I always liked to think that some aspects of the show's battles handled things more realistically. Yes, a Golem is rock and ground and therefore has 4x the weakness against grass, but if viewed outside of the gaming logic, I don't see how Golem's thick hide would suffer any major damage from a few little vine slaps...

Those were two separate scenes; the point of the episode was to defeat a Hitmonchan. A Hitmonlee was also entered in the competition, and that's when Geodude got owned.

@MrHaseo14 As a matter of fact, in the games, the GS ball was originally supposed to be a key item in encountering Celebi in the Gold, Silver, and Crystal games. I believe that the GS ball event was disabled for the american release, but it could be activated with the use of a gameshark.
