  • I met Keith (and the rest of the guys) in Buffalo,NY at the McDonald's at Niagara Falls Blvd. & Maple after The Who concert at Melody Fair in the late '60's. He was/is hilarious! We would have had them over for a beer at a good friend's house, but they had to catch a plane.

  • bloody hell ... this was keith when he wasn't at all in the best shape of his life - probably the worst ... and he stills manages to blow my mind... genius ... he plays his heart out and gives it everything he's got till there's nothing left... literally till the end and ultimately the end of him ...... jesus this man !! o.o

  • Remember this was Keith at the end of his life, and just a shadow of his former drumming self...he had an awful time even getting through the Who Are You sessions, just too far gone (and that's from Townshend himself). Imagine seeing Keith drumming in 1966...a friggin' machine!!!

  • man i thought bonham and moon drowned in a giant bass drum full of booze,im a drummer and thats the way i wanna go..,or the enthwhistle way would be better..couple of hookers and a bag of coke.

  • those drums better be 18

  • Keith was an worse alcoholic and drug user than John Bonhan

    Bobham died,

    So did Keith,

    Or gods are mortal.

  • @timepope the difference is bonham died in a plane crash.

  • @drewlsy bonham died in his sleep - alcohol

  • @jdrum12 NO WAY, REALLY? I guess they both did then, without Wiki'ing it - I'll take your word for it. I don't know why I thought he died in a plane crash or car crash. John Bonham the led Zeppelin drummer, right? moon dies in his sleep for sure, I know that.

  • @drewlsy Check out Bonham in wikipedia. Under "death" it explains the whole day of his death where he was drinking heavily all day then fell asleep. He died by inhaling his own vomit - asphyxiation

  • Pretty sloopy for a lush....love that u can hear him screaming on fills near the end...

  • he did play it with the band but the realesed version isnt keith

  • this song was recorded right after keith died look it up

  • @angelacevedo2112

no this was before keith died

who are you was his last album

  • why does this have so many hits

  • @pokeher26 Because people think it a keith moon isolated track.

  • @1Sifting

    this is Keith's actually playing

    ripped straight from the masters

  • Not Keith.

  • @konadrummer yes it is.... omg

  • @konadrummer

    yes it is

  • Hal oh forget it just pathetic.

  • This is someone playing Keith's part.

  • @MadHighway

    this is keith

  • @H1GhVoL7aGe

Doesn't synch up with the actual track.

  • @MadHighway depends on which version of Who Are You you have the extended album has 2 separate versions including a lost mix which has a completely different verse. the greatest hits album has the radio friendly version which says hell instead of fuck and its about a min shorter.

  • la video n'est pas synchrone?

  • @Soudainable Pas tout le temps, c'est le clip...

  • omg. keith moon is GOD!

  • This song was not a cover for the game. It was released, along with many other Who songs, in a DLC pack using the original masters. I have no idea where you got this info from, but it's absolute bullshit.

  • this isn't keith

  • @dnm5555

yes it is, for sure ;)

  • @andreao1990 The drums and cymbals sound different and the rolls are different. It's been recreated by another drumer for a game I think.

  • @dnm5555

They sound different from what? They're exactly as they are in the record, listen more carefully ;)

And actually, this is for sure Keith's last years' style... no one can "recreate" it.

The drumming is always changing, not following a path, and never repeats itself... and for the sound, well you can do miracles with mixing ;)

  • best rock drummer of all time, Keith Moon. RIP

  • What u hear is from the album (who are you), and not the video, if u know what i mean....

  • any real fan knows this is just a drummer paid to cover the drums for the game...

  • @mcrelly its too on time.

  • @nofxrulez1 entwisle told him to do this

  • @mcrelly

A couple of the tracks are covers and they say so. 99% are the master tracks from the studio.

  • That ain't Keef. Someone's dubbed a track to try to keep up with him. First, there's no studio isolation sufficient to lose Pete or John. Secondly look at the ride and crash hits. Way out of whack. Not bad drumming, but not Mr Moon.

  • @LWDNKUMUS The clip is from the Kids are Alright DVD and is genuine, you can hear John and Pete. The video is lightly out of sync though.

