I can't help but think about my poor mother and all those other college grads who struggled even after graduation. She had a BS degree in accounting. She only got one job in her field and was fired in 2006 and couldn't find another job like the one she had since. This was even before the economy went bad. Now, she's lost her mind. She was better off working at McDonald's.
I am cash flowing college. Saying the million dollar lie is one thing, no social worker is going to make an extra million dollars. I do believe some fields need degrees, and some degrees offered are pointless...
My theory about why college is not all it's cracked up to be revolves around the idea that in the information age, many fields require constant on the job learning. A classroom setting where they cram as much information into the heads of young people as they possibly can, is not a replacement for this continuous on the job experience. The pressure they put on kids is nuts. The cost is nuts. Wikipedia is all but banned in schools because things like it will eventually replace college.
Come on man, it's not that bad going to college, especially if you live in a more socialist country where the govt. pays your tuition fees and you pay them back through tax once you are earning over a certain amount. A degree is only what you make of it. It's not a ticket to a workplace by any means, but is evidence that you can complete what you started. Crap they teach you is mostly useless, not completely but mostly yeah.
First one made me smile. A friend of mine just graduated and is now working at his old job at McD's. According to him though, the degree will get you up the rankings faster than if he didn't have it. Though, shift manager is better than I got working a few years.
You have to SELL YOUSELF, like a product to a potential employer... if you are college bound, get a product/degree WITH REAL WORLD VALUE.... these dats 70% of the majors are total shit, not worth a damn... better off with a trade like auto mechanic etc.
@goodgbye i'm not surprised. These people at the Macaroni Grill thought they were doing themselves a favor by going to college so they can get a good job but in reality it's a dissatisfaction to themselves because they own thousands of dollars in student loans to these greedy loan shark companies like Sallie Mae or Wells Fargo.
college helped me get a job with one of the biggest companies in the world. however, i have found that the rotten liberal brainwashers have sent so many students to this company that it was pretty much like staying in college. your bad if you are straight, male, white, christian conservative ect... universities are worthless unless you are studying somthing specific or plan on doing what your told your whole life, they kill creativity, and I still cant spell! UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI GRAD 2007
What does sexual orientation have to do with it? I would see where race may matter, and maybe even gender, and sometimes religion, but colleges don't ask if you're gay or straight.
IN my opinion the best thing to do without a degree is to work at a job and do a part time business. and when your business makes more than your job you can quit if u want and go full time on your business. that is what i did.
I studied philosophy ....... and what they teach you into classes its so odd...... they want the kids to learn how to argue. ....... There was a special philosopher i studied, who said don't go to college, and he attain the world teacher title from united nations.
...And, actually, that "jobs" hurdle actually becomes taller in the first place if you get a college degree in a field in which it's possible to advance without it -- because companies don't want to have to pay you more to start off with, because you have that degree.
I think it is sad that in our society fast food jobs are considered shit jobs and if you work there you are a loser. I think people are really arrogant, like if you aren't wearing a suit and tie and carrying a briefcase to work you are a piece of shit or something.
I agree. It takes a lot of skill to work your way up in a fast food restaurant. You have to develop good people skills, manage a team, put up with customers, etc. You can get a lot more marketable skills in fast food then you can memorizing case studies in an MBA program.
I know a general manager at a privately owned McDonalds that makes 90k a year after bonus. She knows way more about running a business than 90%+ of people I am graduating with!
She has no degree. Just a GED and 35 years of experience! I started working at McDonalds with her when I was 15 and she taught me more than most classes I have taken.
That is why I will get my degree and PLAN how I will start earning back my fee's in Canada. Our fees our half yours

@IncoherentCommenter Are you implying that I "failed out of college"? I was an engineering major and am a member of three academic honor societies.

That hurdle comic is funny, and true. A college education is watered down.

Whatever you do, please don't get into debt for college.
What I like to tell people who tell me that I should go back to college is...
"I will if you pay off my student loans"
Thanks for your comment!
