  • Words that begin with H that are preceded with "an" are done so because the H is silent. This is especially prominent in Spanish, where the letter H is always silent.

COMMON SILENT H WORDS IN ENGLISH

    Honor

    Herb (except in Britain)

"History" is debatable. I'd have to say that 90% of Americans say "a historical document" rather than "an historical document".

  • @WorldChallenge

You say 'erbs', and we say 'herbs', because there's a f---ing H in it.

    -Eddie Izzard

    lmao

  • @Bobzeaux Except the "H" is silent. :D

  • I Can't Believe It's Not AVGN!

  • "Because poor nudeity is cool"

  • @Dim4323 "Nudity"

    Because poor literacy is k E w L?

  • In the United States, we only use an before vowel sounds.

  • Big Brain:The Big Brain am Winning again. I am the Greetest. Now I am leaving earth for no good raison.

    Linkara:Poor Literacy is Kewl.

  • I thought of that line in part four of Suburban Knights & if you know when & where it goes. good for you!

  • While I was playing Gauntlet: Dark Legacy for the PS2.

Sumner: That was AN HEROIC effort!

Linkara: Because Poor Literacy is Kewl.

  • @nintendoboy17 You do realize that it's grammatically correct for words that begin with H + a vowel to be preceded by "an", right?

  • @TenPoundHammer H is not a vowel. The vowels are A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y. Also, I played the original arcade Gauntlet on PS2 (Midway Arcade Treasures), the announcer in that game says "That was A HEROIC effort." That proves it was read wrong.

  • @nintendoboy17 He was referring to words that begin with a silent consonant, in which case "an" would be appropriate since it's about the pronunciation, not the actual spelling of a word.

I don't know why he decided to point that out, though, since the instance you referred to didn't have the word succeeding "an" begin with a consonant sound.