  • The Hendrix of the kit- he had and still has; no peer! Words cannot really describe his genius and he drove the Who to the top. I remember watching them perform at the San Diego Sports Arena when Keith passed out and fell off the stool Daltrey asked for a drummer in the- crowd and plucked a guy who raised his hand. He did a passable job, considering who he was filling in for. Townshend promised to pay the guy but he never did but what a story to tell his Grandkids!

  • Keith Moon used a hi hat?

  • @njbc420 he did use the high hat on the who are you album

  • Its shamanism

  • he's not absolutely precise : and that's the magic ! love his voice while playing

  • THE F--KING BEST

  • wow for a split second when john, pete, and keith are at the mic he looks exactly like steve carell lol

  • Just with the drum solo I could never pick it is this song.

  • John was the anchor. The Who died with Keef, and really died with John.

  • I doubt this is Moon playing.

  • @misterfun54 If this isn't Keith playing (which it obviously is) than whoever it is nailed it.

  • @misterfun54 It is. The drum tracks come from Rock Band. This is an original.

  • This is proof of how Mitch Mitchell has always been better than Keith Moon. Listen Are You Experienced, Axis Bold of love, Electric ladyland ou Live at Monterey Pop Festival...

  • happy 65th birthday keith and best wishes up there

  • I think his timing was sort of inconsistent for the most part but he did a lot of interesting things that not many drummers did at the time. He also didn't fall into drummer traps that many other drummers these days fall into. By that I mean, he had a good ear so evening out his kicks and fills didn't matter to him as long as he made it sound musical. Sorry for the tl;dr.

  • keith is like the ace frehley of drummers, or visa-versa.

short on skills but LOOOOOOOOOONG on charisma and cool.

  • Keith had a unique, chaotic sense of timing that no drummer has ever been able to recreate. I completely disagree with anyone who says he was a "poor drummer". Complete nonsense. Drumming is not just about who has the best technical skill, it's about having the heart and the ability to tell a story with an instrument that has no melody of its own. Keith always told a story with his drumming, and the only other drummer I think who had a very similar ability was Mitch Mitchell.

  • @hippiehighpriestess

yea i mean no one could land a drum fill like moonie. and i mean no one... haha

  • Love how you can hear him yelling

  • Btw he never practiced

  • haha I was asking myself the same thing does he have tape to hold the headphones on because he's so animated when he plays? that's hysterical if that's the case

  • is that electrical tape to keep the headphones on?

  • NICE!

  • I've always been a fan of Keith Moon, and he's one of my favorites, but he wasn't the world's best drummer. He was a bit one-dimensional, but it was HIS dimension. No one played like him, and he wouldn't have done well in other situations, but he was the perfect drummer for The Who, and was every bit a part of their signature sound and style. It's a shame he died so early.

  • @governorgilf I disagree world's greatest rock drummer. You just gotta watch the whole live at Isle of Wight concert there was nobody in his class in 1970.

  • nice

  • I love how you can hear him screaming, leaking into the drum mics. Awesome.

  • Arrrrgghhhh!!

  • @StretchPhotography @nofxrulez1 @rudeboyz222 This is the album version drums along with the Kids Are All Right footage. Two different versions. Preview the album version on iTunes and play this video. It's the same audio. The two will start phasing against each other. That is scientific proof that it's the same audio. There is no argument here. Different audio would not have that comb-filtering sound to it.

  • Best Of Drums

  • Is it possible to give a million stars to this video?

  • how did oyu msake this/?

  • uhhhhh. . .i don't thin k so

  • One of a kind

  • is that a china at 0:35 ? (the crashing sound)

  • @jazziestge0ff Yep.

  • @jazziestge0ff yush

  • @jazziestge0ff Yes it is.

  • @jazziestge0ff

yes it is he had a china at this point in time

  • Comment removed

  • he was great. loved his drumming the best in quadrophenia. those rolling toms

    were awesome.

  • Keith was a lead drummer He wasnt just holding down the beat. He dueled with Pete on most songs, he dueled with the whole band for that matter. John was really holding the bottom down in a lot of songs. That what makes Keith one in a million and omg it was like watching Steve Martin comedy wise. Keith was a will remain my favorite all time rock star Keith Moon R.I.P.!!

  • @bonkeydonkable ROFL....thats not moonie on the soundtrack.

  • @bonkeydonkable ???????????????????

