  • Hey bro , hope your doing good... i wanted to ask u after i took the crank off can i take the arm off the gears or is it all welded together??

  • I'm new to biking; one of my pedals of my fixed-gear bike stripped the threading off the crank arm and fell off.

Is there a name for the other crank arm (the non-drive one without the spider)? I'm trying to find the manufacturer but I don't know what to call that item (crank arms and crank sets all show the ones that hold the chain)

  • Thanks for the advice i just dont like how i have to buy all the tools to do this job when maybe i will only do it once or twice. There must be a way to do this stuff without paying for special tools.

  • This is what I needed to know. I've got to get that crank extractor, first I thought that was someone's nose...

  • Strange comments with this video again.

  • What's the website where you bought that tools? Thanks.

  • really all u need is a wrachet and a cresnt wrench a few alan wrenchs if u have them laying around the shop now on old school cranks u need a cresent wrench and a wrench

  • Good video. Thanks.

  • I am "Cranking" it to this.

  • Very helpful, thanx for posting this!

  • Thanks for the video.

  • Just found a toolkit on Amazon for a bit less than that, but shipping on an 8 pound toolkit might push it well over $50, going to have to look locally. Thanks again for the upload!

  • I have a Specialized RockHopper 2010 thats almost a year old now. I'm a heavy rider(as my username implies) and I've started getting strange sounds from the right crank(?)/pedal. It's like a dull thudding/clicking sound that I can feel through the pedal when I apply power at a certain point in the rotation of the pedals/crank.

Can anyone tell me if it simply needs tightening or should I take it to my LBS for repairs?

  • Fixed the non-play issue, Thanks for the upload man! Definitely appreciate it!

  • i have a truvativ stylo 3 triple ring setup. can i convert this to a single chain ring? On my current setup the largest chain ring does not look light it will seat correctly on the middle crank bolt position. Will i need a middle chain ring? A

Are the downhill chain rings for single speed designed to seat correctly in the middle position on triple cranks?

  • OHHHHHHHHHHHH A Crank extractor. Damn this toolkit should have come with instructions.

  • Thanks! It is good to hear from some one who gets it! I will talk to my set crew and try to work on my hand placement and basement lighting, maybe practice before hand in my spare time!!! Ha.Ha. {Seriously} Thanks!

  • @mntbiker036 Wear long pants next time.

  • Thank you brother, that told me just what I needed to know. I know I need to buy a toolkit. I didn't mind ya being quiet, my mornings are the time I get to myself, and when the kids get up, then its noisy enough. If you do something like this again- it was hard to see the shape of the crank axel reciver in the sprocket, because your hand behind it killed the light. But that's not anything that should get it the way of what you taught us.

  • o you need a crank extractor

  • are those tools made in china? I don't buy shit from china

  • Yeah I think I need to do something like this with my bike because it's making a clicking sound once a rotation when I pedal. And I can't do this without that tool apparently, and I wanna learn to do this stuff myself

  • @joeyc5446 Is that a multi-gear or single speed?

  • @ilovebitchcakes Multi-gear. It also stopped, I don't know why, but its in the shop and the gears are really off so that might have been the problem

  • you know this guy is serious with a Diamondback, only Huffy is better for mtb.

  • i had to replace the pedal on my bike and did not have a thin wrench, it was a bitch to get off. learn from me any one without tools, get them

  • is there nbdy that knows how to take these FUCKN PEICES OF SHIT off without a crank puller?

  • @milldabeast519 16 lb sledge

  • @sirnicholson ill wap that shit off with a14 oz fuckn wrench in a minute@!

  • great video, thanks

  • and oh yeah am very very glad that you are not from EXPERT VILLAGE... pls stay away from em ;)

  • u've got some real good tools there :) thanks for sharing..

  • i just tap it off the crank

  • Hello, i just started maintening my own bike (a freeride Norco Sasquatch 2008 ), i had to change my Sprockets (front ones) and when i used my Crank Puller (PARK TOOL brand) the ''tip'' as they call it got stucked completely in, of course i can detach my crankset and reattach, but cannot put the tightening Bolt in, and i don't know how to get it off, i feel stupid, but ohh well, i'll learn. Anyways, anyone could help me!? Thanks in advance

  • This guy sounds like he hates doing this video and hates life. Or he's sounding really quiet and depressed because his wife doesn't like him toying too much around with his bike....... my girlfriend get quite mad at me because she feels like i'm giving more attention to the bike than her. If I had to choose between my Cervelo t1 with dual HED-3's and another dual of Jet 90's with Shimano FC-7950 Dura Ace Crankset, I would choose my bike :), goodbyye hooeee

  • @RockyShitNigga Yah I was doing it early in the morning so was trying to keep it down because no one else really shares my early rise habits. And my wife my might have a tad bit of jealousy toward my bikes!

