I'm a little sad that the British Mark 1 or Mark 4 tank did not make this list. They were so successful that everyone else had to get them too. I'm not sure that the number one spot should be awarded to a tank with only a limited combat experience. It has never met another tank on the field of battle, so how we say that it is the greatest ever?
What's the point of all this though? Conventional war has all but died since Vietnam. Almost all the threats facing large conventional Western armies will not come towards them to be gunned down by advanced machines like this. China, for example, doesn't need to lift a single military finger. They already own the vast majority of US debt. Jihadists and insurgents fight from the shadows. If every single Leopard or US Abrams disappeared tomorrow, it wouldn't made much of a difference.

Further, the Saudis are much more interested in protecting themselves from an Iranian threat. They may not like the Jewish state, but a bunch of tanks aren't going to stop Israel from existing. No matter how bad you want it.

The M1 Abrams and Leopard II are both modern similar tanks.
The Fokker is a WW 1 plane. The Gripen is a modern, top of the line jet fighter.
The correlation arguement you attempt is severely flawed.
There is nothing wrong in what I say, because the Abrams and T-72 have proven themselves WHEN IT COUNTS. Leopard II? Not yet. It may beat them, but we have way of knowing.

If one weapon made from the same generation is tested against another weapon from the same generation that has killed people in combat and the non combat tested weapon constantly beats the tested weapon in all kinds of trials and tests it's safe to assume that the non combat tested weapon is better.

It's irrelevant when comparing tanks if one has preformed and the other has not.
They are both amazing tanks in the end, One has been used in combat and crushed any opposition it has come up against, The other out preforms in tests, War exercises and has a major advantage due to a much smaller IR figure.

@cuttock rofl i dont even know where to begin... the only time the m1 has faced anything that might resemble a worthy enemy was the first war in iraq. vs turkish produced russian t-72, which even back then was outdated. they didnt have thermal vision, so the m1's were able to pick them off at 3km away, wheres the t-72 had could only see about 1km. the m1 uses a gasturbine engine , what more do i need to say. the thermal footprint is insane and not to mention the fuel effiency.
@cuttock i might be mistaken about them beeing turkish produced. my initial point was that the t-72's they sold to iraq had low-quality electronics beacuse the russians didnt want to sell them their best.
As far as this tank goes though? This is a typical example of what happens when you let Germans play with tanks. They go and try and outdo EVERYONE. Fortunately, they learned their lesson in WW2 about over-engineering... As great as the Tigers and Panzerkampfwagens were, they could have been just as good, if not far better, had they not tried to make them perfect.
Fortunately for the rest of the world, they didn't figure that out until it was too late. Or we'd have had a bit of a problem.
@xCh34pShOtx Abrams is a great tank, easily deserving a spot in the top 3, but I wouldn't say its better. The British Challenger II is a better tank than the Abrams, I'm not sure if the Leopard II is better than that though. Challenger II is no less advanced than Abrams, and is borderline invincible. But then again, can't really base it off combat losses, as the Abrams tend to see a lot more action than either. This one belongs in the top 3 though at minimum.
@xCh34pShOtx what makes you think its better? lets compare... m1 has a gas turbine engine. better acceleration, shitty milage and ALOT more heat generation.( lights up the thermal imaging like a fireball) m1 uses a american produced version of the german Rheinmetall L44. new Leo2A6 uses a newer L/55 cannon. allthough same caliber. the leopard2 is lighter and completely modular. i would say the leo is MUCH better, unless ur having a dragrace...

The frontal armor of the A5 and A6 is rated highest currently of all top tanks in service...in sweden the Leo2 knocked the CH2 out of the competition with easy the Leo2 did the same in Greece..the 120mmL55 is second to none no silly 2pice slow loading pice of junk ammo that should be replaced even in the UK by the Leo2 gun but lack of money forec the brits to continue the riffeld gun madness. It has the same amount of firepower as most NATO tanks, it is a bit quicker but it's armour protection like the M1, lags far behind the Challenger 2. I must say I'm surprised it doesn't even feature in this programme at all, as it has a very successful career so far with the least losses of any tank in the world that has been fielded and it's predecessor, which is much inferior to CR2 still holds the longest tank kill. Why is the Sherman in this programme? It was shit then and is still shit now
As far as I remember, it`s been fielded by germany in their KFOR mission. Denmark and canada are using it in Afghanistan too. Don`t really know 'bout any tank to tank engagements, if this is your point.

Great gun. weak armor even on the 2a7 the ch2 has better armor so does the m1a2sep. current best tank and u.n. friend is the merkiva 4/5. her gun is good has best range with the lanhat and heavy frontal armored due too front engine added too it. makes the it heaviest then shots down almost everything.Though not done yet after all that that right the merk4 is a IFV to. she carry's troops after all that. the leo2a7 wouldn't stand a chance currently. Future tank face off is the armada vs the m1a3.