  • PunKrupa

  • 0:29. lol Keith looks like Austin Powers :D

  • love how from about 1:10 you can just hear him scream with the drums :')

  • i like how you can hear random talking

  • I saw an interview where Pete said that Keith had an inner metronome. Keith could and would go away in some unknown direction but would always land right back where he needed to be at a precise time.

  • Keith was the master of organized chaos!

  • This isn't the track that's used on the album. It's one from Rock Band if I'm not mistaken. It was recorded by him, but was a poor version and they obviously didn't use it. Some of the fills are alot different if you listen to the two tracks

  • It's all over the place!!! But then so were The Who.

  • ....

  • best drummer of all time

  • @Rockstarsales Keith Moon is the greatest drummer of all time.

  • @ZeppelinFloydRoses Compared to whom? Bonham crushes him, as does Ginger Baker and I can go on but hey it's all opinion anyway. Cheers buddy!

  • @Rockstarsales exactly, so my opinion doesn't matter. either does yours.

  • @ZeppelinFloydRoses well, it does to each of us lol

  • @Rockstarsales i have to agree. i've never understood moon being mentioned as one of the all time greats. bonham, baker, even that guy in the rascals, theyre all over him. this is very very poor.

  • @sparkles67 yeah but keith moon was the definition of rock n roll i mean it had the drummer look! He was crazy and knew how to rock. I mean who else would put TNT in thier drum set on live tv or blow up hotel toilets. He was a basic drummer but still he was known more of his image then his skills.

  • @sparkles67 That's because he was taking legal prescription drugs, which eventually killed him. Had he been taking something perfectly safe, like acid, marijuana or shrooms, he'd still be alive today and would have recorded this a lot better.

  • @BrettDixonMusic thats a completely retarded comment. ask sid barrett if acid is completely safe!!! moony was an average drummer, but plenty of ridiculously good albums were recorded by average drummers. appetite for destruction, back in black, abbey road etc etc.......) saying acid, shrooms and even maryjane is perfectly safe is just stoopid.

  • Well then, Mr. Sparkles67, how come no one has ever died from them? How come all the rockstars we hear about die from either pills or meth or heroine? How come I'M still alive?? I think I've proven my point.

  • @Rockstarsales this pretty close to when he died and he was very very unfit and unhealthy, this is pretty great considering his health, and you obiously havent listened to his live drumming around 68-72ish give live at leeds a listin and youll hear amazeing things! this is nothing especially in amazeing journey or sparks, and look up cant exp`lain shindig - pretty obious he isnt sloppy or shitty timed ;)

  • @drummermoon Good response and thanks for the insight.

  • @Rockstarsales np anytime :D

  • @Rockstarsales

you know nothing about drumming. piss off you ignorant troll. go listen to some shit like charlie watts.

  • @GrungeMetalRocker First of all, Charlie Watts (in my opinion) is even worse than Keith Moon, secondly, I'm a drummer for over 20 years, been on tour, TV and radio and lastly, the way you speak it seems clear that you're the ignorant one.

  • If you wanted a technically skilled jazz/rock drummer from the 60's for a serious music session, then i suppose Ginger Baker. If you wanted a drummer to lose your mind with on a 4 day bender, then Keith Moon FTW

  • @cranie4 They had to remove the ride and crash cymbals from his kit to force him to use the hi-hat, which he never normally used, at least not on stage.

  • Superb drumming but this was recorded during a period in Moon's life when he was really in bad way from the booze. They had to remove certain cymbals from his kit because despite repeatedly telling him not to use them, he would forget every time.

The screaming is probably something he did all the time, but Moon never practiced the drums. He didn't even have a kit in his house. He is producing this wonderful drum track but it would have been a real effort for him by this stage. RIP Moony

  • I just love it when you can hear him screaming while playing (listen carefully)

  • He was an excellent rock n roll drummer. But not the best of all time.Think about all the great drummers in the past and now. They have different styles. Some have better skills. Some have more distinctive styles. It's a matter of preference and/or opinion.

  • Sounds terrible!!

