The prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessing of God be upon him) used to sit in Hira(the cave) contemplating and remembering God. I don't think ANYONE has a disagreement over whether you should do Zikr or not, but the disagreement lies in HOW you should do it. I believe that as long as you are doing it to receive the blessing, mercy, peace, and forgiveness from God then you can even do it dancing if you'd like to. No where in the Quran does it prescribe a certain way to do it because it is optional.

I agree that praying 5 times a day, fasting, paying alms, pilgrimage, reading the Quran, etc. Are all acts of Zikr(Remembering Allah). And in 1932 the Wahhabis founded the state of Saudi Arabia.
In the quran it states ala ina awliyah allah. meaning the walis of Allah. These are the sufis who will prepare you for the life hereafter. everything has a stage. you can't climb a roof without a ladder. same goes with the religion islam you need a sufi to prepare you so you are presentable in front of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the divine Allah (SWT). Zikr is a way to cleanse the heart.