The Germans suffered 3 casualties in Afghan when their Leopard 2 A6 (with their highest armour package) drove over an IED, The leopard 2 has far inferior armour protection to Challenger 2, any one will tell you that; the Americans, the Germans, French, British and so on. Any specialist will admit that CR2 has the best armour

Leopard 2 on the other hand has had 1 crew killed in IED attakcs in Afghan with the other 3 suffering severe wounds. That's more than Challenger

A Challenger 2 with ERA was penetrated by a RPG29 wounding the driver. A M1 Abrams was damaged by a RPG wounding a crew member.

Germans learned their lessons from WW2 the hard way - size (ie: tiger or panther) isnt everything. A strong combination of Speed, Agility, Gun size, Simplicity of manufacture and ease of maintenance (ie: t34) is the way to go.......thus appears the Leopard. Its a 1970s T34, german style.

@npadul30 that's not an mg42 on top, it's an mg3. but both guns are very similar. the difference (as far as i know) is just a heavier bolt (reduces the fireing speed to 1200 rpm) and the 7.62 nato calibre instead of the 7.92 mm calibre. i shot it when i was in the army, it's an absolutely great machine gun... if you're able to handle it well.

Correction,the Leopard 2A6 is better than the M1 Abrams against chemical energy in the glacis and in the turret,while the M1A2 Abrams has better protection against Kinetic energy in the turret and lower hull,the M256 may have a lower velocity against the L/55 however that disadvantage is compensated by the M829A3 DU Penetrator and SEP improvements.

@Skandinavien88 Its obviously not as up to date as the leopard 2 or challenger 2 mainly because it was designed in the late 70's but when you take into the fact we have created a tank that would fairly easily be a match for either European tank, but we have manufactured roughly nine thousand of them, while there are only a few hundred of either European tank that have been produced.. Also the Abrams has actually seen true tank on tank combat in the gulf war of 1990.
@doctim11 It has been in combat. It has seen service in Afghanistan, and it has received much praise for its ability to deal with infantry - unlike the M1 Abrams.
@ColonelAli The difference is that the designers were looking for different things. The Abrams was designed as a dedicated anti-tank weapon. This is because the infantry would be dealt with the U.S. infantry, which they could deploy in a full magnitude above Germany. But I DO agree that the Leopard is the best tank.
@shinratensei4lyfe Which is stupid, I believe. Anti-tank infantry are way numerous than tanks themselves, so being able to fire good ammunition to deal with them rather than trying to plink them with SABOT (I'm joking) is quite imperative for any tank, I believe, at least.

The Fokker is a WW 1 plane. The Gripen is a modern, top of the line jet fighter.
The correlation arguement you attempt is severely flawed.

If one weapon made from the same generation is tested against another weapon from the same generation that has killed people in combat and the non combat tested weapon constantly beats the tested weapon in all kinds of trials and tests it's safe to assume that the non combat tested weapon is better.

They are both amazing tanks in the end, One has been used in combat and crushed any opposition it has come up against, The other out preforms in tests, War exercises and has a major advantage due to a much smaller IR figure.

@cuttock rofl i dont even know where to begin... the only time the m1 has faced anything that might resemble a worthy enemy was the first war in iraq. vs turkish produced russian t-72, which even back then was outdated. they didnt have thermal vision, so the m1's were able to pick them off at 3km away, wheres the t-72 had could only see about 1km. the m1 uses a gasturbine engine , what more do i need to say. the thermal footprint is insane and not to mention the fuel effiency.

As far as this tank goes though? This is a typical example of what happens when you let Germans play with tanks. They go and try and outdo EVERYONE. Fortunately, they learned their lesson in WW2 about over-engineering... As great as the Tigers and Panzerkampfwagens were, they could have been just as good, if not far better, had they not tried to make them perfect.
Fortunately for the rest of the world, they didn't figure that out until it was too late. Or we'd have had a bit of a problem.

The British Challenger II is a better tank than the Abrams, I'm not sure if the Leopard II is better than that though. Challenger II is no less advanced than Abrams, and is borderline invincible. But then again, can't really base it off combat losses, as the Abrams tend to see a lot more action than either. This one belongs in the top 3 though at minimum.