  • this is sooperdooper more please

  • i jammed with this video. Very fun. I play bass

  • hero rip keith.x

  • To the guy who says Keith is 'overrated', may I suggest paying a visit, on youtube, to Keith playing isolated drums to the last two minutes of "Behind Blue Eyes." Then go to Wolfgang's Vault, and watch The Who live, Tanglewood 1970, esp. "Sparks." Keith has a smallish kit (only three mounted toms) but has his usual two bass drums, and the drumming is absolutely astonishing. Nothing like it anywhere, and never will be again.

  • I listen to a lot of Neil Peart and see a bunch of comments comparing him to Keith. Now I admit I'm not a drummer and I'm not saying this is a bad performance, but compared to Neil...I just can't see the argument. Help please???

  • @nevinkel Neil said many times that Keith Moon was his all time favorite drummer and also called him the “best drummer of all time”. Part of what makes Keith Moon so great is that he was the first of his kind, nobody had played Rock & Roll (or the drums in general) like Keith had. just compare someone who came before Keith like Ringo Starr to someone who came after and was inspired by Keith like John Bonham or Neil Pert. Plus I think Keith was every bit as skilled as Neil Pert if not more so.

  • Annnnimmalll!!!!

  • I think he is over rated

  • @garyc2

fuck you troll he died becouse jesus wanted drum lessons

  • @xXCDSOUNDXx I think if he wanted drum lesson he would go for someone like buddy rich or louie bellson

  • @garyc2 . i think you just want attention

  • @RisingSon011

    Na!

jus think he's ok, but over rated.

  • Yes, i do believe when they make Rock Band they re record the instruments. So that's why this is on time and so much easier then Keith's real version

  • this is fake, for sure. Moonie is never in time, that what made him so great, for sure..

  • @fricky101 No, they cleaned up the timing in ProTools if they did at all. Listen to the mixed version and this, they aren't very different, if at all. Plus, you can hear Keith screaming during the take...

  • @fricky101 Your confusing.

  • Are you sure this is Moonie? I know the video and the audio aren't synched, but is there any chance this is a modern fake?

  • @StretchPhotography this video was made for The Kids Are Alright (though I think it was first shown on Top of the Pops!), where the band play live in the studio, so it's different to the LP version, which I think the drum track is from. This video clip is also supposedly the last time Moon played with the Who (August 1978)...

  • I have always thought this was the most unKeithlike drum part to the point I even thought it might be Pete. It's obviously Keith based on his grunts and screams in this track but he never used to stick to the hihat or the same beat for more than 1 or 2 bars. He struggled in this clip to play well..sad. I guess it was a sign of things to come :(

  • "I'm STILL the best fucking Keith Moon type drummer in the WORLD!"

  • Please listen to

  • Moon was a maniac of brilliance. A non-human gift.

  • Can we please stop arguing about whether or not this is the drum take from Who Are You? Most of the videos on YouTube are the Kids Are Alright version, not the album version. Preview the song on iTunes and play this video (start about a minute in). If you get it right, you will hear that it is PRECISELY the same audio. The two are played at slightly differing tape speeds, so the faster one will catch up and you will hear the two phasing with each other! That only happens with the same audio.

  • Everybody quit arguing and just start listening. It's the sound of an iconic drummer..who cares if it's in or out of time....all great rock speeds up and slows down. It's ok as long as the rest of the band does it at the same time.

  • it could have been any one drumming...until about 1:43 where you hear him start screaming...classic keith moon....he always screamed while he played....listen to becks bolero

  • I saw keith moon with the who in memphis ... years ago.

    amazing.

  • no chance!!!!!!!!

  • Keith Moon's the MAN !!!

  • That's a lot to remember. Good thing he always improvised.

  • If you isolate any instrument track from most rock bands' recordings it will often sound sloppy. But when you put it with the rest of the band it sounds good, because it's the overall song energy and textures what is really important. Moon made mistakes so did Hendrix for example, but take any of them off their band's recordings and it won't never sound as good again. It eventually happened. There was no replacement for them, that's the mark of a special musician. Rock music is about chemistry.

  • Its about time a video like this was put onto youtube because all of those people who say that Keith couldn't drum will finally be able to see that he was absolutley fantastic and that he didn't just hit any random drum and hope for the best!