  • thats right home boy i feel for what u saying.. who give a fuckkk about Dum Hoooees.. theres more to life

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • @MsMarleysDaddy Yep! Thank you!

  • Instructive clip but BEWARE!!

When he says it might feel like your going to take off the thread, DON'T THINK YOU WON'T. I just pulled the thread off my main crank and now how am i going to get it off?

  • do i need a crank extractor tool if i have self extracting bolts ? any ideas how they r used wud b very much appreciated thanks..crankarms am sfter gettin off ,

  • Extractors are usually necessary for square taper, (cr)ISIS, octalink and most other conventional three piece designs.

Newer external bottom brackets tend to have a two piece crank/crank+axle layout with at least self-extracting capability, such as Race Face's X-Type and FSA's MegaExo. With Shimano's Hollowtech II however, as soon as the bolts and the safety catch are undone, it all pretty much falls apart.

Truvativ GXP simply won't stay tight, it'll just disassemble itself whenever it wants to.

  • Did you loosen the crank before shooting this vid. I've been trying to remove my crank with Park crank extractor all day and it just won't turn by hand. Now hitting it round with a rubber mallet but it's slow going. I have checked there is no washer in there too.

  • mine just has a bolt keeps coming off what should i do?

  • Thanks a lot! Very useful!

  • my bike has crank arms set too but i dont know where to find a black aluminun set. a good online store store pls?

  • Is a Crank extractor neccesary?

  • @raukt Yes. You can buy them on line just make sure you get the one that fits your style crank. Spending the money on a tool kit is the way to go because you get tools to do most every job on older and newer bikes. You can buy a good DIY kit for about 50 bucks.

  • @mntbiker036 you can also gently hit the 4 bolts with a hamer and something soft between it. hit 1 bolt, turn to the next one. GENTLY, not like a maniac :) always did it this way :)

  • hi i just watched you video wicked cheers i gonna have to upgrade my tool kit been up all night working on a bike i found. i have realized i need loads more tools :) will keep you informed on how i get on :) cheers liz :) x

  • @liz1mac Thanks! Everyone needs more tools! Enjoy the ride!!!

  • @liz1mac online is one word

  • Please watch:

THE WORLD'S SIMPLEST TRANSMISSION for BICYCLE

  • is there any way to take one off with just standard tools found in a normal tool box?

  • @JueputaGuebon Sorry but I don't know of any!

  • @JueputaGuebon No, using anything that is not bike-specific or "jimmy-rigged" is almost sure to damage the bike. If you plan on riding for a long time, the investment is more than worth it since bike shops can get rather pricey (standard rate for a "Basic Tune" runs about $35 while a home mechanic kit runs $50-100. Use it 2-3 times and its paid for).

  • @MrDrProfessorBolton

aye aye to that!! I swear it seems like bike culture is very expensive and might i say ----slightly elitist. I love riding my bike (i ride 30 miles a day to work and back) but I just hate having to spend money every time I need a little "tweek" to sharpen my ride. Ill take your advice and buy a whole tool set.

    peace

  • @JueputaGuebon Well, think about it this way: if your car tire goes flat, a brand new tire can run $80-150, but that is not even balanced or installed; engine parts can run EXTREMELY expensive as well. But that isn't even factoring in labor, OR tools to do it yourself. A good torque wrench can be $110-200 just to tighten your lug nuts properly. Is a bike really so expensive if you never have to put fuel in it and a tube and tire together cost about $30?

  • @MrDrProfessorBolton what type of tyres do u buy for 30 with a tube.. i wish it was that cheap... but yeah u are right it much cheaper then a car... also much more rewarding..

  • @SuicidalSies I meant 1 tire and 1 tube, just a basic 700x18 Vittoria Zaffiro Pro runs about $20-26 depending on the shop and tubes are $5.99, in my area anyway.

  • I got a haro f1 and one of my cranks cracked,

any advice on how to take out the spindle?

    PLEASE HELP!!

  • you gotta pound that bitch out with a hammer. take both cranks off, put a peice of wood between the spindle and the hammer, and pound

  • @lakaisk8r37 Did it work for you doing it like that? I just hate buying tools when you can do it the hard way XD.

  • what were you about to say right when the video ended?

    "and you need to know...."

  • I think it was that you need to know the width of your bottom bracket, since the old (tapered, octalink) bb's came in different widths for different frames. The new hollotech ones come with spacers, and so can fit many frames.

  • what is the name of tool to remove the chain set?

    my sound isnt working

  • @theprisoner9 fat men do

  • Real men know when to shut up.

  • i got a viking dd24 targa with a broken crank for free, and this video has shown me how to replace it myself so saving me money, cheers man.. :D

  • not crank, bottom bracket.. doh

  • Glad it helped ya!

  • Thankyou for a very imformative video now i can do mine.

  • Yep! Happy trails!

  • i dont have a crank puller what els can i do

  • You've got to puchase one or take your bike to a shop. They are very cheap on line, but if you can speak with an online tech then you can be sure to get the right one for your aplication.