It has the same amount of firepower as most NATO tanks, it is a bit quicker but it's armour protection like the M1, lags far behind the Challenger 2. I must say I'm surprised it doesn't even feature in this programme at all, as it has a very successful career so far with the least losses of any tank in the world that has been fielded and it's predecessor, which is much inferior to CR2 still holds the longest tank kill. Why is the Sherman in this programme? It was shit then and is still shit now

Great gun. weak armor even on the 2a7 the ch2 has better armor so does the m1a2sep. current best tank and u.n. friend is the merkiva 4/5. her gun is good has best range with the lanhat and heavy frontal armored due too front engine added too it. makes the it heaviest then shots down almost everything.Though not done yet after all that that right the merk4 is a IFV to. she carry's troops after all that. the leo2a7 wouldn't stand a chance currently. Future tank face off is the armada vs the m1a3.

@xNexus65x Yes there was a weak point in one of the joins in the armour, it has since had 3 armour upgrades, the driver lost a few toes....big deal, that tank still serves. The Germans suffered 3 casualties in Afghan when their Leopard 2 A6 (with their highest armour package) drove over an IED, The leopard 2 has far inferior armour protection to Challenger 2, any one will tell you that; the Americans, the Germans, French, British and so on. Any specialist will admit that CR2 has the best armour

@xNexus65x You cannot see a picture of the RPG29 attack on google images, you find a pic of 1 destroyed challenger 2 and I can tell you now that that tank belongs to 2RTR and was destroyed by another tank of QRL which put 2 rounds through the hatch. You know absolutely nothing. The Challenger 2 that famously took over 73 hits was 6 armour packages ago. Leopard 2 on the other hand has had 1 crew killed in IED attakcs in Afghan with the other 3 suffering severe wounds. That's more than Challenger

The Americans have lost 48 tanks completely unserviceable and many others have been put out of action for long periods of time to have extensive repairs done. Even TUSK hasn't come close to CR2 TES standard. I suggest you leanr something about tanks before posting comments

Germans learned their lessons from WW2 the hard way - size (ie: tiger or panther) isnt everything. A strong combination of Speed, Agility, Gun size, Simplicity of manufacture and ease of maintenance (ie: t34) is the way to go.......thus appears the Leopard. Its a 1970s T34, german style.

@npadul30 that's not an mg42 on top, it's an mg3. but both guns are very similar. the difference (as far as i know) is just a heavier bolt (reduces the fireing speed to 1200 rpm) and the 7.62 nato calibre instead of the 7.92 mm calibre. i shot it when i was in the army, it's an absolutely great machine gun... if you're able to handle it well.

Correction,the Leopard 2A6 is better than the M1 Abrams against chemical energy in the glacis and in the turret,while the M1A2 Abrams has better protection against Kinetic energy in the turret and lower hull,the M256 may have a lower velocity against the L/55 however that disadvantage is compensated by the M829A3 DU Penetrator and SEP improvements.

@Skandinavien88 Its obviously not as up to date as the leopard 2 or challenger 2 mainly because it was designed in the late 70's but when you take into the fact we have created a tank that would fairly easily be a match for either European tank, but we have manufactured roughly nine thousand of them, while there are only a few hundred of either European tank that have been produced.. Also the Abrams has actually seen true tank on tank combat in the gulf war of 1990.

@doctim11 It has been in combat. It has seen service in Afghanistan, and it has received much praise for its ability to deal with infantry - unlike the M1 Abrams.

@ColonelAli The difference is that the designers were looking for different things. The Abrams was designed as a dedicated anti-tank weapon. This is because the infantry would be dealt with the U.S. infantry, which they could deploy in a full magnitude above Germany. But I DO agree that the Leopard is the best tank.

@shinratensei4lyfe Which is stupid, I believe. Anti-tank infantry are way numerous than tanks themselves, so being able to fire good ammunition to deal with them rather than trying to plink them with SABOT (I'm joking) is quite imperative for any tank, I believe, at least.

@ColonelAli I agree with you that tanks SHOULD carry as many machineguns as necessary to make it more efficient. Pay about $5000 for a gun than $100,000 on a squad of infantry.

@shinratensei4lyfe The worst damn example on how they did not take the anti-personnel role on the M1 serious is that they put a .50 machine gun OUTSIDE ON ITS ROOF, and an M240, 7.62x51 NATO, inside the tank as coaxial machine gun. Why? Wouldn't just 2 .50 calibre machine guns be way better? It's a tank, Jesus Christ! It's not as if fuel economy mattered for the M1, it is a gas guzzler anyway (comparison with any other tank, of course. you cannot compare tank vs toyota prius ;))

@ColonelAli You CAN compare if the tank eats up 10 gallons upon ignition. It's like comparing a monster truck to a hybrid the way the M1 takes JET FUCKING FUEL compared to DIESEL engine tanks. I mean why try to fix something that ain't broke. And after Sadam motherfucking HUSSEIN burned 1/5 of the world's gasoline supply in '91, you would think that the U.S. would try to find a more efficient engine than a PLANE TURBINE.
