Very true that the left has had it's intellectual feet to the fire of reality, but the conservative right has been given a free pass. With the Great Recession, it's time to burn some neoclassical feet. Those feet have been stinky for long enough. Naomi Klein hits the economic nail squarely on the head with regard to neoclassical disaster in Chile.
What is the problem with the volume on all her recent (this week) YouTube videos? I can barely tell what she's saying unless I read her lips. Given that these are separate recordings, I am suspicious of the reason behind the lack of volume.
Klein has got to know she's talking nonsense here. The Left reborn?? It's obvious to everyone the left is in tatters, and solely because it won't turn to Marxism. Stalin was certainly terrible, but it was MARXISTS who first stood up against him and suffered the gulags and firing squads, not liberals, not democrats or imperialists. Stalin only turned evil to the west after ww2, before then we was lauded for "restoring order" and ending Bolshevism.
If you want to understand what the Stalinist Thermidor was, and who it was backed by, you have to read Marxists; everybody else opportunistically uses it to attack Lenin and Trotsky or even Marx himself.
Klein wants to take on the ideas of Friedman. Well and good! But if she just sticks to ideas, and not to material reality, she is speaking as a supporter of capitalism, as a reformist and opportunist. What possible alternative she imagines to create UNDER CAPITALISM is just a farce and a lie.
@sweetpotos Many of us feel and have felt that way. I do too, sometimes. The problem is, markets exist. They are a reality in material circumstances where there is scarcity and scarcity is part of the human condition. We, like any other species on earth, grow until there's no more room and as many die as are born. Only then do we stop. As soon as more room is made, we'll fill that up too. The only way around markets (or to truly free markets), is if we learn not to grow. It's sad.
