he's making it sound more ominous by playing 6th note bends on the whammy, which is like a wah that sounds like a slide. the guitar part is very simple, he just knows where things fit now. it's heavy and it's loud but (thank god) it's still those catchy riffs, just slathered in harmonies to make it instantly rip you. it's all concise and it is great guitar rock, but i think tongue is firmly in cheek.  the real trick is making ear candy out of those short little songs without cluttering them.
