavenly beef."