  • i have bought a new crank puller and it fits in but when i spin it around to take the crank arm off it spins and does nothing, can anyone help me please?

  • how could i remove crank without crank remover? Is it even possible?

  • not that I'm aware of, check with a shop.

  • i tried to remove my fuji crank arm but its a square style and the crank puller is too big. what do I do?

  • You can figure out what size it is and get the correct puller or just take it to a shop and have it removed .Then you could ask them what size puller they used for your own reference in case you decide to get one.

  • 1:34 - 1:57 You're killing me! Once you crack the seal, just flip it around to the other side of wrench and whip that bolt off without struggling so much. Thank you.

  • my crank makes a grinding noise evry time i pedal. that means i heave to clean nd lube the bearings right?

  • They may need to be replaced either way it's gotta be taken apart, have a bike mechanic look @ it if you can!

  • is there a way to take off the crank arm without a crank puller?

  • none that I am aware of

  • Thanks for the video it was really helpful. Had my bike fixed in no time :)

  • same toolkit as me..:XD

  • I am building up my brother's bike and its a Raleigh. Do i need a crank puller for this?..

  • i got a huffy a long time ago and the crank is really wierd on it, it looks like it is all one bar, like a bent bar

  • Thats called a 1 peice crank. His bike has 3 peice cranks which are very different than 1 peice cranks. I would reccomend googling the difference if you want the full lowdown.

  • is there anyway of doing this without the little thing that goes inside the bracket ?

  • Unfortunatly no. There is not

  • I have a question. Someone gave me a Diamondback Wildwood. The crank arms and crank set wiggle inside the frame. What is causing this? And how can I fix it? Do I need a new crank set?

  • I would say your bearings are bad or the bottom brackets loose either way you'll need a wrench. Take it to a shop and ask them to look @ it and see what they say.

  • i have the same problem

  • thanks this helped me alot

    5/5

  • About stripped cranks: If the crank is wrecked anyway, you may be able to get it off with CAREFUL use of a hammer, or you could saw through the crank axle in order to get access to the bottom bracket to replace the whole thing. It's important to notice that the bottom bracket is in the frame of the bicycle, so causing the bottom bracket cups to be permanently stuck means a new bike for you.

If you've got an expensive frame and a tricky problem, hire someone with experience AND insurance.

  • Great tutorial, I appreciate the extra info for context! Nice work :)

  • CAN U HELP MEEEE!!!!!!!........i jumped a set of stairs and when i landed my crank on both sides bent..... -.- and i dont know how to change PLZ HELP!

  • Spend the 50 bucks on a tool kit and pick up a bike repair book, or make friends with someone who has some mechanical ability and just do it. Other wise go to the shop and let some one else do it and make money.

  • mountain bike cranks are nasty to remove bmx cranks are easier

  • thanks,

i plan on upgrading my bike this spring.

  • i plan to do that , and change the cassete but i dont have tools.

I am afraid to buy wrong tools, how many types of brackets are i woud be very grateful if you could tell me which tools to buy, i have trek 4200, three years old all shimano deore parts

  • good video..well done..i got my crank off with out that extractor tool..do you need that extractor tool to replace the crank or another tool because i refitted my crank but

although it works it weaves slightly side to side thanks

  • what if the threds are striped on the crank can i just cut it of

  • Your pretty much screwed....

  • can u use anything else apart from the extractor ?

  • Not that I am aware of. Sorry!

  • thanks im doing it saturday, do i NEED to use tha extractor thing or can i use summat else

  • hi, im doing this on saturday, do i NEED to use that extractor

  • will this work 4 a bmx??

  • It depends! A lot of BMX bikes have a solid crank that has 2 larger nuts on the left side that you take off, they are threaded on the crank arm or pedal base. I just did one that was left handed thread so watch it when you try to loosen it. Then you'll find that there is a bearing catridge on both sides.Take off the bearing on the left side and the crank assembly or pedals will come out "but" you have to angle it and the bearing has to be out first or it won't come out.Try it and let me know ok!

  • i bought a new left crank arm and when i put the arm where it belongs the arms dont align properly... ? i really dont know what to do

  • You should check to make sure they are the same style and should be the same company. Like shimano makes FC series is one of there lower end models. The best thing you can do is get a hold of the company were your bought it and ask them if they can tell you if yours is the same style. The problem with buying one arm is it's most likely a left over that the company could not get rid of for some reason like it does not match most others, or it's from an odd ball crank set.

  • very helpful video , thanks

  • Sure thing, glad I could help ya!

  • thanks for this. i couldn´t figure out how the crank arm was attached until i watched your video. now i got to get a hold of one of those extractor tools.

  • Glad it help ya! You can get the extractor tool from any on line bike parts company. Or buy the tool kit and you'll have most any tool you need for DIY work on your bikes.