  • @marcusdolby re click tracks.....biggest misconception ever. Its like saying you can't play consistant time and have good feel...Great drummers can play around the click...the click is just a refference point John Bonham plays ahead of the beat when called for...and behind the beat when called for...he doesn't speed up and slow down..BIG difference...many drummers just think they have to bury the click when playing along to one...THATS what kills the feel

  • @oz1747 well said

  • @oz1747 Just found your response now, dont know why I didnt get it last month. I agree with you about the ebb and flow thing. Bonham said as long as you keep the beat, everything you put in between will sound great. But if you listen to some of the great tracks in rock and roll, they start at 120 bpm and finish at 126 bpm. You cant do that with a click. Stairway to Heaven is case and point. That song speeds WAY UP !! And if it didnt it wouldnt have all that excitment and explosion at the end.

  • It may be listed in the comments already, didn't read them all, but where did you get the isolated drum track? On the Special Edition of "The Kids Are Alright," there are two of John Entwistle's isolated bass tracks, but where did this come from?

  • I know it's just for keeping the headphones on while drumming, but I just have to laugh at that duct-tape head brace on him! :)

  • The noises he makes during his fills are the BEST part of Keith Moon!

  • Are his headphones duct taped to his head? It sure looks like duct tape!

but... with Moon, I could see the need.

  • It's Moon, get the fuck over yourselves you mental midgets. The track has been time adjusted to fit into the Rock Band engine, but in every other way it's identical to the original.

PS. It's not a Moog synth. It's Pete playing a guitar into the input of an ARP2600. You can do this with the software version and it's great fun.

  • This tune was done with a click track that played the synthesizer part in his headphones. it couldnt have been done any other way, as Pete Townshend wrote the parts originally on his memory moog synched to a modular sequencer, which keith then played the drums to.

  • @terryd1 I hat to inform you but your wrong. Next time you listen to who are you, try telling me it starts out and ends on the same BPM.

  • The Loon would be clawing his way back up from the pits in hell if he could hear this imposter taking the piss out of the master...Shame on you for posting this

  • Keith did not play the drums; he was the drums.

  • This is not Keith Moon this is too sloppy.

  • john bonham is the best drummer in rock history, and you do not believe so you can suck my balls

  • it just standard druming

  • okay hes not the best DRUMMER but he is like the coolest and best showman ever...along right with tre cool

  • @trecoolmania

Do not EVER compare keith moon and tre cool in my presence again. Keith was and still is a LEGEND. Tre Cool isn't even half good.

  • @TopTenCrew i knew some smart ass would say that...buddy you just dont get him.compared tre is actually a more solid drummer when u listen and studie there sound.no matter wat ur no gona agree coz uve got one opinion and thats it.but im telling from an equal side of view with no favouriting they both are very good drummers and showmans.

  • @TopTenCrew

I was going to take you seriously until you misspelled "study."

  • he is my absolute favorite drummer ever. I'm a huge Who fan and I'm almost 16..no one can ever compare to Moon the Loon.

  • On the debate about who's the greatest rock drummer of all time etc.Moonie is my favorite but I don't think he was the best of all time.To me its John Henry Bonham and Keith Moon was his idol as a young drummer. Moonie had flair, and a style that was unique and original as well as perfect for The Who. He was however limited to some degree in what he could perform in terms of styles of music. But for The Orrible Ooooo he was simply the perfect fit. He was a true one and only not to be taken away.

  • If you need to continue the conversation I'll be happy to do it privately, but the endgame is going to be the same regardless. This is Moon playing. As someone who can quote you chapter and verse on his audible shouts and mistakes on Quadrophenia, you're talking to a fellow Who fan here. It's Moon.

  • There's so many YouTube posters that have so much to say when they're safe behind their keyboards - Most of these types wouldn't say half this shit if they were face to face. Bunch of immature assholes!

  • great drummer for his time, but just like how in sports or cars or even people, drummers just keep getting better and faster. I love kieth for who and what he was. RIP Kieth

  • Look, this is Moon at the end of his life. Compare with earlier stuff, like the songs on Who's Next. That's where you see the fire.

  • @RandallPMcMurphy, how about Terry Bozio, or Bill Bruford?

Actually I'm not that impressed with this track. There's no fire. Sounds like a karaoke version. Look at how hard he's wailing on those drums! Where's the rock?!?

  • @michaelmuller actually it's not that special, it barely works. people think it's great just because they know is moon.

  • I love Keith Moon, but this sounds faster than it looks. :/
